Chapter Text
Fluttershy
I didn't mean to tense up when Rainbow Dash's arm was around me. I've never done that before in all the years I've been friends with her. But lately, whenever I see her, my heart starts to beat faster and I feel something in my stomach. This is so unexplainable. This has been happening to me all throughout the week I've seen her, and it's driving me mad. And I've never been driven mad. I'm a calm, organized, careful person. So why do I feel this way towards my best friend, whom I'm supposed to and do trust with my life?
These thoughts are along the line of what I wrote in my diary this morning when I was running late, and what's been running through my head the whole morning. I'm still lost in thought when I feel a tap on my shoulder.
"Darling, are you alright?" Rarity asks me, blue eyes shining with concern. "You've barely eaten." I nod my head and smile, playing with my hair.
"I worry bout ya' Sugarcube. Don't hide nothin too big from us, alright?" Applejack takes a crunch out of her apple to emphasize her point.
"Thank you, but I really am okay," I respond in a small voice. Even though I love my friends, I talk the most around Rainbow Dash. "Has anyone seen Rainbow?" All eyes turn to Twilight, who last had a class with her.
"No, Pinkie, eating whipped cream is not a good lunch," Realizing her friends were looking at her for answers, she shrugged. "She told me she was going to be late." Then she turned back to arguing with Pinkie. Just then, Rainbow Dash came bursting through the cafeteria doors and ran to us.
"Sorry guys- I was-ughhhhh." She sat at the empty seat next to me and Twilight with a loud thump of her bag and winked at me. I blushed, without meaning to. What was up with me today?
"Oh dear." Rarity looks at me concerningly.
"Looks like you were dashin'," Applejack chuckles at her joke.
"What held you up?" Twilight asked, not looking up from her book.
"Sorry guys, it's a secret." After just gasping for breath, Rainbow Dash looks and sounds fine. Nonchalant even. Sexy even. My eyes widened in horror. Had I actually just thought that about my best friend? What kind of sick person was I? Rainbow Dash put her arm around my chair and stroked my hair. I shut my eyes and tried to ignore that feeling and Rainbow came closer to my face.
"So, you gonna tell me why you ran late today?" She smirks. She doesn't need to whisper; everyone else at the table is talking too loud to hear.
"Not until you tell me why you were late just now." I whisper back.
She shakes her head at me and takes a loud sip of her protein shake. She throws her head back and I watch as her throat moves as she takes a sip. Her hair is so beautiful. I can't think of many people who can pull off dying their hair, but Rainbow pulls it off suprisingly well. She catches me staring out the corner of her eyes and giggles and I look away and blush. Suddenly, she straightens her back from leaning in her chair and puts down her protein shake. She takes the plastic knife and fork and cuts a piece of my chicken cutlet for me.
"Say ahhh." I reluctantly open my mouth and let her feed me a piece.
"There's a good girl." I blush even more when she says that. Surely she didn't mean it like that, right? The others have all turned to stare at us now, all smiling or smirking.
"What are you all staring at?" Rainbow asks, slightly miffed.
"Oh, nothing dear." Rarity looks down at her plate, still with a little smile. They all exchange a knowing glance.
"What's going on?" Rainbow looks at me and then the rest of the girls.
"Well, I- or we just wanted to ask if you two are..." Twilight manages to spit out.
"Are what?" Rainbow and I say together.
"If you are..." Twilight seems embarrassed to even speak of it.
"Come on girl, spit it out." Applejack has another toothpick in her mouth.
"Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, you two are like my bestest friends but... are you two like together?" Pinkie blurts out.
Rainbow Dash
"PINKIE!" The rest of the girls say in unison, causing many heads to stare. I don't even hear them yelling; had it really been that obvious? Obviously I liked Fluttershy, but I could never admit that. It's much better not saying anything, especially if I don't want to lose Fluttershy. It's sooooo much better just keeping my feelings to myself. I look over to her. She's red, but I'm probably redder. We both start stuttering at the same time.
"Wha- wha- what would make you believe that?" My eyebrows are furrowed, and I hope the others can't smell my fear.
"Why would you say that?" I can almost see her fragile heart breaking. It hurts me to see her hurting, but it just proves my point. She obviously doesn't like me like I like her.
"Well," Applejack starts off, but Rarity swats her shoulder and takes the mic.
"Well, we've just been observing that you two are very close, that's all. I'm sorry if we made things awkward, but we just had to know." My head is spinning.
"No, no no. Fluttershy and I don't like each other, right? She's like, my best friend." I awkwardly elbow her, trying to get her laughing, but she's taking the serious approach.
"Of course we're not dating," She shakes her head at the ground and crosses her arms. "We've been best friends for so many years, it would be so weird. And no offense, but I would never date someone like Rainbow." Ouch. That hurt. She usually would call me Dashie. Well, I guess I know how she feels about me. The other girls look surprised for some reason, as if they thought I was actually gonna confess. I would never confess ever in my life that I like my best friend in the whole world. Absolutely under no circumstances.
Pinkie senses the tension. "Ok guys I have so many ideas for homecoming! Since I'm on the party planning committee this year, I'm gonna make this the best homecoming ever!" Pinkie sure loves everything involving parties. It was a good distraction though, because no one is talking about me or Fluttershy anymore. However, out of the corner of my eye, I notice Fluttershy standing up and walking away towards the bathrooms. I suppress the urge to go after her; the rest of the girls will probably become even more suspicious. I decide to talk to her afterschool. Applejack pulls me aside in the midst of the others talking.
"You sure you don't like' er?" Applejack looks at me with her stupid condescending eyes. They're brown, but a different shade of brown than Fluttershy's.
"Yea I'm sure. What makes you so confident? You girls pulled that theory out your behinds," I turn away, trying to hide my reddening face. "And why do you wanna know anyway?" Deflecting is all I know how to do in this situation.
"Now what if I tolt you I had a little crush on Fluttershy?"
