Chapter Text
“And how long did they say he was unconscious?” My mother's hand squeezed lightly on my shoulder.
“Only a few moments.” Answered the quirk counselor, a tall and thin woman with silver hair (and I mean that literally, her hair was made out of the shiny metal) “It’s not a common reaction to a quirk emerging, but it's far from unheard of. And It sounds like he came around once the creature started licking his face-”
“Eevee.”
Both of them gave me a confused look- or perhaps it was also concern, since it was the first thing I'd said since I had been roused.
“What was that sweetheart?” My mom asked.
‘Is she *my* mom though? She's Alexander’s mom, but… I'm not just Alexander anymore either, am I?’
“Eevee.” I repeated, slightly louder. “That's the sound he made, so that's what I'm calling him.”
“Eevee!” Said ‘creature’ agreed happily, actually nodding too as his tail wagged.
“How do you know it's a him?” She asked, glancing between us.
‘Cause the tail doesn't have the heart pattern.’ I thought. “I don't know, I just do.” I said aloud with a shrug, trying to sound matter-of-fact like the child I now was… or had already been?
“‘Vee.” He nuzzled my free hand, and I absently began petting him, running my fingers down his neck and back.
My other hand was still tightly gripping his Pokeball.
I was still more than a bit freaked out by the situation, but it was impossible to not be soothed by the adorableness of the Pokemon.
‘And I don't know how I'm gonna be able to get away with calling them that… young-me has never heard of them. And Eevee was almost as much of a mascot as Pikachu or the other starters, so someone should have recognized him by now if they were going to.’
Fainting had actually been kinda helpful, in terms of helping my second set of memories to settle in. Some of them- most of them actually- were still vague and unhelpful, but it was enough to get the gist.
I didn't know how or why, but I now had some of the memories of a person from an entirely different universe. Not all of them, and some fragments didn't make sense.
‘Like the idea of All Might being a teacher, I don't get that… or how Izuku will suddenly develop a quirk in about ten years… or why the thought of grapes makes me strangely furious.’
“I've never seen a quirk quite like this.” The counselor admitted, and I managed to refocus on her. “Your quirk is Animal Empathy, yes?”
“Yes. It works somewhat on people too, but it's much stronger when it comes to animals.” Mom gestured vaguely at the name badge she was still wearing, having hurried over from her veterinary clinic when she got the call.
“And your husband…?”
“His father's quirk-” my mom hesitated for a moment. “I wouldn't know exactly how to say its name in this language. The ability to create small orbs of whatever substance, he's learned the chemical makeup of… probably about the size of that mark on his palm actually.”
I set the Pokeball down and turned over my hand to show the counselor, though it was also an excuse to look at it again myself.
‘Also, why am I suddenly thinking Ponytail cause she said that?’
“So your quirk and his got mashed together into making…?” I gestured to Eevee with my free hand. ‘Seems as good a cover story as anything I can come up with…’
“I suppose.” The counselor said eventually, as if trying to convince herself. “I'll discuss with his teacher the best way to work his sessions with me into his school day, but I believe he's okay to return to classes for the day… unless you'd rather take him home to rest?”
“I don't wanna go home like a baby.” I pouted, crossing my arms. ‘Note to self, adult memories do not magically make me more mature… not always anyway… oh find me in the alps, I'm gonna have to go through puberty again!’
On my lap, Eevee made a soft noise as if he was laughing, and I gave him a suspicious look.
I wasn't totally sure what to do with the Pokeball as I headed back to class, so I just shrunk it down and stuck it into my pocket.
‘Which, does kinda play into the Poke part of the name… not sure I could just stick it on my belt… or maybe I can explain it as a pocket dimension? Pocket Dimension Monster, Pokemon for short? Feels weird to call them anything else…’
And as Eevee jumped up onto my shoulders wrapping around me like a stole, I realized something else.
