Chapter Text
Nico had no idea whether to run or run and never show his face again. It was bad enough that Nico even had a soulmate let alone his soulmate being Will Solace. One of his only friends. He obviously didn’t want to ruin the friendship but he couldn’t just ignore it.
“Nico, you okay?” Will asked, waving a hand in front of Nico’s face.
“Yeah sorry. Just zoned out.” Nico replied nonchalantly.
Will nodded but didn’t let the concern look on his face go, he turned around and walked out the front door. Nico followed because what else could he do? Will didn’t know Nico was his soulmate and maybe he never needed to know.
Will walked over to a car parked near Lou Ellen’s house and opened the passenger door like the gentleman he was. Nico mumbled a quick thanks as he climbed in the car. Will closed the door which gave Nico approximately ten seconds of being alone and mainly panicking. All that was going through Nico’s mind was, what do I do what do I do what do I do. By the fifth ‘what do I do’ Will got in the car which made Nico panic even more.
“What’s your address?” Will asked, buckling his seatbelt in.
Nico told him his address, Will nodded and searched it up on his maps app on his phone. Nico’s mind went over his options, he could either,
A: Tell Will that he has the same soulmate mark and probably ruin the friendship and they’ll never speak again.
or
B: Never tell Will that he has the same soulmate mark and probably never act normal around Will anymore.
Both options weren’t looking so good. Who on earth even made the concept of soulmates up?! What if these marks don’t even represent soulmates but the person he would hate the most? (Nico found it pretty hard to hate Will though)
Nico risked a glance over to Will who was staring intently at the road, probably focusing on driving. Nico bit his lip and decided to just be impulsive because he will totally not regret that decision later.
“Hey Will-“
“Hey Nico-“
Will and Nico spoke at the same time. Nico looked to Will who was already glancing between him and the road.
“Sorry, you can go first.” Nico said swiftly.
What was he doing? Was he seriously about to tell Will about the soulmate thing? He was glad for Will’s interruption because Nico could absolutely not tell Will about the soulmate mark.
“Okay..” Will took a deep breath.
“This soulmate thing. I don’t really care about it you know? Why does the universe get to decide who we love and who we don’t? Anyway, I just don’t care about it.”
“Same! It’s so stupid.” Nico tried to laugh but he ended up sounding more like a dying horse.
Will, however did laugh. He shook his head as he glanced to Nico.
“What I’m saying is that I like you. And honestly I don’t care who my soulmate is, for all I know they could be a dickhead.”
Nico’s eyes widened. Right. Ok. He could do this! Will must’ve noticed Nico’s surprised expression and quickly jumped in to say,
“And if you don’t that’s totally fine!”
“No! I do..I also like you and I would love to get to know you better..but” Nico paused, staring out the window.
He looked back to Will who was waiting for an answer, glancing between Nico and the road ahead of them.
“I need to tell you something.” Nico said finally.
Nico couldn’t find the words so he just rolled up his jacket sleeve instead. He saw Will’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise.
“I..that’s..wow.” Will whispered.
Nico bit his lip; he had no idea what to say. Will seemed just as speechless as he stared out at the road ahead, not really paying attention to the road which was probably a safety hazard. Finally, Nico found the words.
“But just like you said right? I don’t care about soulmates and we liked each other before we even found out. It doesn’t matter, not to me at least.”
“It doesn’t matter to me either. I like you and it doesn’t matter if the universe wants us to be together because..I only care if you want us to be together.” Will said as he slowed to a stop in front of Nico’s house. He looked as if he was about to cry.
“I want to be together and I agree, the universe doesn’t get to decide.” Nico smiled.
Will smiled softly, not the big grin he wore when he was with Cecil or Lou Ellen. A smile that was meant for Nico, no one else.
“One step at a time.” Will said gently as he reached for Nico’s hand.
“One step at a time.” Nico repeated back, squeezing Will’s hand.
