Summary
Twenty years after the Trifecta lost control of Nikan to Hesperian occupation, the mainland Republic and the independent island kingdom of Speer have an uneasy truce. A young Seer, sent south to settle a years-old blood debt, is delivered to the island by Hesperian captors as a peace offering.
In reality, Chaghan is as much a would-be assassin as he is a captive. The Hesperians’ political machinations mean nothing to him, but with his life – and more importantly, his sister – on the line, he has no choice but to play their game.
Unfortunately, the Speerlies are kinder than he’d expected, despite the Trifecta’s poisonous presence. There’s something about their Prince he can’t help but notice – a haunted look in his eyes that he can’t quite hide, the lingering smell of smoke in his hair.
He just needs Altan to take these damn bracelets off him so he can kill him already.

Rin has been treated as worthless her entire life. For her gender, her skin color, her socioeconomic status. Through sheer will, she gets into Sinegard, where she will be introduced to an unimaginable amount of power that has an equally unimaginable price. But there are other ways of healing, she realizes; there are other ways of fighting for justice and for her people. Still ugly, but perhaps, she may end up with her life and the lives of those she loves intact.
Or: in which Rin bleeds but gets the opportunity to truly get better and move past her ghosts. Or: in which Venka finds a rival, and then someone who truly understands her pain, and then eventually a companion, and then more than a companion in Rin. Or: in which Altan gets people who finally, truly view him as human, and he manages to open his heart a bit more.

She still found herself surviving in the Emergency Department, but a particularly annoying senior, who happens to be her beloved mentor's partner and sadly her head as well, gives her a little pep-talk. Her morning had already consisted of drowning in the lakes of irritation; how would she react if her other not-so-favourite peer, the princeling of the Cardiothoracic Surgery department, ended up as her (unofficial) patient?
