How to Train the Very Best (Like No Dragon Ever Was)

Chapter 30: Lost Plot Points and Character Moments from a Discontinued Story

Chapter Text

On August 12, 2025, I announced to my readers that I had been forced to discontinue "How to Train the Very Best (Like No Dragon Ever Was)" due to circumstances beyond my control.

I was gearing up to continue updating the story that year, and I even had ten additional chapters all written and ready to go. However, several files on my laptop became corrupted – none of them important, thankfully, but among the lost files were all my recent progress on "How to Be the Very Best"… as well as the entire planned script.

Needless to say, I was devastated and discouraged. If the script had survived, I could've easily picked the story up where I'd left off, but without it, I had far too little to go on and would have to rewrite everything from scratch. Instead, I'd decided to leave the story unfinished and continue work on other projects I'd been planning in the background.

To those of you who've been following this story and looking forward to further updates, I'm truly sorry to disappoint you.

I don't want to leave you all with nothing, though, so I've posted this chapter - a collection of every detail about the story that I could remember from the original script (including Pokemon teams, major character moments, and the Kalos League) - to give you an idea of how the story was supposed to progress and conclude.

Pokemon Teams

Hiccup's final team consisted of Toothless, Skullcrusher, Sharpshot, Inferno, a Garchomp named Whisper, and a Dragapult named Torch.

Whisper was a reference to the Whispering Death from "What Flies Beneath", and would've had a whole rivalry with Toothless. Their mutual hatred would motivate each other to become stronger – "I can't look pathetic, or else they'll never let me hear the end of it!"

Torch would've been a gift from Stoick to Hiccup when the former visits from Galar. His name is a reference to the Typhoomerang, but the justification would be that he represents a torch of hope after Stoick encourages Hiccup to keep following his dream.

Hiccup would've received a Salamencite from Elite Four member Drasna – Drasna being Valka's aunt in this continuity.

Fishlegs, as a non-battler, would have kept his team restricted to Meatlug and Darkvarg. Darkvarg would have eventually become Tyranitar and Mega Evolved.

Astrid's team would've been Stormfly, Talonflame, Crobat, Hawlucha, Aerodactyl, and Gliscor. After warming up to Hiccup and getting some character development, she would've given them all nicknames. Talonflame would be Zephyr, Crobat would be Sneaky, Hawlucha would be Fearless (after Finn Hofferson), Aerodactyl would be Flightmare, and Gliscor would be Garffiljorg (Tuffnut's idea, to Astrid's annoyance).

Speaking of Tuffnut, him and Ruffnut would share a team of six between them. They would've been Barf and Belch the Scovillain, Wingnut the Skarmory, Scaldy the Gyarados, Chicken the Pidgeot, and Macey the Tinkaton. Both Scaldy and Chicken would Mega Evolve.

Snotlout would have continued with his goal to become a better Dragon-type master than Hiccup, by catching a team of six non-Dragon-type reptiles. They were going to be Hookfang the Charizard, Speedy the Heliolisk, Fireworm the Seviper, Girl Hookfang the Krookodile, Pain the Rampardos, and Minden the Lapras. Hookfang would have eventually Mega Evolved with Charizardite X, rewarding him with a proper Dragon-type after he accepted his Pokemon for what they were instead of being frustrated with what they weren't.

Hiccup's Pokemon and Toothless' Character Development

Toothless and a few of Hiccup's other Pokemon would have their own character arcs as well.

I'd already started Skullcrusher's arc before the Tower of Mastery tournament, where he starts trying to learn Dragon Dance. He struggles with it all the way until Coumarine City, when Astrid tells Hiccup that it's obvious Skullcrusher isn't compatible with the move and suggests teaching the Axew something else. When Stoick comes into the picture and Hiccup hopes to convince him about his desire to become a master Dragon Tamer, Skullcrusher asks Hiccup to keep teaching it to him in order to impress Stoick. However, Skullcrusher would then go on to evolve during a battle with Team Flare, learning Swords Dance instead.

Likewise, Inferno had already started her arc of learning to trust Hiccup and the idea that greater strength should be pursued together. During the Tower of Mastery tournament, Hiccup and Heather would devise a strategy to support Inferno and give her the best chance of winning one of their battles, boosting her ego and showing her that she can place her trust in her allies. This culminates in her evolution to Tyrantrum during a tag battle with Snotlout and Hookfang.

