Chapter Text
Late that night in the Fire Nation Palace, after the campfire had burned down to glowing red embers, Sokka and Aang disappeared down the shadowy corridors to raid the royal kitchens for late-night snacks. Katara and Suki remained on the cool marble veranda, winding down under the silver moonlight as they folded spare blankets and tidied up the seating cushions.
Katara let out a quiet sigh, still shaking her head with a soft chuckle over Toph’s earlier checklist. "I mean, honest, direct, richer than a Beifong, and somehow keeps her relaxed? Good luck to Toph. She’s looking for a mythical creature. That guy doesn't exist!"
Suki didn't even look up from the heavy wool blanket she was folding into neat quarters. She simply let out a slow, smooth hum, a tiny, dangerous little smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
"Oh, he exists," Suki said casually, smoothing down the corner of the fabric. "In fact, I'm so sure of it that I'm willing to put money on it right now."
Katara stopped mid-fold, blinking in total disbelief. "Wait, what? You actually think there’s someone out there who hits every single one of those absurd points?"
Suki finally looked up, her blue eyes gleaming with absolute, unshakeable confidence in the pale light. She leaned in just a fraction, keeping her voice low so it wouldn't carry into the quiet courtyard.
"Katara, I don't just think it—I'd bet my entire month's wage as Captain of the Kyoshi Warriors on it," Suki murmured, her tone laced with quiet amusement. "Not only does he exist, but when the time comes, it’s going to make complete and total sense. And when it happens, you owe me a very expensive bottle of Fire Nation wine."
Katara laughed, shaking her head, convinced Suki was just playing a cheeky, impossible game. "You're on! But you are going to lose that money, Suki."

Over a decade had passed, sweeping away the quiet evenings of their youth and replacing them with the bustling hum of a new era. The secret was no longer a secret—at least not to the tiny inner circle who knew that the Fire Lord and the Chief of Police were deeply, inextricably bound together behind closed doors.
Outside the tall mahogany doors of the Republic City Council chamber, the late afternoon light streamed through grand stained-glass windows, casting long crimson and gold shafts across the marble floor. Suki stood posted in full security detail, her arms crossed behind her back, watchful and precise.
Down the wide corridor, heavy footfalls echoed against the stone. Zuko, clad in his formal dragon-embroidered robes, looked thoroughly drained after an eight-hour trade summit. Toph, encased in her dark, formidable metalbending armor, marched up from the lower precinct level, her heavy metal suit clanking rhythmically with every step.
Without a word of formal greeting, Toph reached out as soon as she closed the distance, snagging Zuko by his heavy golden collar and dragging him down to her level.
"You look like a deflated komodo-rhino, Sparky," she murmured dryly.
Snapping or pulling rank wasn't even a thought in Zuko's mind. The tension instantly drained from his shoulders, a soft, tired laugh escaping his chest as he leaned his forehead against hers for a fleeting, sacred second. "Your speech at the council was terrible, Beifong."
Toph smirked—that exact, soft, relaxed smirk Suki remembered from over a decade ago—and shoved his shoulder playfully. "Liar. It was brilliant."
"I don't lie," Zuko replied smoothly, his tone laced with that quiet, dry humor only she ever got to hear. "And you know it."
From her post by the door, Suki watched as the Fire Lord unobtrusively shifted his stance, placing his broad, armored frame between Toph and the draft coming off the bay windows, sheltering her from the chill.
Suki adjusted the strap of her gauntlet, letting out a soft, satisfied exhale. A tiny, knowing grin finally broke through her disciplined guard, and in a voice so low it dissolved into the quiet expanse of the hallway, she whispered to herself:
"See... told ya."