‘Them. There were hundreds of other Pokemon… no way Eevee is the only one I can… for lack of a better word, summon? Although if I had multiple Eevees and I could evolve all 8 ways that wouldn't be bad either… no, who am I kidding, I still am leaning towards hoping I can get a kickass dragon I can ride or something… plus who the hell knows if it's even possible to evolve an Eevee without elemental stones. Umbreon, Espeon, and Sylveon are maybe doable, but… fuck, I wouldn't be able to evolve a Pikachu either.’
I made another mental note that I now knew a lot of words I shouldn't yet, and didn't want to test if my mother would wash my mouth out with soap if she heard me use them.
The rest of the day went… well, normal wasn't quite the right word, given basically everyone around me had some form of super powers, but I didn't have any more major disruptions.
I'd kind of expected I'd have to return Eevee to his Pokeball, but none of the teachers actually said anything about it. Or maybe it was just that they didn't know it was even possible yet.
Mostly Eevee stayed curled up on my shoulders, or on my lap. Aside from when one of the girls shyly asked if she could pet him, and he soaked up the attention.
I spent a lot of time staring at my hand, at the Pokeball symbol that was now a part of my skin. I wanted to try getting another Pokemon, but wasn't even sure how I'd made Eevee.
‘I don't know if *made* is the right word either. For all I know, I just… sucked him here from a different universe… but I can't really ask him with everyone else around me. Even if I spoke English, don't wanna risk anyone else knowing it and overhearing… not sure how he'd answer anyway, but maybe he can at least nod?’
I heaved a deep sigh and glanced at the clock. ‘What?! Oh come on, how has it only been five minutes since I last looked!? Ugh, why couldn't I have gotten more patience and maturity with the memories too?!’
Eevee shifted on my lap, glancing up at me with an amused expression.
“Laugh it up fuzzball.” I muttered.
‘Wait, does Star Wars exist here? With how many locations in this series were named after planets from that franchise… I am going to need to do so much research later.’
‘Which should sound much worse to someone my age than it actually does, so at least I absorbed that much from Red’s memories.’
Thankfully the school day finallllllly ended.
I wanted to rush home, but couldn't. Mostly because I had to wait for my mom to pick me up, not really knowing where I lived yet anyway.
And Eevee apparently couldn't decide if he wanted to wait next to me or perch on my shoulder, because he kept hopping from one to the other.
“You better not hurt yourself doing that.” I commented as he hopped back down again, easily landing on all fours.
“Well, he does have some traits like a cat.” Izuku commented, waiting for his own mom. “But he also has several that are more dog-like, and if you only just got your quirk you probably don't know what he is either andyoushouldprobablyfigurethatoutsoyouknowwhatheeatsorifheeats-” his words sped up as the volume dropped, and I held up a hand in front of his face, waving it emphatically.
“Whoa, second language, I can't understand Japanese when it's that fast.”
He kept mumbling, hand on his chin and eyes focused on my Pokemon.
“...he does this a lot, huh?” I deadpanned to the nearby blonde.
You have no idea.” Bakugo responded, rolling his eyes as he raised a hand.
The sudden explosion made my Pokemon yelp and jump onto my head. With all four legs wrapped around my skull, he must have looked like some kind of stripeless coon cap. Except much louder, because he was also yelling at Bakugo. “Vee! Vee! Vee!”
Bakugo looked startled for a moment, before his features darkened into a glare. “You better tell that thing to stop barking at me, unless you want me to-”
He didn't get a chance to finish his threat.
The weight was suddenly gone from my head and I only saw a few quick flashes of what happened.
The first glimpse was of Eevee on the ground next to me again.
The second was of him in midair, jumping towards Bakugo.
The third was of Bakugo on the ground, the air knocked out of him, Eevee growling in his face.
My body moved on instinct again, hand plunging into my pocket, grabbing his ball and expanding it.
“Eevee! Return!”
A beam of red light shot from the Pokeball and enveloped him, drawing him into it.
“...the hell was that?!” Bakugo managed, the anger in his voice not quite enough to mask the shakiness as he sat up.