Whisper the Gabite would start out with a hatred of Toothless, making her debut by attacking him at his most vulnerable. However, when Team Flare attacks the group, and her by extension, her desire for revenge would lead to her teaming with Hiccup and allowing herself to be caught by him. Eventually, Olympia would reveal to Hiccup that she's motivated to constantly antagonize Toothless because she was once abandoned by her old Trainer in favor of a Shelgon, sparking resentment for Toothless' species. By making her and Toothless work together in a double battle against Olivia, Hiccup would turn their mutual hatred into a (slightly) friendlier rivalry.

Torch the Dreepy, as mentioned, would start out as a gift from Stoick, representing a "torch" of hope and Stoick's rekindled faith in Hiccup's dream. While Torch didn't have a character arc planned, his development as a fighter would've been slow, and Hiccup would patiently raise and nurture him until he would be rewarded at the Pokemon League with a powerful Dragapult.

Sharpshot was the only one without a dedicated character arc – just a strong and reliable Pokemon that would've evolved at key moments to get Hiccup and his friends out of a jam.

As for Toothless himself, I had planned several stages of character development. The first was related to his evolution, and the second focused on his tendency to stubbornly do his own thing in circumstances where he believes he knows better than Hiccup.

Toothless would've evolved into Shelgon in the final battle of the Tower of Mastery tournament, but this would cost Hiccup the battle because of the drastic changes to Toothless' body. Attempting to battle as usual would result in him falling on his face or comically rolling across the arena, unable to right himself. This would spark an arc that lasted all the way to Lumiose City of Hiccup trying to find a new battle style for Toothless.

Astrid would have joined the group at this point due to her own character arc, and she'd be the one to suggest that Hiccup make use of Toothless' round body and have him attack by rolling. Toothless' stubbornness would cause him to reject the new rolling strategy and run off to keep practicing the old battle style that Hiccup and him had spent so much time cultivating. He believed that so long as he tried hard enough, he'd gain control over his new form and be able to battle with Hiccup as they always used to.

Eventually, after harrowing battles with Team Flare and a wild Gabite, Toothless would accept the new strategy and eventually perfect it during the Gym battle with Clemont.

Toothless was established early in the story to be stubborn and occasionally ignore Hiccup's wishes. This was always a quirk that led to some minor squabbles and nothing more, except when it becomes the key factor in Toothless' dilemma after evolving into Shelgon. However, it becomes a problem when Hiccup tries mastering Mega Evolution. Despite their strong bond, Hiccup was never 100% in sync with Toothless due to this stubborn streak, and so their first attempts at mastering the Mega Salamence form are a failure.

This point was inspired greatly by Korrina's arc in the XY anime. Toothless, like Lucario, has a tendency to do his own thing, which Hiccup doesn't mind at first. However, this escalates when Toothless begins either refusing orders or acting of his own accord in order to protect Hiccup. While this is an admirable quality, it's enough of a rift between the two to prevent them from controlling Mega Evolution. Eventually, Hiccup convinces Toothless to trust him to look out for his own safety, and that Trainer and Pokemon are equal parts involved in battles. This happens during the climax of Team Flare's plot, and by battling on equal footing, they're able to surprise and placate an otherwise enraged Yveltal.

Hiccup and Fishlegs Character Arcs

Hiccup would have received relatively little character development as he continued to pursue his dream of becoming a Dragon Tamer as strong as Valka. Most of his development would have been related to helping his team grow, and therefore tied to the events mentioned above.

Skullcrusher's "Dragon Dance arc" has Hiccup learn that certain Pokemon just don't perform certain moves well despite technically being able to learn them. He eventually relents and decides to teach Skullcrusher a move that works better with his all-out, in-your-face battle style.

As we saw in the Reflection Cave chapters, Hiccup demonstrated to Inferno that he can be trusted to help her in her pursuit of greater strength, and learned to be better in tune with his team's feelings as Valka demonstrated.

Learning about Whisper's past allows Hiccup to better mediate her conflicts with Toothless, and encourages them to compete with one another to help their training.

Fishlegs would primarily work on improving his Pokemon info cards with feedback from Professor Sycamore. He grows more enthusiastic about Pokemon battling and raising them for battle after participating in the Tower of Mastery Tag Tournament and getting battle advice from Astrid.

