Chapter Text
"See you tomorrow. Subaru-san, Paul-san, thank you for your services!"
With a wave, Laws pulled the boar's body with difficulty into the house.
"Make sure you don't eat it all today!"
"My mouth can't hold that much food, Subaru-san."
After our hunt for these wild animals, Paul and I decided to deliver a whole carcass to Laws and his family so they wouldn't have problems in the cold. We're companions, but above all, friends, so it's obvious we'll help each other's families. There's also the fact that Laws is the father of Sylph, Rudeus's friend.
That's right, I forgot to mention, Sylph is a girl. I found out in the first few days that I became friends with her, but Rudeus took a long time to finally notice the differences.
When a misunderstanding arose, and they even argued about it, which ultimately turned out to be just a misinterpretation, Rudeus told me that Sylph's mannerisms were feminine, but he thought he was just a boy with effeminate mannerisms.
Boy, you are ignorant!
He's really just a child, even though he's intelligent…
I realized that Rudeus is clever, especially when it comes to magic and some concepts that even I, coming from another world, hadn't thought of. I feel like I see someone who could end up becoming a monster like Reinhard, but smaller. His knowledge of how to change the form of magic is something only someone with a lot of imagination, which is what a child has, can achieve. His teachings are quite clear too, but when I asked him how he learned to be this way, he gave all the credit to Roxy, his teacher. I wonder how amazing she is after so much praise; I must say that my first impression wasn't very strong, but I'm an expert at judging a book by its cover, and being wrong in the end.
His advancement in ranks is also superior to mine, except for healing magic, which he said he can't reproduce as well due to his mindset. I imagine that spells are related to the caster's emotions, I think? If so, now I understand why my earth spells are heavier and more brutal than Rudeus's delicate and complex ones.
About Sylph, she's truly a kind girl. It seems Rudeus met her after saving her from bullying, something I seriously despise. I don't know how anyone could want to hurt something so sweet, what a cruel world! I have to protect her at all costs!
I became closer to Sylph because of training with Rudeus. I always talked to her about magic, and also about her family, which she has a little difficulty talking about because she feels excluded due to having different characteristics from her parents. But what further increased my desire to get closer to her was the paternal feeling within me. I can't escape these emotions; they always appear when I see someone I can protect and help, and who is also younger than me.
For me, the younger generation needs to enjoy life so they don't end up like me, always receiving as much love and affection as possible so they can become incredible people in the future, similar to what happened with Meili and Petra. I don't say I'm their father, but I consider them my daughters, and I also say that if they want, I'll accept them into my family. Petra says it's a huge responsibility and that she thinks differently about me, and Meili thinks it's impossible for me to become her relative, but she sees me in a positive light as I try to be her caregiver.
I think I strayed a bit from the topic; talking about them brings tears to my eyes!
Getting closer to Sylph, I learned more about her father Laws, and also about why she was insecure about her features, even though I think elves are supposed to be beautiful beings.
Apparently, her green hair is something that came from other unknown sources, something that perhaps arose from some change during her birth, but which caused complications as she grew up. She seems to like her family, but feels she doesn't deserve them, which I think is very wrong!
But I can't blame a child like Sylph. Apparently, her green hair might be perceived as something bad by many people. I asked Rudeus if he knew about it, and he replied that it was described in the stories I'd read, and that I should pay more attention.
Then I remembered. The Superds clan, they had green hair and a crimson jewel in the center of their forehead, almost like a third eye. They were a clan that participated in an ancient war alongside a powerful man named Laplace, resulting in the deaths of many people and villages.
I wonder if they are inherently evil, or if they were influenced by this man called Laplace. But just from reading it, I already disliked Laplace, and even more so the warnings about being careful with those who have green hair. How can they teach that in a book? What will children think?
Not only that, but it seems the story of the Superds is like the boogeyman in my world; if you do something wrong, one will come to get you at night. I don't believe that, much less that they still want to wage war, especially after their defeat, but there are still people who believe it's better to take precautions and distance themselves from beings with these characteristics, precisely to avoid the danger of dying.
That's how I understood the reason for the bullying of Sylph; those children must have heard that story, seen her with green hair, and started to hate her existence. Children are truly mean when they want to be…
I never saw her that way, even after hearing her story. Maybe that's why we became friends, she really is a sweetheart! Rudeus, if you make her cry again, I'll beat you up!!!
Regarding my magic, in these six months I've progressed a lot, developing almost 200% from what I initially knew. I focused all my attention on earth magic, healing and detoxification; it was necessary to focus on only one type of magic, and I chose these to become strong. These are spells that I see as practical, in the case of earth magic, and that are fundamental for a group, in the case of healing and detoxification magic.
Rudeus said I should train something more offensive, so I trained my water magic, and at the moment I can perform spells focused on ice or water at high temperatures. Apparently, magic in this world, which is omnipotent, can be modified using the boiling or cooling points I learned at school to produce different spells. I learned that it's possible to perform lightning or snow magic using only one element and modifying its complexity. I didn't seek to learn everything, I just used what I knew, and finally I managed to develop ice magic for myself.
Regarding the other levels of magic, I'm at square one. I like fire magic, but I don't see any use for it other than offensively or to light a campfire; wind magic is the same, I haven't developed any interest in it.
I tried connecting to my mana portal to see if anything was different, and I can even feel a slight connection, but nothing happens.
Is it possible that this world doesn't allow it?
Considering that my authority has been reduced to personal abilities, then my spells in my first invocation must be within me, but modified.
Looking at my development, I can say that I've become quite strong in this world. Unfortunately, I haven't become the strongest, but I'm above average, that's what Rudeus told me. He also said that I would have to be born again to become as strong as he will become. What an arrogant child!
But my plan isn't to become the strongest. I just want to be powerful enough to return to my old world, that's all. I don't aspire to Rudeus's status as a great mage, nor is it my favorite class!
"You're thinking out loud again, Subaru."
"Oh, sorry. I have a habit of doing that."
"I got used to it. You can't know what's going on in other people's heads."
Carrying the boar almost single-handedly, he looked at me, who was helping by carrying it from behind:
"If you have any worries on your mind, don't hold back and speak up."
"...No, I don't have any. I even think you're the one who should be worried about what might happen when we get there, Paul. Imagine if Zenith-chan decides to tell you she wants a divorce?"
“DON’T EVEN JOKE ABOUT THAT! Get those ideas out of here, I couldn’t live with myself if that happened.”, stopping walking. “If you happen to approach Zenith with malicious thoughts, I’ll cut your penis off.”
"N-no need for any of that, Paul, I don't think so!"
"I know, but now that you and Lilia have cooled off, you're looking for some hole to stick yourself in."
"Enough talking about this, please?! I'm not used to men talking at this level!"
“Lazy.”
Arriving home, we kicked through the snow to get inside, placing the animal's body near the stable.
"Come in, let me dissect the animal, you don't know how to use a knife."
"You could teach me, Paul, then I'd have less work to do."
"No. If you want to learn, learn on your own."
"Of course, of course..."
Pulling a knife from his waist, the man had barely returned home when he began dissecting the wild boar. His hands and technique are truly impressive, removing the animal's skin without any trouble. I imagine how many times he must have done this same process…
"Wait."
"What happened? Did you cut your finger by accident? I'm not going to lick the blood, it's too cold."
"What the hell are you talking about, kid?! Argh…"
"I'm just kidding! Tell me what you wanted, I'm listening, Paul-chan."
"Paul-chan, huh... It's just a silly thing I'm thinking."
"Silly things are important, imagine living without them? I'm known for breaking promises, and you're known for being a scoundrel."
“I see that as a good thing,” he said, smiling as he easily cut through the skin. “...I wanted to say that you've been a great help to Zenith these days. If it weren't for you being here, when she started having nausea…”
"Don't continue, and it wasn't just me, Lilia and Rudy are here too."
Unfortunately, Lilia also started having similar symptoms. I wonder if it was a consequence of something we ate, but with Zenith I already knew that the deep nausea was about… Well, she'll tell you in a moment.
"Take advantage of the fact that I'm speaking well of you, Subaru. Normally I just insult you."
"You're right, thank you very much, Paul, I appreciate your compliments..."
"Boy… sigh. I hope you don't suddenly disappear from this family. You also make Zenith happy when, on weekends, you decide to practice your healing magic with her and Rudy. She doesn't have anyone to share that with, and I don't like that…”
“— — —”
"...What? Ah, I'm talking about helping! Your money is saving us from this cold, and it's also the first time we've been eating well during the winter."
"Paul-chan... Don't make me cry with you, brother!"
"Turn that dirty face away! I'm covered in blood too!"
"I'll never be able to hate you... Even with all the problems, bleh!"
"Damn it..."
During that winter, I helped at Greyrat House as a butler, but all my efforts were focused on keeping the place stocked with food and warm. Since we had to care for two women and a child, it was necessary for the men to be the main ones to help.
