Chapter Text

<Wednesday’s POV>

As she seated herself upon the boulder, she felt a strange sense of unease. Nervousness.

Is this real? Just something my mind concocted in lieu of sleep? Or is Enid really my soulmate? She nearly shuddered.

“So, Wednesday, what are your hobbies?” Enid enquired, snapping her out of her thoughts.

Wednesday took a moment to prepare herself for the oncoming interrogation. “Playing the cello, reading, writing, gravedigging, dissection, and investigation,” She replied.

“Ok, so we both have music and writing in common!” Enid exclaimed. She seemed excited. “I like K-pop and blogging.”

“I despise K-pop.”

“Oh…” Enid fumbled for what to say next, “Do you have any siblings?”

“I have a brother.”

“So we both have brothers!”

“Most of the population has a sibling, as nuclear families are quite common as of late.”

“Um… what’s your brother’s name?”

She could tell that Enid was struggling to maintain their conversation.

“His name is Pugsley, and your brothers?”

“Well, I have fi—” Enid’s voice caught. “Four brothers. Chris, Connor, Brad, and Jake. Connor, Chris, and Brad are triplets.”

She was about to say five…

They sat in an uncomfortable silence for an awkward moment. Enid broke the aforementioned silence with, “Listen, at first, I had the same thought as you.”

“What thought?”

“That… maybe this was a mistake. This won’t… how will this work? But then I thought, Fate doesn’t make mistakes, right? Maybe this is a ying-yang situation, and opposites-attract sort of—” Enid paused, realising what she just said, and her face flushed. Wednesday herself fought valiantly against blushing, and failed succeeded, of course.

“What I’m trying to say is, maybe we should give this a chance? Just get to know each other?” Enid tried.

Wednesday considered this. Enid is my soulmate. I will be forced to see her every unconscious moment for the next five years, so it would be in my best interest to make a good impression.

“Fine.”

<Enid’s  POV>

Enid chatted idly with Wednesday, but her mind was elsewhere.

So this is my soulmate…

“So, Wednesday, what school do you go to?”

“I used to go to a private school, but I was recently expelled for arson. How about you?”

“Well, I go to a public school here in San Francisco. Do you, like, have a criminal record?”

“Ridiculous, I wouldn’t be so sloppy as to leave behind evidence.”

“Oh!”

Well shit. Of course she’s insane.

She had to find some other topic to talk about… but what? Quick, think… She glanced around the area for a moment, and noticed a woods about a hundred yards away.

“Wednesday, do you want to check out this area? Like just roam around?”

“I don’t see why not.”

They walked towards the woods, which were barely visible at the horizon.

“You walk so fast!” Enid exclaimed.

“Maybe you just walk slowly,” Wednesday muttered, but she slowed down a bit.

They walked in a somewhat comfortable silence for about ten seconds before Enid started to speak yet again.

“Listen, Wednesday, there are some things I’ve got to tell you, and it would get weird if I didn’t…

“I’m a werewolf. My whole pack is. And I hope that’s okay wi—”

“I don’t mind werewolves, Enid.”

“Wait, what? You aren’t an Outcast-hating Normie?”

“My family is quite diverse, I have plenty of canine relatives. My parents, brother, and I are all Outcasts as well.”

“That’s cool! What are your abilities?”

“My mother is a Psychic, my father doesn’t have powers, and my brother and I haven’t developed ours yet, so ours are unknown thus far.”

She’s actually pretty chill …

They were nearing the edge of the woods. Enid spotted a hollow tree trunk covered in moss a few yards within the threshold. That trunk looks exactly like the one in the woods near the house…

A twig snapped as Enid stepped on it. That scent… this is the woods near the house!

“Wednesday, I know this place!”

“Intrigueing,” Wednesday responded.

“No, I’m serious! This is the woods near my house! I never knew there was a field right next to it…”

“So your house is in the area? That would mean these dreams are set in real-world places, and judging by the fact that it’s night, they are in real-time, as well…”

A splash resounded as Enid stepped in one of the small streams. There was a creek further ahead, she knew.

She’s a starer, I haven’t seen her blink once…

Enid didn’t like the fact that she was picking up so much about Wednesday. What would Mom say? She would be pissed…

Enid hoped she wouldn’t be the one to remember the dreams. Her mother would poke and prod until Enid told her anything, and would berate her and probably repeat history… .

But she didn’t want to dwell on what was obviously going to happen; this was her first soulmate dream! She didn’t want to ruin her first impression, of course.

