Chapter Text
“..So, what you’re saying there’s a chance that Mrs. Irene is the Director?” Spep confirms, bewildered at the sudden accusation.
Parrot corrects him. “Someone from the Paragon family, to be precise.”
“Are you going to let BAT know there’s a potential suspect among their team?”
“No. I want to see what she will do. Anyways, I need to call Jumper.” Parrot picks his phone up from the desk, scrolling through his contact list.
Spep cocks his head, curious. “What for?”
“I need her spies for something.”
—
Wifies walked alone, hand in pockets and his bag rested upon his shoulder. The sun had set a while ago, leaving a dark street with only several lamps to serve as a guiding light.
He turned left to an alley way, a short cut, but also the ideal place to get jumped. The films that Avery sometimes rope him into watching says it all. Alas, it’d save him time, and he’d rather not linger outside longer than necessary.
The shinigami trailed behind him like a guard dog, so maybe he’s not actually alone. Although, she’s as useful as a statue when it comes to protection. If he were to get attacked, she’d stand off to the side and simply watch.
Not that he planned on relying on his shinigami anyway. It takes away the fun of the challenge.
“Wifies, I have nothing against you, I think the notebook couldn’t have been picked up by anyone better. Even so, I’m not on either your side or P’s.” Dabria spoke as she caught up to float beside him.
Wifies nods. “I know. You’ve made that clear.”
“I won’t help you or them for that matter.. But there’s something that’s been bothering me for a while. I’m only saying this as your roommate."
He looks in her direction briefly, then interrogates her. “What’s wrong? What are you getting at?”
“I’m going to tell you this, not as an ally for the Director, but because it’s creeping me out.”
Wifies rolls his eyes. “Get to the point already.”
“Someone’s been following you all this time, and they have been for a while.”
Wifies stops. His eyes glanced over his shoulder, a figure shrouded in the dark, retreated into the shadows as an attempt to conceal their presence. Though the dim light allowed him to faintly see their face and silhouette briefly. A pair of long braids was their most distinct feature. He then continues walking, acting completely oblivious.
It’d be better if his stalker didn’t realise they were caught. Hopefully, they didn’t notice.
“It’s been getting on my nerves, and I have to stick with you until either you or the notebook is finished. I know for a fact they can’t see me but since I’m always hovering near you. It feels like I’m being watched too.”
“That is an issue. If it makes you feel better, I’ll have to get rid of them.”
How annoying.. This is likely P’s doing too. How did I already end up on the suspect list?! He thought, exasperated.
Dabria smiles. “Good.”
He walked through the alley way to a more lit up street. Wondering if it would force them to follow behind further to prevent being spotted.
Now, he had to get their name somehow, he rather not have someone watching his every move. It’d just be a pain. Although, there’s no need to act so hastily, to them, he should just look like an ordinary university student. He can be patient, then wait for the perfect time to strike.
“You know.. the deal is still on the table.” Dabria once again offers.
Wifies refuses immediately without even a second to think. “Save it. I can figure out their name without it.”
—
The door was locked behind Wifies, quickly kicking off his shoes, he immediately set off to closing every curtain in his line of sight.
Avery came downstairs upon hearing the commotion, his hand following the railing.
He smiles and greets him. “Welcome back! There’s leftover pizza in the fridge if you want some, I already had dinner.” The younger brother gestures to the kitchen.
He glances around, tensing at the lack of moonlight shining into the house. “I don’t think our neighbours are that nosy..”
Wifies shrugs. “You never know.”
Avery follows him into the kitchen, nervously fidgeting at the hem of his sleeves.
Wifies observed his behaviour for a moment, frowning. “More bullies?”
Killing more people at his school may just lead P to believe the Director is a student at Capital High, more specifically, the suspicion would be placed on Avery. Not really the person Wifies would want to frame.
Avery shakes his head. “No, it’s something else.”
“What is it then?”
“I don't know if it's just my imagination but I spotted someone following me. Every time I’d try to get a clear look at them, they’d hide.”
So, the entire family is on P’s suspect list? As long as they all act as they usually do, there’s no way his family would look like anything but ordinary. Even so, Wifies had to get rid of these stalkers, and fast.
“A stalker?” Wifies confirms, though he already knew the answer.
