Chapter 2: Wolfsbane

Summary:

Chapter occurs concurrently with the previous one, leading up to Trap's appearance in the previous.

Chapter Text

To say Trap was bored was an understatement.

Sure, not having to kill and get his hands and coat sticky with blood every day was great, but there were only so many things you could do before the endless cycle of being stuck in a place controlled by a currently absent god took its toll.

Much earlier in the day, he had gone out exploring to try to break up the monotony, but not even the discovery he and Azure made could truly drive away the boredom. He could just tell that Azure had wanted to go sprinting into Bloodfell Manor kicking and screaming, facing the problem head-on, and yet again he had to pull out Darkheart’s gift, something he was beginning to despise doing so frequently. Especially using it frequently on Azure of all people, wildly aware that at least half the trust placed in him by the gardener stemmed from false roots. He’d never purposefully meant to place himself in the position of someone Azure trusted, especially considering he…didn’t feel like he deserved it.

Especially considering how similar Azure was to…them.

Trap never even once felt the same way about Azure that he had felt for Chance, but he couldn’t deny that sometimes he looked at Azure and saw the ghost that had haunted him in the midst of cold winter nights.

So doing what he was doing was making things even worse for his mental state.

But if he dropped interacting with Azure, he had no doubt that it would merely be a matter of time before they withered away. It was a careful balancing act of trying to keep someone from falling off the deep end and yet still letting them be themself.

He couldn’t wait until they were all out of here and he could pass Azure off to Two Time and Chance and wash his hands of the matter.

He was splayed out on the couch, staring off into the fireplace as he thought things through, humming to himself until footsteps caught his attention. A shadow loomed over him as someone peered over the back of the couch, and when Trap turned his head, a familiar shadowed face was peering at him with an implacably strange fondness that he could never figure out the reasoning for.

“You seem pretty lost in thought,” Sonnellino hummed, “Something on your mind?”

“Everything,” Trap groaned, “We still don’t know why The Spectre has been silent, and it’s starting to really bug me!”

“”S bugging all of us,” Sonne shook his head, “But people like that never stay quiet for too long. I expect we’ll be seeing it make its grand re-entrance soon enough.”

Trap sat up on the couch, allowing Sonne to take a seat next to him. It was silent for a long minute before Sonne and Trap began to speak at nearly the same time, leaving them both to awkwardly stop. Sonne stared for a moment, shuffling as if he was nervous to say something, which was quite amusing for Trap of all people, only for him to wave a hand and insist Trap speak first. Trap raised an eyebrow before continuing on.

“So how have things been in your circle?” Trap hummed, “Noli’s still in the doghouse I assume?”

“Not completely sure,” Sonne sighed, “Haven’t seen much of him. He’s just been quietly holed up in his room or 1x’s room. Just barely leaves to get dinner, you’ve seen him just as much as I have recently. I can’t tell if he’s hurt, or just plain embarrassed.”

“Or if 1x is just still pissed at him?” Trap questioned.

“Oh, they absolutely are still pissed at him,” Sonne laughed, “but I don’t know if that’s just entirely the reason. She’s been watching him like a hawk.”

“Deserves it after his recent series of stunts,” Trap laughed right back, “Seems like every other day he’s getting into something. At this point someone’s gotta put a leash on the guy to stop this.”

Sonne laughed maybe a bit too loudly at Trap’s joke, leaving Trap even further confused at the series of events that had led up to the conversation.

“What about your circle?” Sonne questioned after he calmed, “How’s Azure doing, hm?”

“Azure’s–”

…Wait

Where was Azure?

Usually if Azure left the cabin, he was in his garden, and if he left for his garden, he’d tell Trap. Azure never holed himself up in his room, so if he was in the cabin, he’d either be out here in the living room, or he’d be baking something in the kitchen. So Trap not knowing where he was was…

…

Oh no.

“I GOTTA GO, SORRY!” Trap suddenly sprung off the couch, sprinting for the back door and leaving a confused Sonnellino sitting on the couch, the faint call of his name swallowed by the slamming of the door as he sprinted off into the woods.
