would you love me?..

Chapter 2

Summary:

Unplanned second chapter because I kinda fell sick and channeling my experience into my favorite Cajun boy helps. Sorry, Remy, we're whumping now.

Chapter Text

Thing is, Remy didn't get sick very easy. When he did, it was usually something terrible, like some kind of mutant-killing disease spread out by FoH back in the day, or that time he got tetanus when Jean-Luc just adopted him and he didn't have any vaccines yet. And when he did get sick, he'd power through it until he was physically unable to.

Well, this was the norm. His body was used to extreme stress.

But it seemed like it was done with it.

Remy knew something was off when he felt it was slightly harder to breathe through his nose. He blamed it on the cold morning and went on with his day.

But it didn't go away. Slowly, he felt his throat getting scratchy too. So he made himself some soothing tea and continued to push through it without giving it much thought.

That was two days ago.

And this morning he could barely open his eyes.

His bones ached. Literal bones. He felt his jaws and teeth and skull and he hated it and the pressure behind his forehead.

Remy groaned, trying to sit up in the bed, and the cool air of the room licked at his skin, making him shiver. He groaned again, feeling his headache get worse.

"Sugah?" Rogue called out, voice groggy, from her side of the bed as she blinked herself awake and looked at him. "Y'alright?"

Remy nodded, but the sound of his breathing was giving him away.

"You sick?" Anna Marie perked up instantly, concern in her eyes as she sat up and caught his face in her hands.

"Nothin' t'worry 'bout," Remy slurred somehow but Rogue was already checking his temperature with the back of her hand and looking him up and down.

"Babe, you're pale," Rogue told him worryingly. "Stay here. I'll go get you somethin' to eat and drink."

"Anna, I'm alright," Remy pulled back, trying to ignore how the movement made his headache pound even worse than before and how his limbs felt like they were filled with lead.

"You sure don't look alright," Rogue furrowed her brows on him.

Gambit was right about to answer when he was interrupted by a loud, messy sneeze. He didn't expect it and barely had time to cover his nose and mouth with his hand that was now covered in snot. Remy groaned in disgust, looking at the mess covering his palm.

"That's it," Anna Marie said, reaching into the nightstand for a tissue. "You stay in bed today."

"Chère..."

"Don't chère me, Remy!" Rogue huffed, giving him a tissue and getting up. "You stay put. Ah'm tellin' the others you're not doing anythin' today."

As Remy wiped up the mess from his hand, he looked at his wife, exasperated.

"I just need somethin' to eat and get some medicine is all," he told her, swinging his legs off the bed to follow her. "Ain't no need t'fuss-"

That's when he tried to stood up and instantly swayed, nearly tripping over the nightstand before sitting right back on the bed.

His brain wasn't working properly. Damn it. He had plans today, too... They had plans, to spend some time together and...

"Merde," Remy said, hunching and trying to breathe. Rogue appeared in front of him, giving him another tissue to blow his nose. She lowered next to him, rubbing soothing circles into his back.

After a little while, as he was able to breathe again, Gambit sighed and climbed back under the covers.

"Guess it ain't dat bad an idea..." he mumbled and heard Rogue scoff a laugh.

"You say my ideas usually bad?" she teased, no bite in her words as she tucked him in better.

"Never," Remy sighed, his eyes closing. Damn it. He hated being sick.

***

When Remy opened his eyes some time later, he knew three things.

First, he could breathe, however short-lived that would be.

Second, the sun was already high up but hidden behind the curtains.

And third, he really wanted to see and hold his wife and tell her he loved her. For no apparent reason.

Remy let out a soft sound, shifting, and a familiar voice rang in the room, instantly soothing the ache his pounding in his head.

Rogue was by his side in an instant, sitting on the other side of the room by a lamp, reading, before that, and brushed his hair out of his face.

"Easy, sugah," she cooed, and Remy dropped back unto the mattress.

"Mon amour..." he mumbled and Anna Marie smiled, carding her fingers through his hair.

"Right here, love. You feelin' any better?"

He wanted to say something cheeky, but the words came out much more sincere than he hoped.

"Am with you..."

Rogue let out a soft "aww" and pressed a kiss to his forehead.

"Guess you need some more rest, Cajun. Here, take this first."

She reached to their nightstand and picked up a piece of toast that totally wasn't there before he'd fallen asleep. Did she bring him breakfast?

Remy took the bread and nibbled at it until the whole piece disappeared. Rogue brushed the crumbs away from the bedding, not even caring about the mess. Then Remy sniffled again and a box of tissues helpfully appeared by his side.

"Merci," he mumbled and blew his nose. Rogue sighed softly, brushing his hair away again.

"Where did you even catch that bug?" she murmured, not exactly expecting the answer, but Gambit still gave her one.

"Think dis just my body tellin' me t'calm de fuck down," he said, voice tired. "Last few weeks been a bit hectic."

"Ain't that the truth," Rogue chuckled, looking at her husband with fondness and concern mixed together. "Let's just make sure you really rest, okay?"

"Head hurt," Remy mumbled, scowling. "Don't think I can sleep..."

Rogue pulled the blanket higher up to cover his shoulders.

"You don't get out of the bed, ya hear me?" she told him, narrowing her eyes on him, and Remy just snuggled into the blankets, not having energy even for a teasing reply. That alone was a mark of how exhausted he was.

For a minute, Rogue was gone. When she returned, she had a steaming mug in her hands, the liquid smelling somewhat citrus-y.

"What dis?" Remy asked, blinking and carefully pulling himself out of the blanket coccoon.

"Medicine," Rogue answered, sitting by his side again and helping him to take the first sip. "Should help you with all that."

Gambit was careful at first, but when he felt that it wasn't burningly hot he downed the mug in one go before giving it back to his wife.

"Go back to sleep now," she said, pressing another kiss to his messy hair. Remy hummed in response, and looked up.

Bon Dieu, his wife was beautiful. And kind. And she took care of his sorry ass when his body was betraying him.

"J'taime," Remy murmured, feeling his eyelids already getting heavy. He wished he could just stay awake and watch her instead.

Anna Marie smiled softly at him.

"Love you too, Remy," she said. "Rest. Ah'll be right here when you wake up. You know that."

He did. She always would find her way back to him. She promised him that, back when they stood in front of their closest friends during an impropmtu ceremony of the stolen wedding. He's never been happier.

Instead of answering, Remy reached for her hand, his movements a little sluggish, and pulled it to his face, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.

Next minute, he was asleep again.

Notes:

Had a dialogue pop into my head, wrote it in my phone notes and decided "Fuck it" and published it lol