Not that Zenith and Lilia don't help too, but I want them to stay safe and warm inside the house. If someone has to go outside and risk their life to keep others safe, let it be me… And obviously Paul, who has been doing this every year.
One news story and the coldest day of the month, what coincidences.
"...Welcome back, Subaru."
"Lilia! So you're the one who's been greeting me?"
"Sorry, Zenith is preparing the side dishes for lunch."
"I'm not complaining! It's just that... Lately, you've been more reserved with me, so I got worried."
"Your worries are unnecessary, Subaru. I'm... I'm fine."
"This break doesn't help at all!"
Lilia seemed tense about something, her violet eyes slowly descending over my body until they met the floor. Something had happened these past few days that had made her distance herself from me; I even thought about asking what it was, but I felt it would only make the situation worse.
They say it's better to ask and resolve the situation right away, but I know there are times when time heals all wounds.
It's no wonder that, after all this time, Lilia finally started talking to me normally again. Still reserved, just like in the first few days, but it was still progress, not a step backward.
She seemed worried about something.
But knowing Lilia, she would respond the same way, telling me not to worry about her problems, and that I should focus on my own concerns.
But still, I feel the urge to ask. I might get a different answer than I think, and then I can solve your problem. That's how it works: if something bothers me, I say so; if I see someone else bothered, I ask.
That's why I was hypocritical and opened my mouth to ask and…
“— — —”
Her eyes turned to me, trembling slightly. Her neutral expression vanished, leaving only anguish in her gaze. She felt something; it was just me who hadn't had the courage to ask until now, afraid of a thought that only I had.
How can I be so childish?
I looked at Paul back there, and then at her. I don't mind talking now, but at least let it not be in this cold.
Her large maid clothes, made for cold weather, didn't seem to be enough to keep her from feeling it. I could see her ears, nose, and cheeks reddened from the chill, and the slight trembling in her hands, which even though she tried to hide it, I could still perceive the effects of winter.
"Let's go inside first, I don't want you to get hypothermia."
"Hypothermia? That would be impossible, Subaru—"
"Don't say anything. Let's go inside, don't stay out here in the cold! Let me help you with this, at least."
"Subaru..."
Placing my hand on her shoulder, I pulled her closer and opened the door, the cold wind billowing into the kitchen. I felt her run her hand over my fingers as she rested her head on my chest, and we went inside together.
"If you need my shirt, don't hesitate to ask."
“...Hm.”
Again, her shy and distant manner. She let go of me and went to walk over to Zenith, who seemed to be cooking something.
Feeling my body warm up, I shook off the snow, kicked it out, and closed the door.
We've arrived!
"Thank you for your hard work," Zenith greeted me.
I was worried that my entrance might have disturbed Zenith while she was cooking, but that didn't seem to be the case. Anticipating that something like this might happen, there was a special tarp near the fireplace and wood-burning stove, designed to protect the area from the cold and direct all the oxygen towards the flames.
"Did you do that?"
"Is there a problem? Did I do something wrong? I've always done it this way..."
"I'm not complaining! I just thought it was clever. I thought you guys cast fire spells when the flame goes out, and keep repeating that process."
"Su-ba-ru. Do you think we're some kind of ancient society? Of course I'd know how to tend to a flame."
"Okay, you've already destroyed me, thanks, Zenith-chan."
"Then don't think that way anymore... Now, where's Paul?"
"Outside, tending to the wild boar we hunted. I see you're already preparing the side dishes... Mmm, that smells good."
I could smell a faint scent of mayonnaise in the air, but it seems she also made vegetables and a hot soup to go with the wild boar meat.
"I'm learning to cook the way you taught."
"I only taught a few tricks. If you really want to thank me, talk to the person who taught me."
Unfortunately, most of what I learned was from Rem in the kitchen; she truly was an amazing housekeeper. Thank you, Rem!
"Hmm, this person must be quite skilled then, I want to meet them."
"H-heh... Yes, someday, yes."
Approaching the table, I sat down, relaxing in the chair.
Lilia, who had been standing until now, went to the cupboard, organizing the cutlery and plates.
I wanted to talk to her, so when she passed by me, I touched her arm to get her attention.
"Let's talk later."
"...Understood, Subaru." She nodded, looking tense.
I let go of her clothes, but she remained by my side.
"...Lilia, know that I want to help you, so don't lie to me."
“...No… Don't talk to me in that kind way.”
Whispering something, she continued distributing the rest of the silverware.
Was I too direct?
While waiting for Zenith to finish lunch, Paul showed up and that's how the final preparations for us to eat began.
I knew that, to deliver news, it was best to eat, relax my stomach, and then say what I wanted to say… But Paul's expression says it all: This guy is scared.
"That smells good... Can I grab a piece and take it to my room?"
"Absolutely not, boy! Today you're eating with the family!"
"But... Okay, Mom..."
Rudeus appeared with the spellbook in his hands. This winter he stayed only inside his room, like a recluse. I'm sure he hates this weather, since he can't be with Sylph and practice magic outside because of the cold.
However, he still does this inside his house in his room. I've already peeked in to see what he was capable of, and wow, he's trying to create action figures! The first one I saw was of Roxy, or at least an attempt at making her, but it's still a great step forward.
Sitting down, he placed the book on the table, only to see Zenith give him that look only mothers can give, compelling him to put the book back in its proper place so he could eat.
"Okay... Shall we eat?"
So, we had our last meal before the big reveal.
"Congratulations, Mom!"
Rudeus embraced Zenith, who gave her son a warm smile.
“So… I’m going to be a father again…”, Paul looked up, trying to wipe away imaginary tears. “I hope it’s a boy who likes swords!”
"I felt that sting, Dad."
Embracing Zenith, he lifted her up.
"W-w-wawawawah, Paul! Not like that!"
Hitting him on the head was a special moment between couples; I didn't really have much of a role to play in it.
I still had food on my plate, since I was eating little by little, and I watched the wonderful news that Zenith gave me: She was pregnant again.
It amazes me that Paul didn't notice right away when Zenith started having a loss of appetite for certain foods, constant nausea, and refusing to engage in kinky behavior in bed.
I don't know the baby's gender until birth, but I hope it's a girl this time. I like being the older brother, just like I was to Garfield, but I feel I'm better at taking care of a girl. I wonder if my parents thought the same when they had me.
"It seems that winter has delivered something interesting."
I don't know how many weeks she is, but I feel like the "process" started a few days ago. What happiness! Another member of the family…
Another member joining the family… huh, I always imagined this day would come, but now that I have to face it, I don't know how to react.
I'm living in this house and they treat me like an older brother, a distant cousin who helps Rudeus grow up and helps Lilia with the housework, and now I'm helping Paul at the Buena barrier to protect these people.
But now with a new pregnancy, I imagine it's going to be difficult from now on, another mouth to feed, and savings aren't plentiful in this house. Yes, we have food, we have a bed to sleep in, but we're still humble compared to the levels of wealth in this world. The more people living in this house, the harder it will be to manage the costs.
I heard that Paul and Zenith only had no difficulty dealing with Rudeus because Lilia was there, and also because he was a very different child from the others, even considered… a strange child. But even so, they struggled with feeding and care.
Now with another child, finances will be even tighter, and another room will be needed. Even with Zenith helping at the village clinic or Paul having his salary, it wouldn't be enough to support someone who earns the least amount. Lilia doesn't keep the money either, sending most of it to her family, so how will they manage the family like this?
I bit my inner cheek; I had to be strong, but above all, responsible for the future.
That day was bound to come, wasn't it?
I work here and help out as much as I can, without receiving any money. Zenith even tried to give me a salary, but I refused. Now, guarding the barrier, I can help this house with some of the savings I receive.
However, I can't live here forever; I had to deal with the responsibilities of adult life on my own.
I don't know when, but this could be the beginning of my departure from the Grayrat house. It's time for Subaru Natsuki to become an adult, pay bills, and have his own place…
Having your own family…
My eyes met Lilia's, who kept her head down the whole time.
Similar to Zenith, she also started having problems during her shift, such as relapses or forgetting certain information. There was also the issue of not speaking to me, which saddened me because I felt ignored, but I also understood; she didn't seem to be doing well since I denied her feelings.
Now, it's a different situation. I wonder what I would do if she kissed me…
Seeing that there was happiness in one corner, I decided to think about Lilia, who was more withdrawn.
“Zenith-sama…”, Lilia took a step forward, standing in the middle of the cutout on the table.
I could see her face; she seemed determined with her words, but her hands just below trembled at the outcome.
“Lilia?” Zenith turned her blue eyes to the maid. “You seem very tense, what happened? Tell me.”
Zenith asked the question before I did.
I felt a bitter taste in my mouth as I stood up. It was time for me to say that I would be available to help Lilia with whatever problem she had.
"Please forgive me for interrupting Zenith-sama's moment..."
I was confident enough to call Lilia and talk to her openly about everything. Our relationship, what she feels for me, what I might feel for her. I don't mean to say I'm going to steal her from the Greyrat family, but you know, I'm a grown man, I also have feelings for women, and Lilia hit the nail on the head when she was the first to offer help.