Additionally, he would have a short arc similar to the Defenders of Berk episode "Worst in Show", where he becomes so focused on training Darkvarg for Mega Evolution that he briefly neglects Metalug. She would run away to hide in Terminus Cave, prompting Hiccup and Fishlegs to run after her to save her. This would then lead to her discovering Zygarde, which awakens in a bad mood and sets off an earthquake that causes all the Pokemon in Terminus Cave to descend into panic and chaos.

Something briefly mentioned at the beginning of the story was Fishlegs' belief that Meatlug is already perfect as she is, to the point where he had her wear an Everstone collar. When she runs away from Fishlegs, she chews it off in protest. During the chaotic escape from Terminus Cave, she evolves into Rhydon and saves Fishlegs from toppling into a fissure by grabbing him and climbing up the cliff with her new, powerful arms.

As for Darkvarg, Fishlegs would evolve him into Tyranitar when he helps Valka investigate a dying Pokemon habitat within Victory Road, essentially rewarding him for acting upon his love for Pokemon. He Mega Evolves Darkvarg during the Team Flare plot when Professor Sycamore lends him his Key Stone.

At the very end of the story, Fishlegs would decide to go on to become a Pokemon Ranger, inspired by his involvement in the Team Flare plot and his time helping Valka with her work.

Astrid's Character Arc

As mentioned in some of the early chapters, I combined Astrid's development in the first HTTYD movie with Paul's development in the Diamond/Pearl anime. In a nutshell, Astrid thinks of all her Pokemon as allies working toward a common goal, with her being the general in command. She's more fond of Stormfly, her first Pokemon, whom she believes to be the only Pokemon as dedicated to their shared goal as she is.

Astrid's arc, then, basically boils down to Hiccup helping her see her Pokemon as friends and partners. While I didn't want to portray her way of thinking as wrong, it's definitely flawed, and her tendency to keep her Pokemon at arm's length is what's holding her back.

Meanwhile, she sees Hiccup's willingness to befriend and play with his Pokemon as useless pampering that will negatively effect their performance in battle, which is why she can't comprehend why he's going for the Kalos League anyway. Her view of Hiccup at this point is similar to her view of Hiccup when he joins Dragon Training in the movie – she's not taking it seriously and doesn't belong there, and she takes it as an insult to her own strength and dedication.

After the Tower of Mastery tournament, Astrid would have received an Aerodactylite from Korrina as a prize for winning (while her partner Fishlegs got Tyranitarite). In her Gym battle against Korrina, she would fail spectacularly at controlling Mega Aerodactyl and receive a pep talk from the Gym Leader that she takes major offense to.

Korrina sparks a frustration and long-withheld anger in Astrid that comes exploding to the surface and spurs her into doing reckless things out of desperation. It's revealed that, when she failed to defeat the Sinnoh Elite Four, she was told the exact same thing that Korrina did – that it's the bond between Trainer and Pokemon that makes a Champion so strong and, despite her strength and potential, she'll never be that strong if she doesn't see her Pokemon as equals.

Astrid is so frustrated – and insulted that Hiccup got Korrina's badge before she did – that she pursues the rumor of a Legendary Pokemon appearing in Azure Bay. When Hiccup, Fishlegs, and the Thorston twins find her battling a Zapdos, they combine their power to save her and Stormfly from being killed by it. Her fear for Stormfly overcomes her desire for power, and her prioritizing Stormfly's safety convinces Zapdos to back off. This, in turn, gives her the opportunity to swallow her pride and apologize to it for her selfish attempt to capture it.

From here, Astrid agrees to join Hiccup and Fishlegs so they can learn from each other and help each other become stronger. Astrid becomes more willing to accept Hiccup's advice when she learns for the first time that Stormfly enjoys games, and when she realizes how much pain she put Aerodactyl through when she forced it to Mega Evolve. From there on, she's cautiously open to Hiccup's suggestions about bonding with her team.

As Astrid travels with Hiccup, she's seen learning more about their individual quirks. Hawlucha is singled out due to its tendency to showboat its strength, which she previously discouraged because she believed it too focused on showing off instead of actually battling.

In return, Astrid offers advice to Hiccup regarding his training. She's the one who figures out to use Toothless' new evolved form to his advantage and incorporate rolling into his moves. She figures this solution out after reflecting on Hiccup's battle against Ramos and his tendency to use his Pokemon creatively, which she acknowledges she can't do very well.

