Even the most mentally strong of adults wouldn't survive what Varian's been through. What would Varian's mind look like in real life, under these circumstances?
(The original version of TSYHitD has been discontinued. This is the rewrite of it, which is much cleaner and still follows the original story, and even reuses some parts/chapters. Summary
Surviving in the wilderness really isn't all it's cracked up to be.
After being gone for a year, John Dory returns to the Troll Tree to find it completely empty. Save for one troll: His baby brother, Branch. Thinking the trolls and the rest of his family dead, he sets off once again to the Neverglade Trail, this time, with his baby brother in tow. Fueled by fear, guilt, and voices from the past he just can't seem to escape, he wonders if he made the right decision.
But he promised his brother he would never leave him again. So he wouldn't.
Besides, he was never known for his great decisions anyways.
(Based on the song "Great Decisions" by Judah & the Lion)

The desperation that Percy felt earlier turns into stubborn determination. “What can I do to help?”
Or: Thalia’s tree is poisoned and Grover is in danger. When Dionysus refuses to let Percy go on a quest to help save camp and find Grover, Percy turns to Poseidon for help.
