Chapter Text
A strange, peculiarly shaped thing fluttered in the corner of Its socket.
It slowly turned, pushing apart the thicket that the strange thing had hid between. It was confusing trying to find what had caught Its attention. Whatever the thing was; the thing had hidden well from the curious skeleton.
It opened it’s mouth, and out came slow, bubbling noises. “Bwuuh..bwwahhh..” It growled. It continued pressing forward, clenching the dirt and pebbles between Its feet in tandem.
The thing moves. It’s a feathered thing; black and oil like. It’s longer than It had thought it would be, with a strange mouth–pointed and slightly curved with a small bump on it’s top. It slowly crept towards the thing, mouth falling open with mindless noises. “Luhh..luuuhh..” It mumbled, reaching out its phalanges–
It darted for the thing, feeling the leathery, soft feeling of feathers. The thing made a strangled noise; a squawk. The thing squirmed and cried as It tightly held it up; a reward for this new, fresh task.
The thing attempts to spread out its strange, feathery appendages. It squirms and wiggles–and then, the strangest feeling spreads throughout the skeleton monster. As if something is nipping and picking at them. It’s a wondrous, new feeling; scratchy and attempting to break the boney hands It has.
In some strange need to know; Its sockets drag down to where the thing has begun using its mouth to pick at Its bones. The thing is still struggling from its restraint and grasp around their lithe form.
Biting me…
It slowly raised the pecking thing; still clenched around the body. The feathers were smooth and slid between its fingers like the blue grass did; although thicker and more solid, and not at all as beautiful to stare at.
Biting me…
It opened its mouth, slowly bringing the thing close to it–the thing squirmed and cried harder; it was reminded of Bundle. Floundering and bumbling along, constant noise and whining at Bundle's mouth. The thing continued it’s struggle and even pecked at the thin corner of it’s mouth. A sensitive shiver coursed throughout It.
Bite back.
It was a similar noise to when It crushed the strange, black and red critter between It’s teeth. The crunch and crinkle of bones as It grinded them together–but something entirely new flooded its mouth.
Something gooey. Thick, heavy, and staining the inside of It’s face.
It’s phalanges became stained with something that drooled from where the thing’s head had been. It was a vivid, musky color—red. The feeling of it oozing between it’s bone indentions was uncomfortable and led to an itchy sensation quickly.
It dropped the thing from its phalanges; watching it thud on the grass. It stared, stilling tasted the mess inside its mouth. It tasted rustic and empty, and when it spluttered and spat out the things gnawed on head, the taste was still in its mouth.
“Bluhh..” It mumbled; wiping its face with its arm. It watched as the bone was stained a pinkish color; smeared all over the forearm. It analyzed its arm with mild curiosity and then, satisfied, stepped over the discarded thing on the ground; split in two.
The cycles pass just like that. Bundle has been out for a very long time, and it has begun thinking Bundle must’ve returned to their small settlement on the grass now. Perhaps the wonderment of the pretty dust and ever-expanding forest has worn off now. It wishes–somehow, even though such an action feels strange and ingenuine–that it could go back as well.
But no matter what turn it goes through, it always finds itself lost and in circles.
Thing has begun melting away. It realized this after It’s third time passing by the blue grass and then finding the split corpse on the ground. Now, instead of leathery, lush feathers of black; thing has been replaced by a mangled, awful smelling thing. It can see small slivers of white jutting out from where It discarded thing.
Another strange thing has begun happening.
Small footsteps have begun appearing after It’s. It's assumed that this was Bundle tracking after them. It only made sense to it–It had left to find Bundle, Bundle would, of course; leave to find It.
It settled down at a small shrubbery. Its bones were stained with dirt and other such grime; one of their forearms stained a strange brown color when it had once been smeared pink with whatever the gooey spectacle in thing had been. It could not find any reason why such a drastic change in color could happen, but It doesn't linger on this.
