Jack’s POV

The sound of talking grew closer as I continued walking. As I neared the voices, I crouched down and carefully made my way toward a nearby bush. With this island practically screaming magic, I knew I had to be careful. I had no idea if whoever—or whatever—was out there was friendly.

As the voices drew closer to my hiding spot, I held my breath and waited, hoping nothing would give away my position.

Then something landed on my shoulder.

I screamed.

I immediately fell backward onto my backside as the creature fluttered down to my feet. It stared at me almost accusingly, and I glared back at it just as cautiously. After a moment; however, its posture relaxed. It tilted its head curiously and sniffed in my direction.

It looked like some kind of reptile, but it was unlike anything I had ever seen. Its head seemed almost too large for its body, giving it a strangely round appearance. Green scales faded into red along its body, while two large yellow eyes stared directly into my soul.

How charming.

Despite my better judgment, I slowly reached out a hand, intending to touch the tiny creature.

Then I heard something; a voice.

“What was that scream?”

Shit.

I quickly looked around, trying to figure out where the voice had come from. Slowly, I backed away, doing my best not to make a sound.

Unfortunately, the tiny lizard apparently had other plans.

It sneezed.

WHOOSH!

I froze immediately after.

Then, without warning, a burst of flame shot from its mouth and set the bush directly in front of me on fire.

I stared at the flames in complete disbelief.

You have got to be kidding me. I thought to myself.

The same voice spoke again, much closer this time.

“Uh… okay. That’s definitely not supposed to be on fire.”

Okay. What should I do?

I glanced around frantically, before looking back at the flames. A figure was approaching from the other side of the fire.

My fight or flight response kicked in. Taking a few quick steps backward, my back suddenly hit a tree. I turned my head, saw that the trunk was large enough to hide me, and immediately darted behind it.

I pressed myself against the bark and waited. Maybe he hadn’t seen me. Maybe I could just stay quiet until he left.

“Oh. Of course.”

The voice said it almost like he had just figured something out. Then I felt something move.

I slowly turned my head.

Another lizard stared back at me. Except this one was much bigger.

Its scales were as black as the night sky, and its emerald green eyes locked onto mine. For what felt like an eternity, neither of us moved.

Then the creature suddenly grabbed me by the hood of my clothing.

“Hey—!” I exclaimed.

It dragged me around the tree and jumped onto me, pinning me against the ground. I grunted in surprise and immediately tried pushing it off, but the creature was far stronger than it looked.

“Uh… Toothless?” A voice called out.

I abruptly looked up toward the voice. Two legs stood directly in front of me, and one of them had a metal peg.

My muscles coiled like a spring.

Wait a minute…

My eyes slowly traveled upward. The stranger looked down at me, seemingly just as confused by my presence as I was by his.

Then he spoke, “Okay… I have about a hundred questions, but I’m going to start with the obvious one.” He paused. “Who are you?”

Hiccup’s POV

This island is weird.

That’s the only way I can describe it.

I watch as Toothless leaps from the trees to the ground, occasionally glancing back at me to make sure I’m still following. I can’t help but let out a small sound of amusement at the gesture.

As we continue walking, I look around at the strange plants growing throughout the area. Curious, I reach out and run my fingers through a cluster of flowers.

Something sparkles.

I stop.

A fine, shimmering dust drifts from the flowers, twisting and twirling around my hand before slowly fading into the air.

“Wow…”

Beautiful.

This place is completely otherworldly. I can’t help but wonder how the others and I never discovered this island before. With everything we’ve seen, I didn’t think there was much left that could surprise me.

Then a loud sound suddenly cuts through my thoughts. I immediately peered north.

Toothless stops too, turning his head toward the noise. He looks just as confused as I feel.

“What was that?”

Toothless glances at me before making a quiet, questioning sound.

“Yeah. I don’t know either.”

I slowly move toward the sound, keeping my eyes on the surrounding trees. I hold up a hand, signaling Toothless to stay quiet but remain alert. He understands immediately.

Toothless lowers himself and moves ahead of me, his ears perked as he carefully searches the area.

We continue forward until we finally stop.

Silence.

I hold my breath, listening for any sign of movement.

Then,

WHOOSH!

A bush right beside me suddenly bursts into flames and I sprung backward.

“What the—?”

I stare at the burning bush, completely dumbfounded.

“Uh… okay. That’s definitely not supposed to be on fire.”

I glance at Toothless. He looks at the bush. Then at me. Then back at the bush.

I gesture for him to go around while I carefully step around the flames. And that’s when I spot it. A Terrible Terror is sitting nearby, scratching at its nose.

I blink.

The little dragon sneezes. I look back at the burning bush. Then my gaze returns back to the Terrible Terror.

“Oh.”

I put my hands on my hips and let out a long sigh.

“Of course.”

Before I can say anything else, I hear a sudden noise behind me. Then a voice.

“Hey—!”

I turn around and Toothless suddenly darts past me, grabbing someone by the hood and dragging them around the side of a tree. Before I can even process what’s happening, he pins the stranger to the ground.

I stare and call out, “Uh… Toothless?”

I step closer, trying to get a better look at whoever he dragged out of hiding. It’s a boy.

I can’t see his face very well with Toothless standing over him, but I notice the blue tunic he’s wearing and a mess of white hair beneath his hood.

I pause, processing his facial features. Something about him feels… unfamiliar.

Wait a second.

I take another step forward, staring at him.

"Okay... I have about a hundred questions, but I'm going to start with the obvious one. Who are you?”