"There's something I need to share with you all..."
I'm a bit easygoing; when given a little attention, I tend to give three times as much. Unfortunately for Lilia, I'm a slow learner, but she can understand. I know I can fall in love with someone else, even in another world, like Subaru Natsuki himself loving another woman.
I was determined to ask what we could do together. Lilia and I.
“I’m sorry,” she announced casually, with a blank expression. “I’m pregnant.”
I held back from vomiting.
Everyone in the Greyrat family fell silent, wondering at that moment who the son was.
I, on the other hand, froze in my feet; if I tried to move, I'm sure I would fall.
I stared at Lilia's face the whole time, as she bowed before her family, her eyes wide open and the same emotionless expression.
Zenith showed no reaction whatsoever.
Obviously, the birth of a new life should be celebrated; now, in addition to Zenith having a new son or daughter, Lilia was also blessed with the possibility of having children, which was a reason to celebrate even more, despite the financial difficulties that would arise later.
But no, everyone who heard the sentence had the same thought:Who was the father?
There was no way to blame anyone outside the house; there was no "promised person" for Lilia outside of it. After all, she hardly ever went out, and when she did, guess who accompanied her?
I don't know how to react to this situation.
I only had one option, and… I didn't have the courage to speak.
"It's possible that the child... is mine," Paul raised his hand, his eyes wide.
A few months ago, she said she didn't know how to feel about me, whether it was just a passing thing or something real. I took the opposite approach, believing it was something real rather than just a passing thing, but we both took a break and waited.
At least, that's what I imagined was happening, but communication doesn't exist in this house.
I thought about waiting for the right moment. Today. Today would be the moment to take the first step, but no, the path ripped my legs off before I could even begin.
Looking at the rest of the family, Rudeus seemed shocked, while Paul… Paul seemed to be having a flashback of what he had done in the last few months.
Zenith didn't react; her genuine happiness at being able to be a mother again burned to the ground.
As for me, I took one step back, then two, and then turned my back, heading towards the door.
"S-Subaru!", Rudeus shouted.
I flung the door open, letting the icy wind rush in, then jumped out and slammed the door shut.
The cold wind whipped against my face and stung my eyes. I felt the soft snow beneath my feet as the blizzard began to batter my body.
I walked very slowly through the garden, stopping in the middle as I felt my body freeze.
It was the most terribly cold day of the month, and here I am, outside, grinding my molars until my teeth ache.
I don't own anyone, I haven't promised my life to anyone, but I was determined to do it.
I clenched my fists, looking up at the cloudy night, without stars, without a moon, only the snow falling on my face.
I felt angry.
Anger at this situation. Anger at what's going to happen. Anger at Lilia. Anger at myself. Anger at the past. Anger at not being in my own world. Anger at having to endure this. Anger at not telling anyone. Anger at having no one. Anger. Anger. Anger. Anger.
"What am I doing? Am I an idiot? Of course I'm an idiot."
I stopped thinking for a moment.
I stood there, staring into nothingness for a while.
Since I arrived in this world, I've had only one goal: To go back home.
As the days went by, I found new goals: To help Rudeus. To help Zenith. To help Paul and to help Lilia.
So, the month passed, and new ones emerged: To explore the world. To meet new people. To become strong. To learn more about history.
All those goals, for that moment alone, vanished, leaving only one: To question whether what I'm doing is necessary.
I need to think for myself.
Why am I angry? That's the conclusion I've come to.
Nobody came outside to call me back, or if they did, I didn't hear them.
The cold front began to hurt not only my body, but also my body. Even with my sweater on, I felt my skin hardening; I could die of hypothermia at any moment.
But no, I looked down, letting the snow fall from the top of my head, and staggering from the cold, I tried to gather as much determination as possible to take the steps and return to that house.
“...Emilia.”
Biting my lip, I said the name that gives me strength, and then, with heavy steps, I returned inside the house.
I remembered something she told me.
"Subaru forgives very easily. But that's not a bad thing! The truth is, he's a veeeery good boy who knows that people can change!"
To think that her words warm my heart at this moment. She was right, I was someone who forgives easily, but that doesn't mean I'll be at peace after everything.
The thing is, compared to the people who killed me or the people I love during failed attempts, this is nothing. I looked like a child thinking it was the end of the world.
But even so, I felt a pang in my heart; nobody deserves to go through this situation.
As soon as I opened the door, I saw Lilia sitting with her head down, while Zenith kept her hand on her face, lost in thought. The wind that came in didn't disturb the moment.
I imagine my anger is minimal compared to hers; she has every right to feel this way. I looked for the other two, only to find Rudeus leaning against the door, with no sign of Paul.
I imagine he got a good slap.
Only Lilia reacted to my arrival, looking at me. Her eyes conveyed two things: concern and forgiveness.
I don't know what to feel.
She opened her mouth to say something, but turned her face away, remaining silent. I wonder, what would she say?
From what little I could see, it was the first time Lilia had tear marks in her eyes, and today of all days, during the worst time to shed tears.
Zenith showed no reaction.
“...Zenith”
"Don't worry, Subaru. This conversation is between me and Lilia."
The words were a warning: Don't interfere.
Still, I couldn't leave the kitchen.
Zenith glanced sideways at me and sighed. She knows I don't give up easily.
Looking at Lilia, the woman began:
"How long?"
"Forgiveness…?"
"How long have they been doing this?"
“— — —”
"Answer me."
Zenith didn't bang her fist on the table, didn't raise her voice, she just asked. Her passive-aggressive nature was the most frightening thing about her; everyone knew Zenith was angry, but she remained calm like no one else.
"...Three."
"Years? Months? Weeks? Days?"
"Three months..."
They've been doing this for quite some time.
Considering the timeline, I remember that Lilia started to become colder towards me around that time, when our relationship reached its lowest point, whether in terms of passion or friendship.
We were gradually getting to know each other, until she revealed this.
I thought we were slowly getting back together, the same way we used to interact, but no, that was just her attempt to suppress her own guilt by spending that minimal amount of time with me.
What must she have been thinking all along? That I would be happy receiving a little attention so I wouldn't feel guilty? Or did Lilia decide to do this for her own benefit?
What led her to this point?
"How and why?"
"It was on the weekends... I felt alone."
"Weekends..."
It was precisely on the days that Zenith, Rudeus, and I went out to practice magic.healingOr to go to the clinic where she works so she can advise me.
Yes, I was also thinking about working to help.thathouse.
"...I can leave now, Zenith-sama."
"How are you going to leave at this station?"
"I intend to go to my hometown. I will stay here, assist in Zenith-sama's delivery, and then I will leave."
That was a very cruel way of thinking.
"You know the trip there takes thirty days non-stop. How are you going to manage with a newborn?"
"I... I'll figure something out."
"Are you planning to kill yourself?"
My words even made Zenith's eyes widen as he stared at me.
I knew the look Lilia had; it was the same look I'd had at one point in my life: desolation.
He had no reason to continue, if he went on with his life, it was by chance; if he ended up dying, what bad luck, but don't condemn the world, it might be a good thing…
That's how you think. Your violet eyes staring at me with that same spark of despair in your gaze. It may not be today or tomorrow that you'll explode, but the moment will come when you can't take it anymore.
Assuming Zenith was about to give birth to the first child, Lilia still had a few weeks until it was her turn. She said she would leave after giving birth, as she wasn't in a condition to do anything alone while months pregnant.
So it was obvious what she would do, for herself, for the guilt, and for the innocent child.
"I can see that in you, Lilia. But I really need to see if…"
This will either break my heart or not.
At that moment I was hurt, but I wanted to help, however there were differences in that. I could, indeed, want to help as a kind person, and help Lilia and that child. But I would be betraying myself by saying that everything is fine, just so as not to hurt the people around me.
The other option was to see if I would get hurt more by not helping Lilia, to see if it was really worth helping, even after what she did.
Something within me began to awaken: Kyōmei, the Authority of Wrath.
Closing my eyes, I began to feel her emotions. I wanted to learn what Lilia felt about everything, because people can lie, but their hearts cannot.
Connection - Kyōmei
Lilia felt disgusted with herself. Her panicked mind betrayed the guilt of doing this to Paul, the weakness of giving herself to a married man to suppress her desires.
She didn't do it out of malice or as a game, it was out of desperation. Now Lilia was a broken soul, who succumbed to the pressure, and she was alone, ready to be treated like trash if necessary, where even if she died afterward, she wouldn't be angry with Zenith, or with Paul.
Lilia didn't want to die, but still, her heart couldn't bear the guilt. Her whole body screamed for action: Escape. She only wanted one way out of this situation, and escape, with her death at the end, seemed the most viable option.
But I couldn't accept that.
"I can't let her go. I won't let her run away from her responsibilities."
"...Subaru.", Lilia continued to look at me.
No, I don't want you to look, I might end up doing something bad.
May those hateful thoughts die in her place, please.