It waits, phalanges rubbing through the green leaves of the shrub. It had begun experiencing an odd sensation; the feeling of knowledge simply being poured into Its head as It continued to exist. Leaves. Rain. Shrubs. Rocks. All new words and understandings that had seemed to be attached to It; despite It having never considered these things having existed before but coming to the strange realization they always had.
A stick crackles.
Its head bursts up, sockets widening in a curiosity they couldn’t contain.
An odd creature stands before It. Not like the flimsy critter in black and red, and not at all like the feathery thing was.
It stood on two limbs like It; but they were thicker and peach colored. A face framed by black curls, and a rather pretty item wrapped around their head; a red ribbon. They clutched a strange item in their hands–they seemed to be shaking.
They both wait.
“Are you..a nice..monster?” The creature slowly wobbled out; their body still posted up as if ready for some sort of attack, “Because you seem like a dirty one, but I don’t think that makes someone bad. That’d be very rude, my mummy says so.”
Its head cocked to the side. The creature flinched back, but their hands slowly came to their side–the hand around the sharp item in their hand still tightly grasped. The creature looked back and forth and slowly approached it.
“Although, my mummy also says–th–that monsters are very, very bad, and you’ll attack without reason. And she’s been awfully right so far, did you know that?” The creature spoke rather strangely; fast, squeaky. It was unlike any noise it has ever heard.
The creature didn’t whine like Bundle, and it didn’t squawk like the thing did. It wondered if it crackled and crunched in its mouth like the critter and thing did.
“..Alright, then? You’ll b–be a kind monster, won’t you?”
It stared at the creature. It slowly rose up, feeling Its knees buckle slightly. It wonders how many cycles had been settled near the shrub–It had stopped counting after they no longer had any more appendages too. The creature gulped and forced themselves into a standstill. The creature continues to grip the strange thing in their hands.
It blinks.
“Ah–we’re the same height!” The creature gasps. It doesn't know what this means and tilted it’s head. “L–like, uh, ah! We’re the same size.” The creature seemed to–what an odd expression. Their mouth opened wide and showed all of their teeth.
Was it curious if It crunched as well?
It stretched out It’s hand and dragged their phalanges over the creature's lip. It was strange–it was a pursed, pink thing. It is unsure if It has the same thing and brings the phalanges back to try and find it’s own.
The creature blinked and seemed to ease up; they bubbled out a strange noise–laughter. Bubbly and full, relived and bright–as if this was the best outcome.
It didn’t understand.
“Oh, great heavens, you must be the last–the only–kind monster in existence.” The creature breathed out; It watched their chest as they did. It did this odd and strange rising and falling motion–It’s eye lights dragged to it’s own ribs. It breathed–and watched in utter fascination as their ribs did the same.
It jolted out of this fascination by its boney hand being grabbed by a fleshy one. It stared up at the creature with a blank expression. “We must be the same age; right? You look young, after all, and we’re the same size..” The creature blinked. “Where are your clothes?”
It didn’t respond; what were clothes? What were all these things? Its phalanges travelled forward and gripped on something soft and light: fabric. It’s brain fills in what this is, but It is still unsure on how they knew what this was in the first place
“Buhh..” It moaned in confusion, staring at the creature. When would they bite each other? They both stood with such a need to know, didn’t they?
“Ah..well, I suppose, monsters may not all be clothed; especially if they are young,” the creature let out a huff of noise. “Do you even know what you are?”
Skeleton. It is a skeleton. It stared at the creature–who made a small noise of disbelief. “My mummy was wrong then. She said monsters always were born vile beasts; but I suppose that you must not know that–you must not even have a mummy, too!” They murmured in what looked to be pity.
Pity? Why does it know that word?
“Well! It’s okay! Let’s be together, and we can find the–the terrible end to this dreadful forest!” The creature decided, and ran forward–It made an airy noise, feeling themselves be dragged along.
It looked behind its shoulder, and then back at the creature.
When will they bite each other?
