Chapter 12 — A Love That Defied Fate
The cave fell into silence.
Only Sanji's quiet sobs echoed through the chamber as he continued holding Zoro's cold hand.
No one moved.
No one dared to speak.
Then...
The witch smiled.
"I suppose..."
She clasped her hands behind her back.
"...it is finally time."
Everyone looked toward her.
She paused, letting the words settle like stones dropped into still water.
"Every tear you shed was real," she said softly. "Every choice you made was real. I merely allowed your souls to walk a future that had not yet come to pass."
Robin's eyes widened slightly.
"You experienced one possible tomorrow..."
The witch's smile deepened.
"...and now, you have been given the chance to choose a different one."
The crew stared in confusion.
"Wait," Usopp said slowly. "So... none of this actually happened?"
The witch shook her head.
"It happened. To you. In your hearts. In your memories. That future was as real as the pain you felt, the tears you shed, the confessions you made."
She looked at Sanji.
"You loved him. Truly. Deeply. Even when you thought it was too late."
She looked at Zoro's still form.
"And he loved you. So much that he gave up everything for your happiness."
"B-But—" Chopper stammered. "That means he's not—"
The witch raised a hand.
"Your swordsman is not dead. You are still exactly where you were ten years ago—the day after the marks first appeared. You merely experienced one possible future."
Sanji stared at her, his mind reeling.
"A future born from your choices."
She smiled warmly.
"I made a bet. With the gods themselves."
"A bet?" Nami repeated.
The witch nodded.
"They believed the bond between an Alpha and an Omega existed only because of instinct. They believed that once the bond disappeared, so would love."
She looked directly at Sanji.
"I disagreed."
The cave became deathly quiet.
"I believed that if love was genuine, it would survive. Even without a mark. Even without instincts. Even without fate."
She smiled warmly.
"For centuries, I searched for the perfect pair. Two souls who could not be more different. Who fought every day. Who insulted each other every chance they got. Who convinced everyone, including themselves, that they hated one another."
Her gaze softened.
"And yet, they still found their way back."
She looked upward, as though someone unseen stood above the cave.
"I've seen it. They defied the odds. They proved love is stronger than instinct. They chose each other, even after the bond was gone."
Sanji's hands trembled.
"...So Zoro..."
The witch nodded.
"Is alive. And waiting for you to make the right choice."
She looked at the crew.
"Would you like to return to the moment your Marimo agreed to your request?"
Sanji dropped to his knees.
Without hesitation.
Without pride.
Without shame.
He bowed deeply before her.
"...Please."
His voice trembled.
"I beg you."
"Please..."
"Send us back."
"I'll fix everything."
"I swear I will."
The witch looked toward Luffy.
"And you? If you return, you will not yet become Pirate King. You will lose the future you experienced. The All Blue will remain undiscovered. The world's map unfinished. The Void Century unread. None of your dreams will have happened."
She smiled.
"...Not yet."
Luffy didn't even hesitate.
"I don't care."
He grinned.
"I want my first mate back."
Nami nodded through her tears.
"So do I."
One by one, every Straw Hat agreed.
Not a single dream mattered if it meant losing one of their family.
The witch laughed happily.
"Excellent. Wonderful. Perfect."
She closed her eyes.
"My wager has been won. There is nothing left for me here."
She looked at each Straw Hat one final time.
"Goodbye. I sincerely hope that your true future is kinder than the one you have just witnessed."
The light surrounding her grew brighter.
"Farewell, Straw Hat Pirates."
Everything turned white.
"...Fine."
A familiar voice broke the silence.
Sanji's eyes snapped open.
The Sunny.
The deck.
The morning sunlight.
The same island.
The same day.
The same moment.
Standing only a few steps away was Zoro.
Alive.
Healthy.
Confused.
"...What?"
The swordsman frowned.
"Why's everyone staring at me?"
Nobody answered.
For one heartbeat, the entire crew simply stared.
Then—
"ZORO!"
Chopper tackled him first.
Nami hugged him from behind.
Usopp cried loudly.
Franky laughed while wiping away tears.
Brook played a joyful note.
Jinbe smiled.
Even Luffy wrapped both arms around his first crewmate.
"You idiot!"
"We thought we lost you!"
Zoro's eye widened.
"...The hell? Did everyone go crazy?"