“I can’t leave Lilia alone. I can support her with my salary, even in another house, but I ask that you help me take care of the child when the time comes.”
“— — —”, Zenith massaged his face. “What are you thinking? Your salary is the lowest in the house.”
"I'll figure something out."
"No, Subaru, you're not."
Coming from the Millis Church, it was inconceivable for couples to have more than one lover in their relationship; it was one of the main commandments, and Paul had broken it.
Zenith was someone who always cherished her religion, from the magic she used to the school she attended and the life she built. Now, she would have to betray those teachings to help the person who had also betrayed her trust.
But it wasn't just difficult for her. For me, I wanted to disappear.
It wasn't just romantic frustration, it went much further; feelings of jealousy grew, along with self-deception, imagining that I could achieve something like that in this new world.
The feeling that remains is that I was just a blind fool looking for the first person who would give me that feeling. But it seems I also let her get to that point. However, that's not my fault; if you want to point fingers, then curse human emotions, something we'll never lose.
“I need to think,” she said, running a hand over her face, then turned her gaze back to Lilia. “Leave me alone.”
“Understood, Zenith-sama.”
Lilia was the first to get up, walking quickly to her room. She passed by me, her trembling eyes unable to meet my gaze. Her serious demeanor had vanished long ago; nothing protected her anymore, the shell of a guilty woman had contaminated her entire existence.
I stood there, watching Zenith fight against his inner demons.
“Subaru.”
"I understand, please take all the time you need to think."
Leaving, I walked towards my room. Passing the stairs on the second floor, I saw Rudeus staring at me.
"Subaru, this situation..."
"Don't worry, you can go to sleep. These topics are still too adult for you to understand."
"I understand, but Lilia..."
"No, you don't understand. Please don't worry."
Looking behind Rudeus, Paul clutched his own cloak. He seemed shocked by the situation, even though he was at the center of it all.
His eyes turned to me.
I'll only listen to what he has to say after Zenith decides.
I went up to my room, but before that, there was some movement in Lilia's room.
The door was ajar, so I could see what was happening:
Lilia began packing her things. Even before making the decision, she had already prepared herself in case the worst happened.
With a slight spasm, she looks directly at me, staring at me for a few seconds, before straightening up again.
That attitude, she had an emotional armor around her to withstand any punishment. Apparently, she knew I had feelings for her, but unfortunately, she only cared now.
What am I doing…
I entered the room, my eyes tired and my body cold. I'm not looking for a heroic speech or a perfect pardon for Lilia; this situation doesn't just affect me. If I wanted to forgive, I would gather the courage to do so. The problem is that the consequences affect everyone in this house. No one is obligated to forgive her.
I tried to show a smile, at least I wanted to show that I can help.
Lilia felt the wall of emotions crumble.
The room is dark, lit only by a candle. Lilia is sitting on the edge of the bed, her hands trembling on her folded apron, staring at the floor.
Seeing that I didn't say anything, she began:
“Has Zenith decided what to do yet? I’m afraid my departure order will come soon.” His voice comes out cold, empty, completely dead. “…Subaru-sama doesn’t need to get his hands dirty coming here. If either of them wants to expel me, they have the right to drive away this despicable creature that I am.”
Don't talk like that.
My heart aches knowing my trust has been betrayed, but that doesn't mean it's over. For someone who allowed a sinful archbishop another chance, what does it mean to view this situation with maturity involving a maid?
I interrupted her, sitting down beside her on the bed. Her hands froze instantly, and she remained still, staring at the floor. Neither of us dared to look the other in the eye.
It's still hard to think that I was under the illusion of being loved; it's a painful lump in my throat that prevents me from being kind. But beating my chest, I had to be strong. To compare death to something like this, it's nothing.
Looking at her chosen shoulders, I replied:
"Do you think I'm that superficial, Lilia?", my voice comes out hoarse.
We stare at each other, her eyes trembling, forming silent tears. She never allowed me to see her cry.
“Subaru-sama is too kind to understand. I sinned against Zenith-sama, I deceived a married man and gave myself away… I was weak, dishonorable. What I feel, what I allowed to happen, is an unforgivable mistake.” Even in this situation, she tried to smile. “I am not worthy of pity.”
Don't talk to me like that with that look in your eyes.
I approached, taking her shoulders and pulling her towards me. Now, our eyes met; there was no escaping this responsibility anymore. I swallowed my own pain, I had to stifle my own wounded ego to reach out to her, to see how Lilia was falling into an abyss I know so well…
This is my home, my place.
“A mistake…? You know what, Lilia? I'm an expert at making mistakes. At thinking I'm the center of the world, at ruining everything and then hating myself. Yes, I was an idiot, I thought… Well, I thought we could build something real, but I didn't even try. Seeing you destroying yourself like this because of a wrong choice hurts me more than my wounded ego.”
I chose the second option.
Lilia seemed shocked.
“You’re not alone in this house, Lilia. No fucking way am I going to let you carry this burden alone just because everyone decided to point the finger.” I squeezed her shoulder tightly; the pain was still there, but even so, I couldn’t abandon her. “The shitty world we live in is cruel enough already. If you fall, I’ll pick you up. Just like you brought me to this house, the first person to help me in this place, the one who made it possible for me to start without problems. You too can have your fresh start… I don’t guarantee ease, much less immediate peace, but start building your fresh start… Could you say start from scratch?”
“— — —”, Lilia softened.
“Don’t run away from responsibilities, but don’t think you can do everything alone. Face the problems and give them a good punch, just don’t go in headfirst because it might hurt… Start redeeming yourself by beginning with yourself. I know it’s difficult, I’m the one who judges myself the most.”
Laughing, I felt Lilia's shoulders tremble.
"Subaru... Subaru-sama..."
"Hang in the moment, and after the storm, put the pieces back together. I'll be there to deliver, but I won't be the one to fit them all together."
"Subaru... I'm sorry. Forgive me..."
I saw tears welling up on her face for the first time, and running down her cheeks.
I didn't hug her. I let go of her shoulders and stared at her while she cried for several minutes.
I'm not a teenager anymore, I'm an adult enough to know that there was a reason, and that it's not the end.
I pulled away, but her hand rested on mine, and then she threw her head down on my chest, crying over me.
I can spoil them at least this once.
I ran my hand through her hair while watching the crack.
Unfortunately, my heart is too soft.
But I would never say "I love you" to her.
Lilia POV
Everything I did, I knew what I was doing, I can't lie.
Ever since that boy with black hair and eyes walked into this house, I started looking at him as someone in need. Someone who needed quick help so he could then set off on a journey, leaving the Greyrat family, and my life, as it was.
However, the change happened when he learned our language, something that impresses me because of the speed, and also because of the way he wanted to express his gratitude.
Taking my hand, he looked into my eyes and said thank you, calling me by my name. I thought it was sweet, but I thought that was all… Then came the first request from Zenith's son:
"Natsuki-san is a very nice boy, can you let him stay a little longer?"
No sooner said than done, Zenith allowed Subaru to stay a little longer, but he didn't feel comfortable that way. I initially thought it was because our house was small, cramped for a family, but no, he said he felt uncomfortable not helping and just enjoying his stay.
That impression was the first one that stirred my heart. Not as a crush, but rather, with someone interesting. A kind boy, a strong personality, something I hadn't seen in a long time. He was like a child who had to grow up fast, but retained the best characteristics of a human being: Kindness.
So, the days passed, and Subaru started working alongside me. I thought I'd have to teach the boy how to do everything, but no, his skills appeared the moment he started working. According to him, he already does jobs like that for the same reason – he feels uncomfortable.
I wonder, how many places did he stay and work in to gain so much experience?
He never answered me directly, and I never heard anyone in the region talk about him; it was as if his existence seemed to have appeared out of nowhere.
A person that the world could not develop, he had to be created.
Then, my heart wavered for the second time. This time, I saw Subaru as a friend, a companion with whom, like Zenith, I could talk. I don't remember the last time I opened my mouth to speak about my thoughts, and also to listen to them from another person. The feeling of trust, I knew what it was only in the perspective of master and servant, but never in a friendship.
Looking back, I don't remember having many friends who stuck with me after everything; only my family was my closest relationship, and then the Greyrat family.
Subaru stayed at our house for longer and longer periods, and the closer he got to me, the more I felt my heart swaying in a strange direction.
One night, Paul and Zenith were having an intimate moment, and I couldn't resist any longer. As a mature woman, I also have needs, and that's how my eyes turned to Subaru.
A kind young man, endowed with good qualities, and someone I could trust.
I didn't think about the consequences, and then I started to approach him with a different perspective, and that's when my heart wavered for the second-to-last time: I saw Subaru as a chance to experience a new feeling, something that could ease this weight on my shoulders.
When I approached and kissed his lips, I was ready to surrender myself to him. I can't say that my soul would also belong to him, but my body already belonged to him at that moment… But Subaru was truly an even kinder boy.
He denied it, pushed me away, and said he wasn't ready for something like that. His words frustrated me; I understood his emotions, I knew I couldn't force anyone to like me and help me in that way.
