Chapter Text
Rutile’s hand rests against Padparadscha’s, their fingers easily tangling together as Rutile manages to admit that they are happy to see Padparadscha. There was never any doubt in their mind, but it’s always fun to make Rutile admit it out loud, to watch the soft hint of pink spread across their cheeks as they pretend not to be affected by Padparadscha’s gentle teasing. These small, shared moments when Rutile is being so awkwardly honest and open are among Padparadscha’s most treasured memories.
A comfortable silence envelops the room as Rutile slips into sleep and Padparadscha is content to stay awake for a while longer, focusing on the steady sound of Rutile’s breathing. It is not often that they can observe Rutile completely relaxed and unguarded like this and Padparadscha is never one to let an opportunity go to waste.
Propping themself up on one elbow, Padparadscha pulls their other hand free in order to brush back Rutile’s hair. Rutile looks positively lovely in sleep, though Padparadscha can still see the lasting hints of long nights and lack of sleep. They let their touch linger, smoothing out minor creases and tracing over soft skin with the tips of their fingers as if committing each new detail to memory. So many things can change when they are apart and Padparadscha is not about to let anything slip past their notice.
Beautiful.
It is always the first word to come to mind whenever Padparadscha looks at Rutile. Rutile makes every effort to brush aside their compliments and point out their bias but Padparadscha pays it no mind, well aware of just how wonderful Rutile is even if they cannot see it for themself. They are warm and loving and talented in so many ways and Padparadscha does not mind reminding them whenever possible.
Padparadscha leans forward, placing a soft kiss to Rutile’s cheek, lips murmuring across smooth skin as they whisper often repeated words. They allow themself a moment to indulge, smiling when they notice the way Rutile’s nose wrinkles in displeasure. Almost as if they know exactly what Padparadscha is doing. They never were very good at getting things past Rutile, not that it has ever done much to deter them in the past.
Laying down again, they easily settle behind Rutile, placing one arm around their waist and humming softly against their hair. Even though they are not truly tired, it would be so easy for Padparadscha to close their eyes and drift off to the familiar sound of Rutile’s heartbeat. It soothes them in a way that nothing else can.
