Zoey froze at the soft, teasing order, and Rumi arched an eyebrow.
“W-what?” Zoey breathed. Sweat was beading under her high collar, a delicious and unwanted flush heating her skin. She was burning, why was she so warm?
Rumi took a step closer, and her hips swayed in playful, practiced torment. Fine silks clung to every curve, revealing just enough to keep any romantic enslaved.
“You’re here for love, you claim. Brave girl, to ask for such a thing in this place.” Rumi’s voice was a low, resonant purr. God, how could a voice sound so much like oblivion. “So come on, sweet poet. Sell love, the dream of it, to a courtesan.”
It struck Zoey with pure and total clarity. A lightning strike that only scorched away uncertainties, and the words came to her tongue with the soft inevitability of rain. The taste of them was savoury, melted chocolate, as if sampled from warm skin.
Before Rumi had taken another teasing step, Zoey smiled, and gave her answer.