But even so, I was frustrated.
I tried to continue our relationship the same way, but it was impossible. I was a child in an adult's body.
Every day, when my eyes met Subaru's, my chest tightened, and I felt the pain of frustration. I couldn't blame him for not accepting me that night, but I sensed a spark of anger towards him, something I only later realized I had nurtured until it became that way.
So, in the heat of the moment, when our relationship started to cool down, I looked at Paul and thought that this was my opportunity to get revenge.
Revenge myself for what? What had Subaru done to me?
When I surrendered my body to another person, I realized there was no going back, and little by little, my mindset began to change.
It started as a kind of invisible revenge, then it became something recurring, until it reached a point where I questioned whether it was right or not.
When the day came that I realized I had gone too far, I blamed myself, but it was too late.
I couldn't say that to anyone anymore, and the days that Subaru continued to treat me the same way were when I realized how disgusting I was.
I'm really just a child.
Then, my heart swayed one last time.
I really liked Subaru, but I only realized later that I couldn't keep up with him anymore…
I told everyone about my sins, about what would make this shirt fall apart, all because of a frustration I nurtured.
I thought it was time to accept my punishment, but something happened that prevented me from doing so.
Again, he appeared, being kind to me, and said the words I needed most: "You are not alone in this house."
I can't explain it, but I really wish I had met you when I was younger. I wonder if I would feel the same way about you then.
It's impossible to know, it will never happen.
Even though I was the focus of the problem, Subaru allowed me to cry on his chest.
After that moment, I went back to talk to Zenith, without fear, without worrying about the answer, because I knew I would have someone supporting me by my side. But that's when the shock was even greater.
"Thank you, Rudy, Lilia."
The boy I distanced myself from the most in this house was the one who decided where I would live and spend my time in this house that I love so much.
I'm truly evil, and even after everything, I haven't received any punishment.
Paul was the one who received the worst of the bad treatment, but he still remained the same, albeit with a huge breach of trust with Zenith.
Zenith didn't forgive me either, but she never showed hostility towards me or my unborn child. She said, in no uncertain terms, that it would be good for our future children to be friends. I couldn't thank her enough for being that woman; I will never betray her trust again, I put my life on this contract.
Regarding Rudeus, I couldn't thank him enough for his help. A strange child, that's what I always thought of him, he was the one who made the final decision regarding my staying; I owe him my life…
Well, Subaru… I think I really like him, but I wouldn't say the same about him for me. I'm not going to get frustrated or angry about it. I love him, I really do…
He never let go of my hand throughout the entire pregnancy, no one in this house ever did. Subaru worked twice as hard, taking care of me and Zenith twice as much, further increasing my love for him. I see his effort now, and I see the blessing of having someone like Subaru.
I am grateful for his existence..
When the time came, it was Subaru and Zenith who helped me with the delivery, and it was Subaru's hand that I held to endure the pain.
It was a hot day; I remember sweating quite a bit at the time. My glasses were resting beside the bed, while only Zenith and Subaru remained in the room.
Zenith had had her baby a few weeks ago, a beautiful girl with the same features as Paul; her name was Norn. Then it was my turn, and I wasn't prepared.
When it was all over and I saw my green-eyed girl, I sighed with relief.
"You were strong, Lilia-chan, now rest..."
"Stay... Stay here with..."
“Aisha. That was the name you wanted to give her, wasn’t it?” Smiling, he squeezed my hand. “I won’t let any child be sad in this house, and that includes their mother.”
“Subaru…”
"Even me included?"
"Of course, everyone here, even Rudy!"
After that, the two laughed, while Aisha fell asleep in my lap after crying a lot.
This child is a new stage in my life.
I think... I'll want another one.
I looked at Subaru.
Aisha, please, when you grow up, treat your half-brother Rudeus with affection, and also, know that Subaru is someone you can trust for life.
This time, I wasn't going to give up on him. Even if I don't deserve it, I'm going to make him mine.
Subaru POV
I placed my hand on the ground, feeling the mana flowing from my palm to the soil.
"...Modeling…"
I thought of something simple, and then:
"Transform!"
I created a small-scale statue of Patrasche.
Looking at the results, I sat down, feeling my mana low.
"I achieved…"
“N-nice, Baru-chi!”, Sylph raised his hands in celebration.
She had already finished it a week ago, and was at the advanced part, and even so, she celebrated with me. Is this some kind of abnormal evolution that children receive in this world? Where are my power-ups?!
"You're still behind, Subaru, but little by little you'll learn the ART of making puppets..."
It was Rudeus who said it, and who is also teaching me how to make puppets.
Several weeks passed, I don't remember exactly how many, but they were definitely the hardest weeks in the world.
After what happened with Lilia, Paul and I started working to save enough money for the children that were to come, and that's how Zenith was born.
The first girl, Norn, a beautiful baby. I'm not used to seeing children like that, evenI feltA tear wells up, witnessing the wonder of seeing life being created.
Then I turned my attention to Lilia, who had also given birth to a beautiful baby girl named Aisha. Her eyes had never been so kind as when she gazed at her daughter.
The next few days passed quickly.
Zenith focused all his attention on taking care of Norn, but this hardly happened for Aisha.
Lilia, even though she had just become a mother, wanted to continue working after learning that she would be staying at the house, but I refused and said that this task would be assigned to me. So, for weeks I worked as the sole butler, also taking care of the two mothers in the house.
I had help from Paul and Rudeus, but Paul focused his attention on working, staying late to help at the barrier. Rudeus, on the other hand, tried to sell the dolls he made, until he started making toys for children.
I thought it was time to show off my childhood skills, so I started sewing, making clothes, and also creating dolls with Rudeus.
Paul is good at taking care of Norn and Aisha, but I can proudly say that I make them both laugh and sleep more peacefully in my arms.
That's the difference in being a father of only girls! Even in my old world…
Lilia also seemed better. She started talking to me again, and whenever she could, she wanted to be by my side with Aisha, letting me hold her, take care of her, and even saying that I seemed like a great father.
Zenith used to stay with Paul, but she also started hanging out with me, saying that Norn was shy, but seemed more lively around me. I wonder if my social skills are contagious?! They're definitely going to be beautiful girls.
So, now I'm in the garden, training with Rudeus and using my knowledge of earth magic.
Regarding the progress made in the meantime, I managed to reach an intermediate level in fire and wind magic, as well as unlock new ways to use the authorities. In short, each one underwent some changes.
I realized that Vanitas can be used on objects that come into contact with me, changing their characteristics, but I need to spend a lot of mana to do so.
Kyōmei has started to increase her power, and now I can enhance my processing power when thinking, whether it's for myself or someone else. She greatly helps in strategizing in a short space of time, almost as if the world freezes while I think.
Sonne didn't change much because I didn't test it extensively. I don't have many names memorized; I have to remember as many as I can. But during testing, I used the name Petra, and I was able to perform fire magic more easily, but nothing with shadow or light magic.
I feel a connection to Yin magic, but nothing happens when I try to cast it. It's almost as if it's blocked, needing some kind of key to unlock it, similar to when you have a skill that requires points to use.
I just hope it's not an absurd price..
I wonder what Rudeus would say if he saw me with magic in an element that no one has any record of.
Regarding Cor Leonis, I can not only manage Mana but also fatigue, just like before. It seems that besides them gradually returning to their previous state, they seem to be improving, like a true skill. If there were levels in this world, I wonder what level I would be at…
The invisible providence has also changed; now I can use it with both hands, but the distance and strength decrease when I use it, as if there were a distribution of power between them for it to work. I'm still trying to make it appear in other parts of my body, but nothing happens.
Now about RbD… I haven't tried it and I don't want to, I'm not going to die.
I also improved my shield skills, and let my appearance change. Now I have longer hair, and my face is starting to become more defined. I feel more handsome! More confident! World, give me more!
Unfortunately, my tracksuit is getting too small, so I've started wearing it with the zipper open, but I still keep it among my new clothes as a memento. I'll also recreate the same design in the future when I go to Roa, but now is not the time.
Speaking of traveling… I don't know what to do. Now with Lilia and Zenith, I'm thinking of staying here, but I still need to continue my journey. If only I could at least help them both financially…
"Any problem, Baru?"
"Nothing, let's continue."
"You recover quickly... I'm still sad that my father won't accept Sylph and me at school."
"...School. Wait, you've never been to one?"
“My father said I would suffer for being strange. I think he’s afraid that if he sees me end the bullying, his parents will come and fight with him. Even if he wins, he doesn’t want any of that.”
"Is that all? I found it a bit harsh."
"He also said that the costs are high... Let's forget about that now, repeat the process with the puppet—"
“Subaru!”
I looked back. Lilia was holding Aisha in her hands.
"Well, I thought I'd wake up a little later today. I told you to rest."
"Norn can't sleep in Zenith's arms and I... Could you hold Aisha, please? Just this once."
"No problem! Deliver my favorite princess here, oooo cutie cutie cutie!"