“Apparently he's both protective of me, and much tougher than he looks.” I said, looking at the red and white orb in my hand.
I gave it a little toss, releasing Eevee again, and he bristled as Bakugo got back to his feet.
“Sit boy.”
He gave me a glare, like he both got and was annoyed by the reference, but sat on his haunches at my side. His tail swept back and forth across the ground, far more like a cat than a dog.
“Are you okay Kacchan?” Izuku asked, which only earned him a sneer.
“Like that little monster could actually hurt me.”
“And that's why I'm not apologizing.” I responded dryly. “But if he does that again, aim lower.” I added to Eevee, who looked a little too hopeful for the chance.
I was pretty sure Bakugo didn't actually understand what I'd said, but he seemingly understood the implied threat in my light tone.
His hands crackled slightly, but he didn't otherwise respond.
‘And considering when he's older he'll be able to handle getting hit by All Might, I doubt Eevee would really be able to- wait, why will All Might punch him?!’
I had to fight not to stare. ‘I remember him being a student with Izuku, but I also definitely remember them fighting too…, and if he was the rival, and this is a shonen series… did he have a villain arc, or go full villain?’
Other faces flashed through my mind, quick glimpses I barely recognized and couldn't remember once they were gone, but which filled me with a palpable sense of dread.
‘Was that last guy wearing actual hands? And why were they talking to him like they were on his side? Or wanted him on theirs?’
“I just realized I never heard what your quirk is.” I blurted out towards Izuku, half to kill the silence.
“Oh. Um, I don't actually have mine yet.” He admitted, looking embarrassed, but not worried. “My mom actually set up an appointment for me to find out why it's so late.”
“Eh, whatever your quirk is, there's no way it can be as awesome as mine.” Bakugo dismissed.
“I just got my quirk today and I knocked you on your butt without even trying.”
“Nobody asked you! And it wasn't even you who did it, it was that stupid dog-thing.”
“Stay.” I told my Pokemon as he stood again.
“Eevee!” he protested.
“I really don't want to have to put you back in here.” I held up the Pokeball. “If you behave, people are more likely to let me keep you out. But if you keep attacking every loud mouth-”
“Eevee.”
“I didn't say he wouldn't deserve it, I said I don't want you to get both of us in trouble.”
“You actually understand him?” Izuku asked. Despite himself, Bakugo looked slightly curious too.
“... I guess I can.” I blinked in surprised realization.
“How? He just keeps making the same noise.” Bakugo looked between us, glaring at my Pokemon.
“I don't know either dude. Again, I just got this quirk.”
It turned out even getting Eevee home was more complicated than I'd expected.
At least in my mom's eyes. When she came to pick me up, she brought a harness, collar, leash, and seatbelt adaptor for Eevee. ‘Huh, having a mom who's a veterinarian might be a good thing since my whole quirk seems to basically just be crazy pets.’
I thought about just putting Eevee in the Pokeball, but decided it wasn't worth trying to argue or explain that yet.
Plus he seemed to actually kind of like the small blue collar she'd picked out for him. The two of us did share an amused smirk at the fact it had a tag with our last name and address though.
“I know some of this may not be necessary.” She said as she buckled me into my own car seat- something I hadn't thought about needing until that moment. “But don't forget, the laws about quirk use are stricter here than in America.”
“Would I actually get in trouble just for having him out?”
“I don't know yet.” She admitted. “I'm going to look into what it would take to get Eevee registered as a service animal, or if that's even possible for something that's part of your quirk. He might count as a sentient quirk instead… but regardless, he's your responsibility, just like if he was a normal pet.”
“Eevee.” He said smugly, settling down on the seat next to me.
“It's a good thing you're so darn cute.” I grumbled. ‘And that we both know I can just shove you back in the Pokeball if you push it.’
He looked up at me through half lidded eyes, but gave an almost imperceptible nod.
‘Okay, seriously, can you read my mind or not?’
The little bastard just yawned in response and made a show of pretending to sleep.
'Something tells me I'm m never going to get a straight answer to that.'
