Chapter Text
After retrieving the nocturnal mushrooms and subsequently being ambushed by the werewolf Toppleprey had sent after them, DJ and Superfish were able to beat him up badly enough he ran away. Although both of them were exhausted, neither were hurt bad enough that a simple healing spell wouldn't fix their wounds, although it did deplete the rest of Superfish's core energy.
"Superfish," DJ mumbled "I hate to ask you again, but Arun isn't going to be home tonight and I really don't want to be alone after this, so could you please stay with me tonight?"
"Uh, yeah, of course." Superfish replied. The encounter has roughed him up much more than he expected it to, and in a way, he actually wouldn't mind the company.
After riding the Vespa back for what felt like an eternity, they finally made it back to DJ's house. As soon as they came in the door, Aloo hopped off the couch and ran to them, gently rubbing her body at their legs. Since both of them were left completely famished from the encounter and neither of them had the energy to cook anything, DJ ordered a pizza and grabbed them some waters while they wait for it to arrive.
"DJ, can I tell you something?" Superfish asked, looking at DJ with a look in his eye much more genuine than he had seen from him before. DJ got the feeling that whatever he was about to tell him was going to be actually sincere for once, which for some reason made him a little nervous.
"Yeah, uh what's going on?" DJ replied, butterflies swarming around in his stomach.
"Um, what you said earlier about that I really do care, I wanted to say that yeah, I do care about you. I realized when that werewolf attacked us today that I was really scared for you to get hurt. It's strange, but I've kinda enjoyed our time together and getting to know you."
"Oh, uh thanks, I care about you too." DJ had never seen Superfish be anything but cocky and self-absorbed, it was nice to see a new side of him. "Heh, I thought this was all just 'for the core'!"
"W-well I mean the core is still very important! I've just liked having something close to a friend, or um-"
"Aww, you think of me as a friend Fishface?" DJ could tell Superfish was getting really flustered, why did he think this was kind of cute?
"Well um yeah kinda I guess, I don't know I've never had one before, witches don't really do that sort of thing."
"It's okay, I think of you as my friend too." DJ sat down directly beside him on the couch and wrapped his hand around his shoulder. Superfish's face was now burning bright red and his heart was pounding like a drum in his chest. Why was a human making him feel this way? "So is it safe to assume you'll still hang around once you get the core back?"
"Um, yeah maybe so, at least a little bit." This was the most Superfish had ever opened up to anybody, and it actually felt… good. He felt like he could actually be open and honest with DJ, something he certainly never felt with any witch before. Witches showing any sort of vulnerability meant they were weak in Obscaria, but maybe he didn't have to always be strong around DJ.
DJ flipped through the channels on the TV looking for a movie or show for them to watch and ultimately landed on some corny sit-com that looked better than anything else currently on air. It looked to be the series finale with one of the main characters getting married and all of their friends and family were there supporting them.
"So what is it they are doing here?" Superfish asked, confused as to why everyone looked so overly happy.
"They're getting married, have you not ever seen a wedding before?" DJ answered.
"No, what is 'getting married' and a 'wedding'?"
"So basically when two people deeply love and care for each other, they agree to spend the rest of their lives together, which is called getting married, and they invite people to come celebrate with them, which is the wedding. People usually have dated and liked each other for a long time before they get married and have a wedding."
"Oh okay, witches don't like each other enough to do things like that. So when your friends talk about liking vampire girls or werewolf girls, does that mean they want to marry one eventually?"
"Uh, yeah, I guess they probably would like that."
"So why didn't you answer their question the other day? Do you like anyone and want to marry someone that you don't want them to know?"
"Uhh…" DJ heart started racing and had a hard time coming up with how to answer that question. Should I tell him the truth, that I don't like girls that way? I mean, if they don't date or get married, I guess witches don't have a sense of homophobia either. "Well uh, most boys would want to marry a girl, but I uh, would actually prefer to marry another boy, and I don't know if they would want to be friends with me anymore if they knew that. A lot of humans don't like other humans who want to date the same gender, and I'm scared they might not accept me if they knew the truth".
"Oh, I didn't know humans cared about such things. Heh, would you like to marry me then human?"
"Don't get ahead of yourself Fishboy!" DJ wondered though, would it really be so bad if the answer was yes?
The pizza arrived not long after, still piping hot. Superfish had never had pizza before, but damn did it look and smell good! He took one bite into it and wept, if he knew all human food tasted this good, he would've left Obscaria a long time before he did. Did humans have some magical ability he didn't know about they use to make delicious food? "Mmh, I still don't know how humans do this!" Superfish exclaimed while still chewing his pizza, "This might be the best thing I ever tasted! "
DJ couldn't help but think it was cute how Superfish's whole face lit up after trying the pizza. Gah, why was he making him feel this way? For being such an egotistical bastard at times, there was also something he found so charming about him. "You know, since we're officially 'friends' now, maybe we should take the day tomorrow to just hang out and get our minds off this 'core' stuff for just a bit." DJ suggested. "Maybe we could go eat somewhere and you could try more human food and do some other fun things."
"Well, I don't know if it's a good idea to take our minds off the core with everything that's happened… but human food is kinda my weakness, so maybe it wouldn't hurt for just one day!"
"Great! I know just the place I want to have you try!"
The both of them were pretty tired after finishing their dinner, so they decided to go to bed not long after. "DJ, where are your spare covers again?" Superfish asked.
"Actually, do you want to sleep in the bed with me? I imagine it would be much more comfortable than sleeping on the floor again." Superfish cheeks turned a pale rose color at the question and began tripping over his words. DJ noticed and thought maybe he crossed a line. Shit, did I make things awkward? "Oh um, only if you'd be okay with it, that is, or I could take the floor if you'd be uncomfortable-"
"Oh no you don't have to do that, I guess I could sleep in the bed with you if that's alright."
"Y-yeah, that's totally fine!"
Both boys then changed into some more comfortable clothes and crawled in the bed together. Being so close to each Superfish, DJ could smell the scent of jasmine flowers again, and was picking up on some other notes as well. Is that, eucalyptus? Damn he smells good, I wonder what products he uses to smell like that, or do witches just naturally smell nice? Superfish began feeling that all too familiar tightness in his chest laying next to DJ, but at the same time he felt at ease. No one had ever made him feel quite like this before, and he was realizing that he was beginning to like it, maybe a bit more than he should.