"Aisha-chi..."
"...Do you want to hold on too, Sylph?"
"Oh no, I couldn't! I might end up dropping her!"
"It only knocks you down if you want it to, and it looks like you don't want it to, right? RIGHT? Or is Sylph the... Baby Killer?!?!?"
"N-n-no, don't even joke about that, Baru-chi! Please don't leave me with Aisha-chi!"
"Okay, it's up to you."
Picking up Aisha, I started teasing her, moving my fingers near her face, making faces and… When I realized it, Rudeus was staring at me with a “Seriously?” expression, while sighing, going back to practicing magic.
"Thank you, Subaru. I promise to reward you later."
Here she is again with those conversations…
"What? No need. Taking care of little Aisha like this is enough— cutie cutie cutie cutie."
"...You have a way with children, Subaru."
"Well, it's because I understand what children think, after all I'm a big kid myself, duh."
"...I'm going to help Norn."
Looking at me for a little while longer, she bowed and went back into the house, while I stayed with Aisha in the garden.
This was my life after all. It's a bit hectic depending on the day, but it's a great experience.
I can say that I'm improving my skills and learning more about the world, even if on a smaller scale, but it's already progress. I also intend to go to Roa and meet more people there—truly, my life in another world is starting to evolve after so long!
Regarding the problem between Lilia and me, I'm not thinking about it anymore. I don't know how she feels about me, and I'm not going to pursue it. If something ever changes between us, I'll let it happen naturally, and I won't force it, otherwise I'll be betraying my own will.
"You're more of a father to her than my own father, Baru."
"Hey, don't say that. Your father also likes to spend more time with Norn. I even think the two of them will grow taller than you, you dwarf."
“I will grow! More than you!”, stamping his foot on the ground, Rudeus smiled as he performed earth magic on the ground: “Rise!”
So he stood on a pillar taller than me, sitting down.
Aisha, sitting on my lap, smiled, waving her little hands, simply gazing at childishness at its finest. I forget that children always like to come out on top, just as I was like that for a while.
Kids are like that.
"At least do something to entertain us while you're up there."
"If I throw a fireball, it will hit Aisha, Baru."
"ARE YOU TRYING TO ROACH ME?!"
Laughing, Rudeus descended, extending his arm.
"Let me stay with Aisha for a while, I want to take care of her too."
It was a great initiative, but I also loved the fact that he wanted to take care of his half-sister. That's right, Rudy, take care of the younger ones, you're the older brother here! Try to be very caring and attentive, you pervert!
As he picked up Aisha and watched her, the boy smiled as he saw the baby touch his index finger…
“...Wow.”
I think kids act like that with younger ones. Unfortunately, I never had siblings, but I think I'd be super jealous if I did. I'd tell my parents I was always first in everything, and we'd have fights, then we'd make up and talk... Yeah, I think about what my parents are doing now.
Sitting on the grass, I looked at the blue sky. It's been a while since I last thought about them…
I can imagine how they are feeling.
If I rejected Hitogami's idea, would I return to my world...?
What the hell am I thinking?
I can NEVER associate my incrediblecountrywith that repulsive creature. I felt my hair stand on end just thinking about him, and I was in a bad mood.
I had put aside for a while the idea of going after him, of him being my main focus, but now remembering his name, I can only get even angrier…
I can't stay like this, there's no way I can reach him, I don't even know what he can do, or if it's possible to face him. All I know is that he doesn't live in the same place as me… But it's necessary to face a strange god, whatever… I just want to see Emilia back. All those people…
Their names and faces began to flash through my memory. I'm slowly starting to forget certain faces, and that scares me.
I touched my face, feeling a sadness. Why did I even imagine something like this now?
“Baru-chi?”
"Oh, Sylph, what happened? Don't tell me Rudy did something mean to you while you weren't looking."
“W-what? Sylph, protect me!”
"N-no, no. Rudy doesn't do things like that... Sometimes."
“WHAT?! SYLPH! MY REPUTATION… Ah… A-Aisha, don’t cry, oops, oops, sorry for shouting, look at the snowflakes, uppiiiii.”
He began to let some snow petals fall, obviously away from Aisha's face.
Laughing, I looked at Sylph again.
"Baru seemed quite thoughtful... Could it be... Is it because you're thinking of leaving?"
"How did you get to this point?! No, I don't intend to leave anytime soon, someone needs to take care of these children, even if money is very tight..."
"So, Baru-onii-chan will be staying longer? Please stay with us! Train with me and Rudy!"
“Nghh… Seeing you speak so radiantly warms my heart! Don’t worry, I won’t leave without a great and incredible reason, which almost doesn’t exist… Don’t worry, Sylph-chan. Here, come here.”
As I approached, the girl lowered her head slightly, while I pat her head. I find it amazing how her pointy ears start to twitch when I do that. KAWAAAIIII-DESU!
"Hey, don't steal Sylph from me!"
"He got jealous, well, know that she's mine now. I took her for myself!"
Getting up, I picked Sylph up and ran through the garden.”
"BASTARD! I'm fast than you!"
"Don't even think about running with Aisha in your hands! Sylph is mine now, muahaha!"
“B-Baru-onii-chan!”
"Yes, yes, repeat it again, Sylph-chan."
“B-Baru-onii-chan…”
"Wow, I need that recharge too, thanks!"
Putting her down, she nodded as she ran off to Rudeus. Even though I try to keep her away from Rudeus, she keeps following him, calling him Rudy everywhere, and during our training or school practices (yes, we study a lot, even I need it!), she's always near him.
Take good care of her, Rudeus. You only have one childhood friend! Or two, or three if you're really lucky…
"...Subaru."
Looking to the side, Paul waved his hand.
"Any problem? Don't tell me Laws got hurt again."
"That's not it... It's... about another subject."
"Tell me then."
The children's eyes, even Aisha's, turned to Paul.
"...It's quite serious, so let's go inside. Sylph-chan, sorry, but I'll take care of Uncle for a moment. Can you take Aisha, Subaru?"
"Okay...", going over to the two of them, I picked up the little one, who seemed to smile when she saw me.
Then I followed Paul, who seemed a little serious.
After what happened with Lilia, Paul had become more serious with Rudeus, and seemed awkward with me. I don't mind, I don't hold a grudge against him like that, even though he was one of the main reasons I was sad for a while, but the past is the past, it can't hold you back from your future.
He also became more agitated with the birth of Norn and Aisha. It seems that Norn is the one who likes him the most, while Aisha seems to prefer what I do, but in the end we both play with the children.
I always wondered how he felt after what he did to me, but it seems his way of dealing with me has changed quite a bit. He even tried to teach me how to practice the three main fencing styles in this world… But I refused, I'm not a swordsman, but even so he explained to me exactly how each one works, which impressed me when you hear about a style from someone who practices it, and is at an advanced level in all three, more than you read in a book.
"Rudy, we'll have a conversation later too. I read the letter you received from Roxy."
Rudeus almost fell to the side.
"WHAT? HOW DID YOU FIND THAT?!"
"It's just some of the content I saw..."
"Besides betraying his wife, he also betrays his son's trust."
"What are you muttering? Come in later and we'll talk about it, Rudy."
"Ehh, am I going to get in trouble?!"
“— — —”
Turning his face away, he went inside the house.
"...You're going to get a scolding, bleh, bleh! Be careful not to get punished."
Aisha repeated the same movement I had made of sticking out her tongue as we entered the house.
So, we went inside the house and that's how a conversation began that I thought would last a long time…
"Working outside the home?"
"That's what I thought. You're not skilled with a sword, but you understand Rudy quite well and you also know about magic... I feel like you'd get along well with him."
"But what does this have to do with working outside the home?"
“Explain it properly.” Zenith, tending to Norn nearby, kicked Paul in the leg.
"Don't assume things for Subaru, only he knows what's best for him." Lilia was calmer, giving a light kick.
“Nghh…. O-okay, I’ll explain… It’s just that you want to help Lilia, right? Help around the house… So I thought you could work for an acquaintance of mine.”
"An acquaintance of yours? Wait, so I'd have to leave this house? But what about the children, and Lilia… Ah…", covering my mouth, I looked at her.
Lilia's eyes widened, but she returned a warm smile.
"Don't worry, Subaru. It may not seem like it, but I know how to take good care of children, especially little Aisha."
"Still... No, how can I let Paul take care of you?"
"Are you insulting me, kid—"
Two more shots.
"Ugh... It's just that... You want your own house first, and then your family, right? That's what they told me..."
"...That is true."
I spoke with Laws further about this, but Paul must have overheard the conversation.
I like living with the Greyrat family, but I know I need to find my own place to live, or at least one nearby, so I've been looking for work. Unfortunately, what I do isn't enough to cover housing expenses, and the time I spend at all the jobs I have leaves me with nothing to look for work later. Now with two young children, that time has decreased even more, and I feel like it won't be long before I get burned out… But that doesn't mean I'll stop helping around the house.