After Astrid splits off from Hiccup to continue her journey alone, she returns in Anistar City to show Hiccup her progress. She splits off from him again before Victory Road, in order to challenge Korrina again. There would've been a chapter dedicated to Astrid's Gym battle and revealing her long-awaited mastery over Mega Evolution to show how far she's come with her team.

Part of why I hate losing all my progress so much is because Astrid's development was one of the parts I enjoyed writing the most.

Snotlout's Character Arc

Snotlout is treated as a joke character for most of the story, with his amusing side plot of trying to become a better Dragon-type Trainer than Hiccup with a team of non-Dragon-types. However, Hiccup ends up being trapped with Snotlout in the Frost Cavern by Team Flare, where he learns that – just like in canon – Snotlout's bluster is because of a desperate wish to win his father's approval. Hiccup and Snotlout realize that they're more alike than they realized – again, like in canon – and they work together to defeat Team Flare, earning each other's mutual respect.

By the time Snotlout fights Hiccup at the League, he's abandoned the notion of being a Dragon-type Trainer and embraced his team for the group of strong Pokemon it really is.

Ruffnut and Tuffnut's Character Arc

These two are side characters and don't have any character development. They were to make several appearances and occasionally assist Hiccup in a bunch of dangerous situations. They were also going to be a minor part of the Pokemon League and get involved when it came time to defeat Team Flare.

Heather's Character Arc

Heather, as hinted at during some of the published chapters, is tied to Team Flare, and follows them and their activities throughout the story. It's eventually revealed that she's actually an undercover (and very young) member of the International Police, mirroring Anabel in Sun/Moon and Emma in XY and Legends Z-A.

Her hints that Team Flare has something that she wants is technically untrue. All she wants is to uncover their secret plans and bring them to justice.

While Heather and Hiccup are teased a few times to have crushes on each other, any chance of a relationship dies when Heather takes Hiccup on a date to the Flair Café – Team Flare's secret headquarters – in order to confirm its suspicious nature. When they're subsequently captured by Mable, the revelation that Heather used him to further her own goals, even though she expresses earnest regret about it, convinces Hiccup to abandon pursuing a relationship with her.

Heather disappears for a while, but she reappears in the most unexpected way when Hiccup and the group visit Anistar City. She springs up on them wearing a Team Flare uniform, where she reveals that she's infiltrated them. She tips them off that Team Flare is planning something in Anistar, which allows them to mobilize alongside Olympia, Sycamore, Valka, and Ruff and Tuff when Team Flare attempts to steal the Anistar Sundial.

She doesn't show up again until the climax of the Team Flare arc, where it's revealed that Xerosic's mysterious soldier Essentia is actually an unconscious Heather sealed in an AI-controlled power suit. Hiccup defeats her in battle and frees her, allowing her to help out during the battles with Lysandre and Yveltal.

Stoick and Valka

Stoick would appear in the flesh just after the incident at the Kalos Power Plant. He visits Kalos on a business trip, being a collaborator with the Poke Ball Factory on the development of the Master Ball, and continues to allude to the idea of Hiccup coming back to work at his company after he's finished the Kalos League.

The arc from Lumiose City to Laverre City would focus on Hiccup's anxieties about convincing his father he's serious about following in Valka's footsteps, and would end in Stoick accepting that and gifting Hiccup a Dreepy after a battle with Team Flare.

Valka would continue to show up at various points on Hiccup's journey as she does field work for Sycamore. Most significantly, starting at the Kalos Power Plant, she would have taken on a superhero persona called Altaria Mask with a Mega Evolved Cloudjumper. Obviously, this is a reference to Dexio and Sina's "Defenders of Kalos" stint in the games and Blaziken Mask in the anime.

Team Flare, the Ultimate Weapon, and Yveltal

Personally, I love Team Flare and wish that the games had implemented them more effectively. My approach to Team Flare was that I wanted to portray Lysandre's plan in the games to be as serious and threatening as Team Flare was in the anime.

The Team Flare members that make the most appearances are the scientists, so when writing them I wanted them to be as threatening as possible, instead of just glorified grunts. Aside from Xerosic, none of them have much of a personality – even in the anime, they may as well all be the same person. Though I only ended up showing Bryony, I wanted to give them each a distinct personality.

Bryony was the ice-cold, efficient, calculating one.

Aliana would've appeared at the Kalos Power Plant, and would be full of pretend cheer and friendliness, often calling the group by terms of endearment and generally acting amused by their opposition.