Avery nods. “I think so. I had the curtains open to see if I could see them from the window. Guess not, they’re pretty good at hiding.”
Wifies placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder. “It’d be better if we weren’t watched even more than we already are.”
He’d prefer if this stalker wouldn’t be able to get a glimpse of the Death Note through his window. Would not be ideal.
“I guess you’re right.”
—
“If I have six minutes and forty seconds to write the details of death, what happens if I write the cause first and then the name?” Wifies asked, turning to face the shinigami.
“I don’t know. I’ve never tried it.” Dabria shrugs, confused at the sudden question. Then, she grins. “Are you going to try it?”
Wifies opens his laptop, and begins to type something in his search engine. A few seconds later, a news website pops up.
“Hm, maybe.” He clicks on a column, the crime section to be exact. A list of names appear before him.
Dabria points to his screen. “What’s this?”
“A list of names of criminals, including pictures.”
People he could easily access the name of, but aren’t beloved enough to cause an uproar. No one would’ve bat an eye if Nufuli wasn’t so important.
“Convenient.” The shinigami affirms. She pauses for a moment. “Wait, why do they have that?”
“The leader of LAW, Lettuce introduced it. Something about exposing all scum and shaming them for their crimes to set an example.” He explains, clicking on a name.
“Your human system is weird..”
“I don’t really care. It works in my favour right now.” Wifies moves his mouse to highlight the name.
The picture shows a middle aged balding man, convicted of murder and robbery. A perfect sacrifice to use in his plan, no one would bother with this guy.
“With this book, I do wonder how much control I truly have over a person’s actions..” Wifies mused.
“You tell me. Shinigami are too lazy to write detailed instructions, let alone any.”
After picking the bait, he scrolled through his contact list on his phone.
“I didn’t realise you have friends.” Dabria comments.
He ignored the insult, he just simply preferred not being around absolute idiots. Thank you. Wifies found someone that he could tolerate, and began to text them.
Wifies: Hey, want to hangout tomorrow?
They respond instantly.
Kenadian: Sure, where are we going?
Wifies: The shopping centre. Meet me at the bus stop at 11am.
Kenadian: Ok
—
Wifies briefly peered over his shoulder as he made his way to his destination, spotting the familiar long braids. Good, I’m still being followed. Otherwise, what I’m about to do will be completely useless.
The investigator scribbles onto her notebook. He goes to school, then goes home. Occasionally, he’ll go out on a weekend. Normal behaviour for an honour student.
So far, he’s done nothing that points to him being the Director.. She thought.
He leaned against the wall of the bus stop, waiting for his friend to arrive. Taking his phone out of his pocket, he checked the time, 10:55am. Five more minutes then.
“What’s your plan?” Dabria inquired.
“Did you read what I wrote?” Wifies mumbles.
The shinigami scoffs. “No, it’d be boring that way. I don’t like spoilers.”
“Then watch and see.”
Shortly, Kenadian shows up. Right on time, in fact.
“Never thought I’d see the day when Wifies of all people ask to go out.” Ken teases.
“Hello to you too.” Wifies deadpans.
They made small talk, mundane things like how school is going or something interesting they saw recently. All surface level things, with no reason to go deeper.
The engine of the bus hummed with the abrupt stop, signaling its arrival. Wifies followed the crowd and led them to the back, just one seat in front to leave a space.
From the corner of his eye, he was able to glimpse the familiar long braided hair. Perfect.
Ken turned to him. “Is there anything specific you need to buy?”
“Some stationary.” Wifies absentmindedly answered. Two more minutes.
“Now that I think about it, I do need a new pack of highlighters.”
A man stumbled onto the bus, a scowl hung onto his face as he fidgeted with the inner parts of his coat, seemingly trying to take something out.
He was finally able to reveal what he had hidden, a pistol. Immediately, he aimed it at the driver.
“I’m taking control of this bus!” The man announced.
Passengers on the bus began to duck, cover their heads with their hands, and loved ones huddled closer. No one wanted to die like this, especially not alone.
“Keep driving!”
“When he gets closer, I’ll try to wrestle the gun out of his hands.” Wifies whispered, but just loud enough that the passenger behind them could hear.
Ken argued back. “I don’t think–”
The stalker interrupts. “That’s too reckless, I’ll deal with him.”