He looked completely bewildered.
Robin simply smiled.
A genuine smile.
"...Welcome back."
Zoro blinked.
"...Back from where?"
Sanji stood frozen.
His Alpha stirred.
Not in grief.
Not in regret.
Warmth flooded through him.
The bond.
He could feel it again.
Still there.
Alive.
His mate.
His Marimo.
Without thinking, he grabbed Zoro's wrist.
"Oi!"
Before anyone could react, Sanji dragged him toward the crow's nest.
"The hell are you doing?!"
Once inside, Sanji shut the hatch.
The small room fell quiet.
Zoro crossed his arms.
"...Explain."
He frowned.
"I thought you wanted to get rid of this bond."
Sanji looked at him.
Really looked at him.
Bright green hair.
One visible eye.
The familiar scar.
Alive.
Breathing.
Standing right in front of him.
His hands slowly reached forward.
He gently turned Zoro by the shoulders.
Checking every inch of him.
His face.
His neck.
His arms.
His chest.
No wounds.
No pale skin.
No weakness.
Finally, Sanji let out a trembling sigh.
"...No."
His voice was quiet.
"...Never again."
A soft smile spread across his face.
"I'll never ask for that again."
Zoro blinked.
"...You're acting weird."
"I know."
Sanji laughed softly.
"Just let me."
Before Zoro could protest, Sanji wrapped both arms around him.
Holding him tightly.
As though letting go would make him disappear.
"...Thank you."
"...I'm sorry."
"...And..."
He took a shaky breath.
"...I love you."
The words tumbled out all at once.
Zoro froze.
His face turned bright red.
The blush spread all the way to his ears.
Sanji couldn't stop smiling.
"...You're blushing."
"Shut up!"
Zoro shoved him away.
Though not very hard.
"I am so confused right now!"
His face burned.
"Is this some stupid joke?!"
"Are you messing with me?!"
Sanji shook his head.
"No."
He gently took Zoro's hand.
Then...
He told him everything.
The witch.
The future.
The bargain.
The sacrifices.
His death.
Every regret.
Every tear.
Every word left unsaid.
Zoro listened without interrupting.
When Sanji finally finished...
Silence filled the room.
"...Seriously?"
Zoro whispered.
"...I really did all that?"
Sanji nodded.
"...Yeah."
"And I regret every single thing I said."
"If you don't believe me..."
"We can ask Robin."
Zoro looked down.
His cheeks were still red.
"...So..."
"You know."
Sanji smiled.
"I do."
"...You know I like you."
"I do."
Zoro mumbled under his breath.
"...Damn."
Another embarrassed silence followed.
Then Sanji gently cupped his face.
"I love you."
"I don't care about instincts."
"I don't care about marks."
"I don't care what the world thinks."
"I want to spend my life with you."
"I want to grow old beside you."
"I want to argue with you."
"I want to cook for you."
"I want to build a family with you."
"I want all of it..."
"...with you."
Zoro searched his eyes.
"...Are you sure?"
Sanji didn't answer with words.
Instead...
He leaned forward.
Their lips met in a slow, gentle kiss.
When they finally separated...
Sanji rested his forehead against Zoro's.
"I've never been more sure."
Zoro slowly smiled.
A real smile.
One that Sanji had never seen before.
His arms quietly wrapped around Sanji's waist.
"...Then..."
He buried his face into Sanji's shoulder.
"...Don't make me wait another ten years."
Sanji laughed through the tears gathering in his eyes.
"...Never."
He tightened his arms around Zoro.
"Not in this lifetime. Not in ten years. Not even if fate tries to separate us again."
Zoro smiled against his shoulder.
"...Good."
Outside the crow's nest...
The Thousand Sunny sailed toward its real future.
One where dreams had yet to be achieved.
One where hardships still waited.
One where arguments between a cook and a swordsman would continue every single day.
But this time...
Neither of them would mistake love for hatred.
And no matter what fate tried to take from them...
They would face it together.
Hand in hand.
As mates.
As lovers.
As family.
Somewhere beyond time...
The witch smiled toward the heavens.
"You see?" she whispered.
"Love was never in the mark."
"It was always in them."
Above the endless sea, the wind carried only one answer.
Sometimes, loving someone isn't letting them go.
Sometimes...
...it's choosing them, again and again, for the rest of your life.