Norn is adorable. She seems to like Paul quite a bit, but she cries a lot and disturbs Zenith's sleep, and ruins mine too. She doesn't need me, even though I want to take care of her as well. The girl has her father and mother nearby, as well as her older brother.
As for Aisha, I feel she's the most distant from the rest of the family. She doesn't cry, she's quite playful with me, and she's always calm around Aisha, never with Zenith. I don't know what kind of treatment she might receive if I leave here, and I'm afraid she'll become the sister who falls behind the older one.
I don't want sisters who fight or feel anger towards each other... Fights are okay, maybe a little hair-pulling, but they have to make up afterwards!
I feel insecure about a child that isn't even mine... Am I an idiot?
"Don't worry, Subaru. I'm serious. Aisha will always remember your face, just as I will always remind you of her every day."
"Why does it feel like I'm going to die? How scary— Wait… The job you mentioned, is it a bit far from here?"
"...I'd say visits would be difficult, but you can manage. But I imagine what people there would say about a grown man looking for work and taking care of other people's children—"
That was the final kick, before Paul covered his mouth to muffle his groans.
"It may not seem like it, but Paul's family is quite large. You'll have a great job, Subaru." Zenith's smile comforts me, but still doesn't convince me.
"...You want to have your own house and family, Subaru. So, working hard and saving money is the normal thing to do."
“But Lilia…”
"Nothing of "but" Just do what you want most, Subaru. I'll also send you letters every week."
"You guys... Ah, if it weren't for what I said, I'd feel like you were kicking me out."
Paul opened his mouth to say something, but the stares from the two women made him recoil.
"Never! You're part of the family, just like Lilia and Aisha are. No worries, Subaru, do what's best for you."
"I'm going to cry like this, guys..."
Putting my hand over my face, it was a huge decision that I couldn't just say yes or no to so quickly.
I looked at Paul to see what he thought. After all, he was the one who came up with this idea.
His green eyes said, "Go away and get your life together," but they also said, "I want to see you grow, brother!"
You're lucky I have the kindness syndrome, otherwise your face would be on the floor, Paul!
Sighing, I placed my hand on the table… Looking at Lilia, she seemed to accept the situation. Looking at Zenith, she seemed to want what was best for me.
Frankly, with so much love, I could drown.
"Give me a few days to think. Is that okay?"
"Whatever you want, Subaru," Lilia replied.
"Whenever you want to come back here, we'll welcome you with open arms," Zenith replied.
"...Do whatever you want." Finally, Paul received the K.O. kick, which made his knee hit the table. "ARRGHHH..."
The two children started crying, resulting in a crying epidemic.
Wow, this family is amazing.
I took Aisha in to look after along with Lilia, while I decided what to do about the future…
I just wonder what kind of service I would be participating in…
"Oh, and call Rudy, I have something to talk to him about."
Saying this, Paul sighed, running his hand over his forehead.
I was practicing with the shield in the garden. I'm not used to doing this here, but Paul told me that today was an important day.
I asked him why, and he simply replied that I would see when the time came.
Three days have passed since our conversation. Rudeus didn't tell me much about what happened between the two of them, but it seems he got something he wanted. Paul, on the other hand, seemed tense; perhaps it was about the school they discussed?
I recommend that he go to school, but I imagine that education in this world is paid for, not free, so the cost must be high. I am responsible enough to manage my own money, but what about a child? We don't have much money for things like that… Therefore, if Rudeus asks me for help, I'll agree to help as much as I can; children need to go to school.
I just feel sorry for Sylph; she seemed to have cried on his shoulder after saying he wanted to go to school. I imagine none of our families can afford to go to a place like that, much less a prestigious one like Rudeus had told me.
Ranoa Magic Academy... It's a very prestigious place that only the best in magic go to.
Given that Rudeus's magical abilities began to stagnate, I imagine that was his main motivation. He's a child, but he has an absurd level of intelligence; if I were Paul, I would give him all my support, but that doesn't seem to be the case…
I can only imagine what he's going to do now…
As I think, I glance at Paul beside me, who is practicing fencing with Rudeus. It's something that started not long ago, but it's interesting to see how Rudeus, a skilled magician, has such poor footwork techniques; even Paul praises me in combat, but that doesn't happen with Rudeus.
Even so, I think in a serious fight, he would have trouble if he used his magic to the fullest. Now, on my side, if I used everything I could, he wouldn't stand a chance…
Wait, what am I imagining, a fight with a child—
“Oh…”
Following Paul's surprised voice, I looked in the direction that had caught his attention, only to see a carriage stopping at the entrance of the house.
I stopped my training immediately.
Visitors at this hour? Don't tell me it's Paul's family, could it be that he mentioned my job?!
Paul's family, his large family actually, is quite influential in a certain part of this world. Even though he practically disowned them to run away and stay with Zenith in a country house, I imagine he still has contact with his family, and that must be why this visit.
I wonder how quickly he got me a job, and how much he's going to pay me… Wait, what am I imagining? I don't even know if that's it.
"Sorry, Rudy."
Hearing the clash of swords, I only saw Paul receive a jet of water in the chest, while he struck the boy hard in the neck with his sword, knocking him unconscious.
Wait, what is that?!
"Paul, why?! Rudy could end up getting hurt this way—"
Then I felt something inside me, a warning.
Raising my shield, I didn't aim the point directly at Paul, but rather at the person who got out of the carriage.
"It's been a while, Ghislaine."
“...Ghislaine?”
I've never heard that name, or if I have, I was ignorant enough not to remember anything.
Finally seeing her appear, a woman taller than me, with dark skin and a huge scar on her stomach, made my instincts shudder, obviously telling me that this woman was dangerous… It's true, I can't ignore her feline features, with ears perched atop her head and a thin tail, in addition to her tight and quite revealing clothes, as if she came straight out of a gacha game.
Who is this woman…
Zenith and Lilia appeared soon after. Apparently, it doesn't seem to be a problem.
Letting the shield fall, I listened to some of what they were saying.
They seemed to know each other quite well. Could it be something involving Zenith and Paul's old party? I remember them mentioning a fierce woman in the middle of it, so it must be Ghislaine… But if that's the case, why is she here?
Could there be a serious problem?
"Take good care of Rudy, okay?"
“I'll try.”
The woman's gruff voice completed his "tough guy" persona. I don't know what they mean by that, but Lilia approached, a look of sorrow in her eyes.
"Subaru, take care."
"Be okay? Of course I'll be okay, especially to love little Aisha, ooh, so cute—"
"Is this the boy?"
Again, that heavy instinct.
Kicking the ground, I distanced myself from Ghislaine. I looked at Lilia, searching for some trouble in her eyes, but… She seemed worried, but I wondered about what.
So, only by seeing the situation I'm in did I finally understand.
Am I going to fight?!
"That wretched Paul... Sorry, I can't say this with children around. That miserable Paul told me you're skilled enough."
"It depends on how much he meant to say, but what does it matter?"
“Hm.”
Drawing her sword, she simply pointed it forward, flexing her muscles.
There it is, the fight I imagined!
Raising my shield, I stomped my foot on the ground, causing a gauntlet of earth to appear in my hand. Yes, a gauntlet!
It wasn't the best quality, after all it was made of earth, but using Vanitas in the middle... I can alter its consistency to make it even harder, turning my hand into almost a block of concrete, but without worrying about the weight.
"Magic. Shield. Weak."
Is that all you have to say?!
I don't know what level of strength this world has, but so far, Paul is the most incredible thing I've seen here…
I looked at him for help, but he seemed to be gripping his wooden sword tightly. Don't tell me he intends to attack me too if I dodge?!
Not only that, she has a real sword, I'll die if she hits me!
Ghislaine stared at me for a while longer, before taking one, two, three steps. She began to approach.
I stepped back, jumped over the stone fence to get away from the people, and raised my shield, preparing to attack, but…
With a surge of momentum, she threw the force into her feet and lunged at me with the blunt side of her sword. It all happened so fast that I saw my death in flashes, but—
“SONNE, GARFIEL TINZEL”
I let my power slip away, but my fear of getting hurt and dying was greater than my fear of keeping secrets. So, at that very moment, I stomped my foot on the ground, and caused the terrain to shift.
Ghislaine didn't seem to notice, but she slowed her run, which allowed me to land the first blow:
“OOOOOSHHAAA!”
I landed a perfect punch with the gauntlet, but it was blocked by his sword.
We spun around at the moment of the strike, switching positions. I didn't even have time to breathe, and she lunged forward again, with the same serious expression as always.
I couldn't spend all my mana on Garfiel's abilities, so I had to improvise.
I slammed my shield against my gauntlet, and instantly, like a rocket, I ejected the gauntlet from my hand and hurled it like a projectile toward Ghislaine. I call that a hand rocket Mark 2! All using earth magic and, by my perfect authority, invisible providence, which ejected the gauntlet directly into Ghislaine.
For the first time, she seemed to show some emotion, raising an eyebrow slightly as she defended again and, at the same moment, cut the gauntlet in half, but what she didn't expect was that—
“Ice Prison!”