Wifies turned around. “How can I know I can trust you? You could be his accomplice for all I know.” He interrogates, an accusatory glint in his eyes.
His friend agreed with his reasoning. “Yeah. It always goes like this: one person takes control of the bus while their accomplice observes and pretends to be oblivious.”
The stalker’s expression turned apprehensive, she glanced briefly at the hijacker then back to the people questioning her.
She seems to relent and hands over a card to Wifies. “Here’s my id, it should prove my identity to you.”
Zoe Flora. A BAT member, or to be exact, a member of Jumper Who’s espionage team.
BAT spies.. So, that’s who P sent. Wifies thought.
He hands the id card back over to its owner. “I trust you, do you have a gun?”
Zoe nods. “You can leave your safety to me.”
The man got closer to the back, he waved his gun around as an attempt to intimidate passengers. It’s mostly effective.
Wifies fumbled with his pocket, accidentally causing a scrap piece of paper to fall out. He tries to pick it up discreetly, only for the hijacker to notice.
He grabs the paper. “Don’t try to conspire against me. I’ll shoot you all.”
The man skim read it silently. “Tch, just a shopping list. Useless.”
He scrunches it up into a ball and throws the paper onto the ground again. Wifies attempts to pick it up again, this time, successfully.
Suddenly, the hijacker screamed. Dabria, who was silently watching this whole fiasco, cocks her head in confusion.
He falls to the ground and lands on his butt, frantically trying to scramble away. "Get away from me you monster!”
The shinigami points a finger to herself. “You mean me? You can see me?”
“He must’ve dropped a piece of the Death Note, that’s pretty smart, Wifies.” She thinks aloud.
The man aims his gun at her, firing away all his bullets in quick succession. Passengers immediately duck again, hiding behind the seats to not get hit.
“Stop the bus! Stop the bus!” He begged.
The bus driver complied, ramming the brakes to force an abrupt halt.
“Open the door! Let me out!”
Nervously, the bus driver gave the hijacker a way out. He ran out in a panic as soon as there was an opening, stumbling and falling out.
In recklessness, he didn’t pay attention to his surroundings. As soon as he left, a speeding car hit him with a force that was impossible for anyone to survive. The man now lay dead on the side of the road.
Wifies checked his phone. 10:45am. Right on time, just as he specified.
“Sorry, I don’t know if I still want to go out after seeing this..” Ken sheepishly admits, apologising for the sudden bail on plans.
Wifies nods. “I understand.”
One by one, the passengers exited the bus. A crying child desperately clung onto their parents, each step they took was wobbly as their guardians did their best to comfort them.
Zoe tapped him on the shoulder, she spoke in a hushed voice. “Truth be told, I’m on a secret mission. I’d greatly appreciate it if you didn’t let anyone know about me.”
“Of course.” Wifies promised. “I won’t let anyone know, including my mother.”
Great success, now, he knew the identity of his stalker. Next step, how to get rid of her.
The investigator left the scene as soon as she saw the arrival of the police.
It’s not Wifies. I’m sure of it. She thought to herself. If it was him, he would’ve just killed the hijacker immediately.
—
The scene was cleared, Wifies took the opportunity to just head home since his commitment had now been cancelled. Works for him, he didn’t actually want to go out anyway.
Guess traumatising someone is the way to go if he ever wanted to opt out of something.
“Are you going to kill her? You know her name now.” Dabria asked, though it was more of a suggestion.
“No. Not yet, it’s too soon. It’ll just tell P that it’s me.” Wifies replied.
“Right, right.. You have that thing going on with P.”
“A game in which I intend to win.” He nodded while crossing his arms, affirming his statement.
“Besides, I doubt this is the only spy P had sent. I need to eliminate every single one to avoid suspicion.”
Wifies smiled. You’re next, Zoe Flora
—
The next time he saw his investigator was at a park. There, Wifies set his new plan into motion.
He wore a scarf, had it high enough that it concealed the lower half of his face. With the changing seasons, and the weather becoming colder, it wasn’t out of the ordinary at all. No one batted an eye.
Zoe walked peacefully, she had finished the mission assigned to her. Tomorrow, she’ll head back to headquarters and report her findings to Jumper. They have the wrong person.
