Chapter 5
🟨 Love 🟨
Jax sat there in the sand, seeing the moon reflected in the water. The silence being his only company, until...
“Love is a beautiful thing, you know?"
He closed his eyes, groaning. He recognises that voice, The Moon.
"You know, Jax, I've been seeing you, all of you, for quite some time. You humans can be so… fascinating.” she spoke softly, with a hint of admiration.
He tsked, he hated talking to Caine's NPCs, but for some reason, there's something about this one that makes… her… special. Perhaps it's the fact of how long she's been here. It's worth a shot, I guess.
He looked up, and she smiled, “I've seen people fall in love before, a feeling you could say I can relate to. Even something as simple as a friendship can be so beautiful, like you with Pomni.”
Jax scoffed, laying his arms on his knees, "Yeah, up until I ruined it.” he grumbled in a low voice, somehow she heard him.
The Moon hummed, "I don't think you ruined it. Right now, you have a choice to make, a choice that will change everything.”
He groaned, faceplanting his arms, "Great, my favorite!" he looked up when she chuckled.
“I hope you work things out. Don't tell anyone, but you two are my favorite!” she winked and let out another chuckle when Jax blushed, looking to the side, “Good night, Jax.” and with that, her face faded away, leaving a faceless moon.
Jax sighed after that, listening to the ambience around him. It may be digital, but it still sounds real. After some minutes, he heard footsteps, and he immediately recognised them. Pomni.
She heard her sniff, "Jax…?" her voice was small, wavering. I made her cry…
It took a lot of inner strength to turn and look at her, her face was stained, her natural mascara running. You did that. Fix it. He looked in front of him again.
She walked to him, standing beside him, they were at eye level. “Wh- What happened…?” He still wouldn't look at her, “Did I do something wrong…?” that made him turn. She looked hurt, broken.
He slowly raised a hand, expecting her to pull away, but that never happened. He held her cheek, wiping out her tears, she leaned into his touch, closing her eyes. A few tears fell after that, as she let out a small sob.
“I-I… I'm sorry…” he looked away, ashamed, "I panicked, and I did what I always do, run away. Like a coward…" his ears dropped. “Pomni, I'm a huge mess, I'm bad at this whole… relationship thing.”
She chuckled sadly, holding the hand that was still on her cheek, “Yeah, I could tell. Not that I'm any better." she enlaced her fingers with his. "I…I was trying to tell you something, before…” She mumbled looking away.
Jax tensed, his pupils being small pinpricks, “Yeah, I… heard some of it…” they looked at eachother.
"You do know what I was trying to tell you, right?” she smiled sadly, and he returned it.
"Kinda, but I was too busy realizing something…" he was now holding both her cheeks.
“Jax…?” she breathed out.
"But,” he cut her off, "I just… Pomni," he had a determined look on his face. “Look, ever since I met you, you automatically caught my attention. Even when I tried to push you away, you always fought back, you never believed my lies, you… you're amazing PomPom…” he looked at her as if she hung the stars. "But that's why I'm afraid, afraid of… hurting you…"
She finally talked, holding his hands firmly, “How would you hurt me? I'm not that gullible Jax, you of all people know that," she had a smug look, contrasting with her previous expression. “why are you afraid, really?"
He looked down, his voice low and defeated, “It's wrong…”
"Why would it be wrong?" she questioned back.
“I'm a jerk…”
She shook her head, “Not as much as you think, you can be so kind, especially with me…” she had such a sweet look on her face.
He grew desperate, trying to think about a reason to stop this, all because of that small part that hated himself, that refused to receive anything good in his life. “The others-"
She cut him off, “I don't care!" she snapped, but her voice had no anger.
He looked at her, shocked, confused, mesmerized.
Pomni took a deep breath, it's time. She held his face, and looked at him with a beautiful smile, “Jax, I love you! You for being you. I love you despite your flaws, I even love some of your flaws! And don't think I'm perfect or anything, I'm flawed too, and despite that, you were the friend I always wanted. You're my best friend Bun!” her hands started shaking, “But, deep down, that title didn't sit right with me. Because, deep down, I wanted more." she sniffed, her voice trembling, “But if you don't want that with me, I-" she made a sound that could have been a sob. “I'll understand, but if you are ever ready, I'll be there, as always." She gave him the most convincing smile she could muster.
They had a few seconds of silence, except for Pomni's uneven breaths.
That was until Jax placed his hands on her waist, "Pom?” when she looked at him, he continued, “Remember what I told you? Back in the restaurant?” she gave him a small nod. “I wanted to do things right, be better, for you. But there was something I forgot to tell you." She tilted her head, and he smiled, "I want to make you happy, the happiest you've ever been, because, even in a hell like this, especially here, you deserve it. I want the best for you Pom.” He took a deep breath, and changed his position. He was still at eye level, but he was now kneeling in front of her, holding her hand with the both of his, "I want you Pomni. I want to be part of your life. I… I love you, PomPom."