I glided closer to her as if walking on ice, and where her scar was on her stomach, I froze from her torso down in the blink of an eye.
She showed no reaction.
I didn't want to hit a woman, but the fight was real, it was serious, so I decided to do what I had in my arsenal:
"Invisible Providence! Gauntlet of Earth! Vanitas!"
The unseen providence appeared again in my other hand, the same one that launched Ice Prison, striking Ghislaine squarely in the stomach with a new gauntlet, while I adjusted its consistency to enhance the impact. I even heard a crack, perhaps a bone breaking? Forgive me, woman, but I'm in a matter of life or death!
She was thrown back, placing her hand on her stomach. I could see my bruise protruding over her old scar. Was that a good move?
"Mediocre."
Was that a compliment? Thank you Garfiel, without you, I wouldn't have the strength to keep up the pace!
I prepared myself again for the next attack—
"She?"
My legs gave way, have I reached my mana limit?!
Forcing myself to stay on my feet, I tried using Garfiel's ability to alleviate my fatigue while fighting on the ground, but it doesn't seem to work very well. D.P.s don't seem to connect in this world with normal abilities, unlike the authorities.
"Let's put an end to this."
"I SAY THE SAME!"
I ran in a straight line.
Ghislaine seemed to twist the sword to the side of the blade— Is she going all in?!
I felt a little scared again, but now I knew how far I had come.
I tried to use everything I had as a final attack. I reinforced my hand with Vanita and then made an earth whip appear in my hand, changing its consistency with water and Vanita to make it malleable but still durable.
So, the moment Ghislaine pointed her gun at me, I threw my whip into her hand, trapping her, and making my last spell slot:
“Freeze!”
The whip froze completely, trapping the beast woman's hands, while I prepared for another punch, this time with the tip of the shield, using whatever I could grab onto my body to create an ice point and strike her stomach again, so I could—
"You're actually pretty good-looking, mediocre."
“HUH?!”
Ghislaine simply moved her hand and broke the ice. Her other hand gripped the whip and pulled me with all her might, while striking me on the head with the hilt of her sword, knocking me out instantly…
I really need to train more, but what can I do with one of the strongest ones?
I fell asleep while looking up, seeing a small smile on the wild woman's face.
You… furry monster…
I want a rematch in the future.
When I woke up, I felt like something was wrapped around my body.
Ropes?
I tried to move, and even use magic, but my energy was depleted.
"Don't move, you'll hurt yourself even more."
I felt something hard on my head; apparently I bled while I was unconscious, and she didn't even bother to clean it up.
I was sitting facing her, unlike Rudeus, who was tied up on the ground.
That's right, Rudeus is here!
"What is that?"
"A carriage."
I mean, what happened?!
"A fight. You lost."
"Look, I just want to know the reason. Did Paul send it?"
"Paul doesn't boss anyone around. But yes, he was the one who called me."
"You're very straightforward... Ghislaine?"
"It has to be... Otherwise some people won't understand, mediocre."
"Call me Subaru now, where are we going?"
"...To meet the young lady."
"Can I ask you anything else?"
“A letter. I can’t read.” Pulling it from her coat, she handed me a letter…
"My hands are not free."
“— — —”
"It's impossible to read like that."
"I'm holding this up in front of you, Subaru. Can you read it like this? Or don't you know how either?"
This woman irritates me, but not in a bad way.
Sure, I'm impressed by her ignorance and lack of tact in some things, but she's quite strong, the classic bruiser who only knows how to fight, but otherwise, knows nothing. At least this time she's a fierce woman with very little clothing.
It's a good thing it's not me from the past, otherwise I'd be storing every image in my head...
"Wouldn't it be good to wake Rudy up?"
"Paul said this letter is for you, the red one is from that boy."
“I understand, different letters then. Let's see…
Subaru, if you're reading this letter, which is probably what's happening, I hope you understand that I didn't do this on purpose, and that it was all your fault that you received this treatment…"What the hell is he talking about?"
"He asked me to test you, and that's what I did."
"Don't tell me that... Wait, let me keep reading..."
You can blame me for wanting her to knock you out, but it was the only option I could think of instead of trying to convince you to accept this service. So it was actually a reason to work, you bastard!”
"Is all of this written in the letter?"
"No, no, it's just me cursing Paul, don't worry, kitty."
"Kitty?"
“Continuing… Ghislaine couldn't explain why her brain was surely gone along with that mass of biceps and muscles, so I'm writing this letter.”
"What did he say?!"
"Calm down, calm down! It's just a letter, okay? If you want to hit him, I'll help you, but not now..."
“...Hm.”
“This woman is a Sword King; when it comes to a blade, you won't find a better teacher than her outside the Sword Sanctuary. Believe me, she's a real beast in many situations, even I'm at a disadvantage—”
Except in bed.
I read that part in my head. Paul, I swear, when I get back, I'm going to break your face.
"Now, let's get on with your work. You'll be Rudy's bodyguard, and you'll also help Ghislaine by protecting the young lady. Help with any requests they make, and teach them what you know, especially what you do with your hands and the mayonnaise. I can't deny it, it's delicious. You'll do well. The place you're going is Roa, the very city you wanted to visit. I'm clever!"
"Go fuck yourself, Paul."
"Mayonnaise?"
"I'll show you what I can do, Ghis-chi."
“Ghis-chi…”
She's strong, but she looks like a child! Paul, you bastard, you took advantage of that?!
"Finally, this mass of muscles works as a bodyguard, so get along with her; she'll be your second left hand, or right if you need her. Rudeus will teach you most of the problems, but teach her to have… feelings?" She wants to meet a partner who will also help her. It's a request that surprised me, but it's perfect for you. So, help Rudy—
Wait, did he write "partner"?
"A partner. I thought he had something incredible to offer, so I asked to have him with me."
"I hope it's not for something bad, I'm good at many things, Ghis-chi, but I'm mediocre at combat."
"So I was right..."
Closing her one eye, I became curious about what she was hiding under the eye patch, but above all…
"I don't want to rush things, since this is almost like a job interview, but how much does Ghis-chi earn?"
"Two Asurano gold coins per month."
Holy shit, that's a lot of money!
"Can I know how much I will receive?"
“— — —”
"Don't you know?"
“...No,” her ears twitched. “I don’t know.”
"Cool, a job with anonymous pay, I like it... Can you take this rope off me?"
At that moment, she pulled out the sword and ripped it from my body. I thought it was to keep me handcuffed, but was there a change of plans?
"Now, the end of the letter…"Rudy will spend five years at this young woman's house teaching her, but you, on the other hand, decide when you want to return. However, I recommend you don't leave, otherwise you'll lose trust, honor, and many other things I don't care about, as well as money. You'll receive four Asurano silver coins per month, two more than Rudy, so you can show off to him.
I'm still learning about money, isn't that quite a lot?”
"I earn more than you, so it must be worse."
"Thanks for nothing..."Rudeus will receive the biggest reward, but you'll also get something interesting if you stay until the end…”
I stopped reading the letter.
"Wow... A house? A paid-off house?"
"Congratulations."
"Thank you, Ghis-chi— It's true, your stomach still hurts?!"
"A little."
Throwing the card aside, I crouched down in front of her, healing the wound I had caused.
"Stay still, let me heal you."
"It tickles."
"You're not much of a talker, you remind me of a self-response puppet... Well, it seems like Paul likes you."
"Why do you say that?"
"...Nothing in particular."
PS: Rudeus gets the young lady, I get the mountain of muscles, and you get to clean the floor.
Son of a bitch.
"I hope we get along well, Ghis-chi. I'm quite restless."
"Unless you're like Paul, do whatever you want."
"Lots of freedom!"
"After finishing healing, I stood up and saw Rudeus beginning to wake up."
“I’d better explain to him what’s going to happen. He can read, so leave the letter with him— Besides… My full name is Subaru Natsuki, it’s a pleasure to be your partner, Ghislaine!”
My forced labor finally begins now.
Meanwhile, elsewhere…
The woman didn't know why she was imprisoned. Her hands, shackled by perfect magic, prevented her from using her abilities.
Her head was a mess, she didn't even know her own name, but one feeling never left her chest: She had to find her master.
Her purpose no longer existed here, so she could look for it wherever she wanted, but now, there was nothing she could do.
Looking up, she observed the starry sky, the same sky that had accompanied her many times.
Atop a tower the doesn't know—one she was never asked to tend—Shaula is imprisoned, sealed with the very magic of this world to prevent her from meeting the person she loves most.
"...Master."
Her eyes closed as the cloud passed across the moon, abandoning the light that had bathed her body.
She no longer possessed magic, she no longer had a resilient body; she was just a normal girl, something she had never been interested in.
But now, she had no way to escape, nothing she could do but watch what lay ahead, once again trapped by something she couldn't break free from, not with words, but with firm shackles.
Shaula was sealed away, lost, alone in this world she had never seen, a result of the world not allowing the existence that had once vanished.