Suddenly, she heard footsteps. She stopped in her tracks and was just about to turn around—
Wifies held his scarf up higher, voice slightly muffled. “Don’t turn around or I’ll kill you and everyone you love. I’m the Director.”
For good measure, he also pulled his hood up. He can’t risk being recognised.
Zoe faced forward once again. “..How do I know you’re not lying?”
“See that person over there?” He couldn’t point but it shouldn’t be too hard to figure out who he was talking about.
She glanced around for a second, though quickly figured out who the Director was referring to.
“I see them.” Zoe nervously nodded.
“I’m going to kill them. In three..”
The Director begins to count down. They collapse once the number hits zero, presumably dead from a heart attack.
“Do you believe me now?” He coldly asked.
“Y-yes. I believe you.” She silently pleaded to him to not kill anyone else.
An envelope was thrown onto the ground. “Pick it up, open it and follow the instructions.”
Zoe picks the envelope up, tearing it open.
“Good, I’ll be watching you. Do not go against me or I’ll kill you.” He warned, emphasising the word ‘kill’.
Wifies walked away, finding a spot to hide. Far enough where she wouldn’t see him, but close enough where he would see her.
What the fuck have I gotten myself into.. She thought.
The envelope presented her with a piece of paper, written with a set of steps. These are probably the instructions she needs to follow. All typed out and printed, with no handwriting she could trace.
It read:
“Follow these instructions closely. I’m sure you know the consequences if you don’t.
Go to the picnic table, then take the other paper out. The one with boxes. Write the full names of every spy sent out to investigate potential suspects of the Director. If you don’t know their names, use whatever means necessary to find out. After you finish, get up and leave the envelope behind.”
She finds the other paper, the one with boxes as stated. Scrambling in her pockets, she was able to procure a pen. Although, there seemed to be one in that envelope just in case.
The Director didn’t want to leave her with any excuse, she supposed.
Zoe gripped the pen in her hand, yet she didn’t begin writing. She hesitated, wondering what these names were for. If she was about to sign the death warrant of her colleagues.
Yet, she didn’t want her loved ones to die either. Her family, Reina…
With shaky hands, her pen wrote out each name. Condemning them to the gallows with the Director as their executioner. Four spies were sent out, including her. Now, three will soon meet their end. However, a thought suddenly occurred to her.
The Director needs the names of people. Is that a condition needed for them to kill? As long as they didn’t know the name of someone, are they unable to kill? Crucial information, if only she could pass this on…
With one hand, she rummaged through her pockets for her notepad, eyes trained firmly on the paper in front of her, while her other hand held the pen.
On the chance the Director ends up killing her regardless of what she does, Zoe won’t let her, or anyone else’s death be in vain. One way or another, that new clue is getting to P.
Zoe ripped a page out from the notepad and quickly scribbled on a message. It read:
“The Director needs names in order to kill. They knew my name. I’m sorry.”
She stuffs it back into her pocket, hoping the Director didn’t notice. Even if she dies, at least she got something out of it.
Wifies watched Zoe get up, not taking the envelope with her. Perfect. He waited briefly before finally signing her name off.
He walked over to casually swipe the envelope off the table, Zoe turned around, clutching her chest. Her eyes met The Director’s blank expression.
“Wifies.. I should’ve known..” She rasped out before losing consciousness and collapsing onto the ground, breathing her last.
Luckily the park wasn’t crowded, barely anyone was there. Wifies left the scene, hiding the envelope in his coat.
Checkmate.
—
Once Wifies was home, he opened the envelope again. Sure enough, Zoe wrote all of their names down.
Three names written, four spies sent in total. One for each family member, it makes sense.
“Are you going to write those names down?”
“No need. Zoe already did it for me.”
Dabria paused for a moment, thinking. Then, a bulb lit up. “You made her write on a page of the Death Note. Bold move.”
Wifies opened up the paper Zoe wrote on, revealing that he had a page of the Death Note encased inside another envelope. He cut holes in that envelope, instructing Zoe to write in those boxes. Ensuring that she would write in the correct spot, and also saving himself time.
Each name had a different time next to them, each person lined up on death row awaiting their execution.
“I wrote details of their deaths beforehand, now, every spy should die at different intervals.” Wifies explained. All too proud of himself.
Should I tell him that Zoe wrote a note before she died? Dabria thought. No, it’s probably funnier if he didn’t know..