She had no chance to respond because he closed the gap between them, kissing her passionately. She kissed back, holding him tight. He eventually pulled away, looking at her with a kind, yet smug smirk. Typical.
She couldn't believe it, she wanted to feel happy but- “Is this real?" she couldn't help but whisper in disbelief.
"I'm as real as it gets, hun!” He can't help himself.
A big smile formed on Pomni's face, she laughed breathlessly, lunging at him. She hooked her arms around his neck and laughed with tears in her eyes. She can't believe it! It's true! He loves her! He feels the same!
Jax started laughing too. Holding her firmly, he stood up and started spinning her.
They were both laughing idiots, together. Finally together!
She's so happy she could cry, in fact, she is crying.
She can't believe in a hell like this she can have this! But she stopped questioning a long time ago. She found her person, he found his. They found eachother!
After a while Jax stopped, they held eachother, softly chuckling.
Jax couldn't believe it himself, but he was done denying it. He loved her, she loved him. Despite everything, they love eachother.
Pomni hummed contently, placing her hands on his chest, “I'm so happy Jax. Thank you."
He tightened his hold on her, “Nah, thank you. You don't deserve being in a place like this, but I'm happy to have met you."
She chuckled and looked up at him, “If this is what it takes, I’d do it all again. It's worth it just to get to know you.”
This woman… he laughed and started walking to the tent, “You're crazy Pompuff."
She rested her head on his chest, humming, “I'm crazy for you Jay."
He snorted, but didn't say anything.
They made their way to the rooms with a content silence, Jax finally talked, “Wanna sleep together?" she gave him an incredulous look, he rolled his eyes, "Ok, ok, let's go to mine.”
They sat on the bed, and Pomni looked as Jax was rummaging between his drawers, "What are you doing Bun?”
He pulled out his camera, "You said memories are important to hold onto, so I'm making new ones!” he sat beside her, wrapping her with one arm, raising the camera with the other.
Pomni understood, and went to kiss him, she heard a ‘click’ sound, and opening her eyes she saw the picture that came out.
They were kissing, eyes closed, content, complete.
Jax placed the picture on his wall, looking at the others, particularly the one with him, Kaufmo and Ribbit. He sighed sadly. Pomni placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I bet they would be happy for your improvement.” She looked at him with pride and love. He's still unsure if he deserves it, but he will try his hardest to earn it. For her, for himself.
He smiled, hugging her and taking her down on the bed, now they were both laying down, completely attached, "They would've loved you.” he whispered.
She tightened her hold on him, "I'm sure of that.”
They spent the rest of the night like that, whispering sweet nothings to eachother, and sharing kisses, until sleep finally claimed them.

The next few days were… interesting, to say the least…
Two days after they became a couple, they made it public. Gangle and Ragatha of course dragged her away from everyone and questioned every minute detail. At the end Gangle was shrieking to the point a glass would've cracked, and Ragatha was beaming as much as the sun itself.
Jax, on the other hand, was being teased to death by Zooble, because he ‘found his soft spot’. Kinger was looking at him with a proud look, although no one was sure if he was quite there.
That same day Caine went crazy and made a love-themed adventure, sappy as hell, but everyone had fun, so who cares.
Pomni admits that that night, that date, wasn't perfect, but she doesn't care. In her eyes, that night was all she could've asked for, it was perfect for them, and that's what matters. They've been closer than ever. And Jax, step by step, started working things out with the others.
Some nights, when they walk on the beach, since it became a special place for them, the Moon would give them a knowing look, but it seemed more focused on Jax, he never commented on it, but she may ask him one day what that is about.
Another place they spend their time, like right now, is at the opera stage, here, there are a bunch of instruments and different stuff to perform. This is where he showed her his piano skills.
Pomni took her place on top of the piano, looking at her lover as he played the first notes, and she recognised it immediately. A few days after the Lighting Round adventure, they sang together to bother Zooble, and ever since then music became an important part of them.
But now, this song, has a different meaning. Now, this song feels like their own. Now, he's dedicating it, to her.
He noticed her recognition, so, with a smirk, he sang, “Daisy~, Daisy~!”
She joined him, “Give me your answer do~!"
"I'm half crazy~!” they swayed their heads to the rhythm of the song.
“All for the love of you~!" they looked at eachother lovingly.
"It won't be a stylish marriage~!" he winked at her, making her blush, "I can't afford a carriage~!"
They started inching their faces closer, until their lips were almost brushing, "But you'll look sweet, upon the seat, of a bicycle built for two~!” they closed the gap, sharing a sweet kiss. Jax played the final notes as they pulled away.
Pomni sat beside him, resting on his side, sighing happily, “I love you.” she whispered to him.
He nuzzled her head, holding her close, "Love ya too.”
There were many bumps on the way, but they would do it all again if it meant they get to know and love eachother. After years of being lost, feeling empty. They found eachother, they complete eachother.
They finally found love. True Love.
