Chapter Text

“It’s so hot!”

For a second, Jamil thinks about telling Kalim to get off him if he feels this way. It is, after all, too hot for them to stick so close to each other – the weather fairies are once again being mischievous and tampered with the dorm’s weather by pushing the thermostat to the max. Most of the day has been spent inside but even staying in the shadows can only get you so far when it’s as hot as a volcano. Kalim sometimes sits up to wave his Magical Pen above his head and fine droplets of fresh water shower everyone in the lounge room. Usually, Jamil’d scold him for splashing water everywhere inside, but, in this case, it dries off so quickly that it doesn’t matter – that and everyone needs it.

And, despite the heat, Kalim is wrapped around him, his head rubbing against Jamil’s chest like a spoiled cat. His right hand is playing with the hem of Jamil’s tank top, stretching it as he hums a song Jamil recognizes as being quite trendy on MagiCam right now. Even for people used to the Scalding Sands weather like them, it’s too much to bear though.

“Jamil, aren’t you too hot?”

“I am.” He doesn’t hesitate to add, “because of you.”

“How about we make popsicles for everyone? I’ll use Oasis Maker and you can put syrup or something in to make it tasty!”

“Fine. If you can get up.”

“Ugh… I’ll try!”

With a spell, the mix of sugary water should freeze in only a few seconds and distributing the resulting popsicle to the dorm students should help them bear the heat a little more. That’s not a bad idea, and even one Jamil thought about in the morning, but he’d been so busy with organizing the lounge so it could be cooler that he’d decided on doing it later. If Kalim hadn’t proposed it, he would have. But it isn’t so bad to see Kalim manage to think of a good idea by himself, without being pushed into it.

Getting up and walking to the kitchen is enough for sweat to roll down their faces and bodies despite the short distance. Kalim sighs in delight when he slumps on a chair as soon as they step inside. Jamil resists the urge to do the same because one of them has to be responsible here and takes out unused popsicle molds that a few of the third years bought earlier this month.

After pouring mint syrup in a pitcher, he hands it to Kalim who obediently uses his Unique Magic to fill it – he’s become better at using it recently, able to control it almost perfectly. Once the liquid is in the molds, Jamil whispers a few words to freeze them and the popsicles are finished. The first one is given to Kalim who bites into it with delight before he turns to Jamil with an inviting smile.

The kiss they share afterward is awfully refreshing.