“Yeah, it should be just up ahead,” Enid replied a fraction of a second too late.

She stepped on a twig, snapping it in her stride, “So where do you live?”

“New Jersey, around the outskirts.”

“Ooh, how’s the weather there right now?”

“The autumn weather is enjoyable, how about San Francisco?"

How does she know—wait, I told her…

“It’s a bit warm, but that doesn’t matter much, since winter’s coming soon enoug—” Enid’s eyes widened in shock;

“Wednesday, not to alarm you, but I think you’re dissolving…”

Wednesday looked down, “It seems I am, but I suppose I’m merely waking up.”

That makes more sense…

“You look like you’re being Thanos-snapped,” Enid joked.

“Thanos-snapped?” Wednesday asked.

“Don’t tell me you haven’t watched Infinity War?” Enid exclaimed.

Wednesday couldn’t reply because she’d fully disintegrated.

<Wednesday’s POV>

The first thing Wednesday did when she woke up was to check her arm, and was greeted by a blue box with a black outline, and a green line beneath.

I suppose Enid really is my soulmate… And then it hit her like a freight train; she’d had her first soulmate dream, and she remembers it.

Am I supposed to be able to hear what you’re thinking?

Enid?

The one and only… can you hear what I’m thinking too?
Unless you weren’t speaking just then, no. I suppose this happens so that whoever’s awake doesn’t seem insane.

Makes sense, yeah.

Can you see me?

No, I can't.

Wednesday had known that they could converse this way, but hadn’t known what to expect; she’d avoided learning much about soulmates because she’d hated the mere concept. Now, she was living through it with no preparation. Enid however, seemed unfazed.

Ok, I can’t believe you haven’t watched Infinity War! Have you watched anything from the MCU?

No, I barely know what that is…

Oh my god. Please do, it would be soooo worth it!

I might, but I don’t have a phone. Or a modern television. Or Wi-Fi.

What?! Why not?

I refuse to fall into the soul-sucking grasp of modern media.

Touché. But I’ll definitely find a way to watch at least Infinity War during the dreams, so you better be prepared.

And how would you do that?

I read somewhere that you can like, make stuff appear during the dreams, but they don’t appear in the real location. It’s a bit weird, but cool!

I see.

Wednesday moved towards her room’s door; she’d gone to bed fully dressed, exhausted, admittedly, since Uncle Fester (who had been visiting for her birthday) and her had gone grave-digging the night before.

Yeah, I think I’m waking up now—holy shit, you live in a mansion?

It's ancestral, but yes.

So your family’s like, old money?

I suppose.

I’m nearly awake—

And you must be completely awake now.

Wednesday breathed a sigh of relief as she received no reply; Enid was gone, for now. But tonight, and every night henceforth, she’d be there, waiting, or perhaps Wednesday herself would wait.

Only time will tell.

Notes:

i know i said this is slowburn but i just can’t help it, they’re destined for it… so i guess semi-slowburn? Medium burn??

Writing ‘yards’ instead of ‘metres’ hurts my soul, but the characters are American so I have to write in American English, I guess… but ONLY WORDS AND SPEECH! No way i'd put in the effort to change the way i spell, knowing me, it'd affect the way i write outside this fic, too...

The next chapter will be longer, because i have an idea of what to write for ch 4 (never before seen in the og version, because that version sucked), but will also take a whilee because i have semifinals until september 25th

Notes:

ofc i kept the iconic intro to my shitty version of this fic! That was the only tolerable part of it <3
https://www.tumblr.com/not-so-instant-fic-machine/823634641695195136/ok-i-finally-got-it-saved-as-a-draft-now-i-can my reblog rant about the summary, which has the better og versions

And yes, the part where Wednesday says she was born on a Friday and Enid says she was born on a Wednesday is ACCURATE, i did my research, October 13th 2006 (aka 13 years before the fic, which is set in 2019, because Wednesday goes to Nevermore right before she turns 16 and the show is set in 2022, and they’re both 13 in the beginning of the fic) is a Friday, and June 28th 2006 is a Wednesday!
I also did some other research and apparently New Jersey is 3 hours ahead of San Fransisco?? So let's just pretend Wednesday was going to sleep at like 2 am? That's healthy enough ig let's pretend she couldn’t sleep or smth…
the things i do for this fic... (i hate maths but i genuinely locked in and did some for this fic)

Yell at me on tumblr, i made a sub-blog for writing; @/not-so-instant-fic-machine
I won’t be online much, but still, UPDATES AND STUFF!