Celosia would be the one to steal the Master Ball from the Poke Ball Factory. She'd be twitchy and paranoid, snapping at her grunts for things like walking too close to her and becoming terrified when Hiccup and Co. are close to defeating her.

Mable would've shown up at Flair Café and Frost Cavern, and her whole thing was being a sneering, cackling, bloodthirsty bully.

Xerosic would've been consistent with his established character.

Starting from the Poke Ball Factory onwards, all of the scientists would utilize Mega Evolution. I just thought it made sense, given that they're trying to revive the Ultimate Weapon which is powered by Infinity Energy. Bryony would use Mega Mawile, Aliana had Mega Manectric, Celosia had Mega Beedrill, and Mable had Mega Glalie. Xerosic himself wouldn't battle, but he'd have Essentia use her own Pokemon as well as a Mega Absol.

Lysandre was going to be similar to his game counterpart, with his goal of world destruction being born out of sadness for what the current world has become and a desire to reset it to the beautiful thing it once was.

Team Flare would show up at the Poke Ball Factory to steal the Master Ball, Frost Cavern to dig for Mega Stones, and the Winding Woods to find Yveltal's sealed cocoon. This all would've lead to Lysandre using Yveltal as the Ultimate Weapon's power source – he wanted Yveltal specifically so, in case things went wrong and the Ultimate Weapon failed, he could awaken the Pokemon of Destruction and end the world anyway. When that happens and Hiccup and Co. free Yveltal, Lysandre captures it in the Master Ball and uses it as his last Pokemon in their battle against him.

However, when Yveltal is awakened, it's in a seriously bad mood and instantly turns on him. It speaks the words "Death has no master" and turns him to dust on the spot, before flying out to destroy all of Kalos to eliminate the humans that, based on that poor first impression, believe themselves to be above the gods.

Yveltal, as well as Xerneas and Zygarde, are portrayed as deities for the brief time they physically appear. They speak with voices that are simultaneously male and female, and refer to themselves as Life, Death, and Balance. Because of a personal headcanon of mine, Xerneas sounds slightly more masculine and Yveltal more feminine. Hiccup assigns them those pronouns to make it easier on himself; trying to focus on both the male and female parts of their voices for too long gives him a headache.

Yveltal is not evil or in conflict with Xerneas in this continuity, it's just angry. When it calms down, it thanks Hiccup for preventing it for making a mistake in its shortsightedness. It values Xerneas' role of bringing life as much as its own role of bringing destruction, understanding that one can't exist without the other.

Zygarde doesn't have any major roles in the story. It's responsible for awakening Xerneas when Yveltal rampages, and is prepared to put a stop to things itself if they get out of hand. However, Hiccup and Co. prove themselves to have a strong enough bond with their Pokemon to bring Yveltal back to its senses, and Zygarde is satisfied and goes back into hiding.

The Winding Woods Mini Arc

After reaching Snowbelle City, Hiccup, Astrid, and Fishlegs would receive word that the Gym Leader was away and that Team Flare were doing dastardly deeds in the heart of the Winding Woods. This would kick off a small, but extremely important, arc that tested them all and gave them opportunities to show off how they'd grown as characters.

The Winding Woods are built up as a haven for Ghost- and Fairy-type Pokemon, and as such are full of illusions. What follows is an adventure similar to the swamp episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender, in which Hiccup, Fishlegs, and Astrid are accosted by illusions representing their past.

Hiccup is confronted by visions Valka and Stoick telling him they've lost faith in his ability to live up to Valka's legacy. Toothless, who's sharing the vision, is motivated to defeat an illusion of Cloudjumper – a testament to his faith in his Trainer.

Astrid is confronted by her old team as well as the Sinnoh Elite Four, prompting her to prove to herself that she's different now and believes in her team. She's rewarded when Stormfly hears her cries and dispels the illusion.

Fishlegs confronts his own cowardice when he comes across illusions of Team Flare ganging up on Meatlug. He courageously fends off the visions and pushes his way to Meatlug's side, and they defeat the Ghost-types responsible.

Upon reaching the Pokemon Village, Hiccup and Co. would've allied with Wulfric to confront Team Flare outside the , where instead of Mewtwo, they had found Yveltal's cocoon and were going to transport it back to Geosenge Town. A huge battle would break out, particularly a fierce double battle where Hiccup and Wulfric would fight Xerosic and Essentia.

At the climax of the battle, Essentia's Mega Absol would destroy part of the cliff they were standing on, sending Hiccup plummeting to his death. Toothless, regaining consciousness just in time to see this, would have screamed with fear and charged off the cliff, thinking of nothing but saving his Trainer. This would have triggered his evolution into Salamence – keeping in line with the Pokedex lore about the evolution being triggered by a longing wish.

The chapters in which they struggle through the Winding Woods would have been titled "Facing Flare with Eyes Wide Open, Part 1 and 2", after the episode of the BW anime, "Facing Fear with Eyes Wide Open". It's my all-time favorite dub anime title (that doesn't involve a pun).

Future Gym Battles

I didn't have anything major in terms of story or character planned for the Gym battles, but they still would've been important milestones for Hiccup.

The battle against Korrina would've had Toothless defeat one of her Pokemon despite his recent evolution holding him back, and Inferno ends up being the one to defeat her Mega Medicham.

When Hiccup fights Ramos, the entire battle is shown from Astrid's point of view, and she demonstrates character development by reassuring Toothless that Hiccup will find a way to help him get back on his feet.

Hiccup initially loses to Valerie, failing to convince Stoick that his dream is worth pursuing, but wins the rematch after him and Fishlegs save Stoick from Team Flare at the Poke Ball Factory.

Hiccup fights Olympia with Toothless and Whisper, and they put aside their grudge in order to win the double battle.

The battle with Wulfric is where Hiccup tries Mega Evolution for the first time.

Kalos League

Much like in the XY anime, most of the early rounds would be glossed over in order to get to the good stuff. Team Flare would rear their heads before the final round, not after, and so the final round would act as a satisfying and optimistic conclusion to the story.

The third round (of five) would have pit Hiccup against Tuffnut in a 3v3. Tuffnut would use Tinkaton, Mega Pidgeot, and his sister's Scovillain in an attempt to trick Hiccup.

Hiccup and Snotlout would fight in the semifinals, in a full 6v6 battle. This would've been when Snotlout shows the results of his character growth, and graduated from comic relief to a ferociously competent Trainer that made great use of his Pokemon's natural characteristics – for example, having Speedy the Heliolisk run over water on the water battlefield. Some of the matchups would've been picked just for the fun of it, like Tyrantrum versus Rampardos on a volcano-themed field to evoke a Cretaceous era aesthetic. The ultimate match would be Mega Toothless versus Mega Hookfang X.

After the match, Spitelout would have come out to tell Snotlout – expecting to be scolded for not winning – how proud he was that his son was a semifinalist, and to demand Hiccup not to lose the finals and make the Jorgensons look bad.

The finals would have obviously been Hiccup versus Astrid, representing the culmination of their rivalry and their first full battle since Astrid embraced her Pokemon as friends rather than tools. Unfortunately, I don't remember most of the matchups, but I was planning to have the two "newcomers" – Garff and Torch – battle in the first round, and Fearless the Hawlucha would've had a big, showy, head-to-head brawl against Skullcrusher.

Mega Toothless would have defeated Stormfly before Astrid brought out Mega Aerodactyl. The final blow would have been a clash of Toothless' Steel Wing – a move he learned from Astrid – and Mega Aerodactyl's Dragon Pulse – a move she learned from Hiccup.

Astrid either would have won, or her and Hiccup would have tied, with Hiccup forfeiting the chance to fight the Elite Four so that Astrid could continue with her dream of becoming Champion. Astrid would then go on to challenge the Elite Four. Unlike her loss in the Sinnoh League, when she lost to Aaron, she and her team would have beaten three of the Elite Four before losing to Drasna.

At the very end, Hiccup and Astrid would agree to continue their journey by traveling to Galar together. Because Galar has one of the most competitive Pokemon Leagues in the world, it'd be the perfect place for them to get stronger.

And that's everything about the story that I remember after losing my script. This is the least I could do for all of you who really enjoyed the story. I hope you all can appreciate everything I'd planned, and look forward to more of my work.

(I'm taking precautions to back up everything I write now, so this won't happen again.)

Thanks to all of you for reading!

Notes:

End scene! Originally, I was planning on starting with Chapter 1 proper and getting into the story right away, but decided to add this quick prologue. HTTYD has always been a series built around Hiccup and Toothless, so I felt it important to show how their relationship started so that I could build on that foundation going forward.

I'm going to do my best to publish chapters weekly, but because life is messy, don't be surprised if updates take a few days more than that to be posted.

Thank you for reading!
