Chapter Text

The walk back to the dorms was stale. The class dragged their feet monotonously.

A breath of chilled air washed over their faces as they entered the common room. The dorms weren’t far from the main campus, but the short walk in the heat had made them slightly sweaty.

Midoriya sighed and flung himself onto one of the couches. None of his classmates left to go to their rooms, instead seating themselves on couches or leaning against the wall. Moments passed by in silence. Some glanced at one another, waiting for someone to speak.

Bakugou, who had been leaning on a wall closest to the elevators, broke the silence. Squaring his shoulders, he spoke in a bold voice that rang through the room. “I’m going. A chance to learn freakin’ magic? No way in hell I’m going to miss that shit.”

“But Bakugou!” Uraraka fiddled with her skirt and glanced up. “It’s going to be like going to a different world! There’s so much that could go wrong, even with all the precautions; and if we mess up we won’t get another chance!”

Bakugou shrugged. “Don’t fuckin’ care. Are you aiming to be a hero or not? There’s always risks. There’s always pressure.” Having said his piece, he turned around.

Todoroki, who was beside Bakugou also turned around. “Even something like this will help us grow.” He spoke quietly but with firmness and walked away from the room, mind made up. Midoriya had a feeling that both Bakugou and Todoroki had decided from the start that they were going.

Midoriya smiled. Honestly, he had too. They were alike in that manner.

Kirishima, who had looked lost in thought on their way to the dorms, smiled as though everything suddenly made sense. The crease in his brow smoothened out and he clapped Bakugou on the back. “You said it, my dude! I’ll go to! Wanna come to my room to work out?”

Bakugou made a huffing noise and Kirishima nodded. “Right, right,” Kirishima prattled on, swinging a hand around Bakugou’s shoulder. After letting the contact last for a few prolonged seconds, Bakugou swatted Kirishima. “Don’t fuckin’ touch me!”

Kirishima let go and went to the elevators, Bakugou entering as well with his hands in his pockets, posture slouched low.

“I agree with Kaachan, I think we are overthinking this.” Midoriya announced, eyes still trained on the ceiling. “This knowledge on magic could help us save people, or even defeat villains. Besides, we will be together, right? We can tackle this. We can do this.”

Uraraka giggled and hit Midoriya’s shoulder with newfound zeal. “They picked us for the task, right? You’re right, in times like these we can’t afford to start getting all negative.” Letting out a power-up scream, Uraraka slapped her cheeks. “Right! I’m going too!”

“As am I,” Iida pushed up his glasses. “If we are responsible for the downfall of the wizards, it is our duty to learn of them and make amends! They will not be forgotten.”

“A school trip to the past! This is why U.A is G-R-E-A-T!” Ashido jumped in the air.

Asui croaked. “Plus Ultra?”

Midoriya snorted. “Plus Ultra!” They all replied in unison.

The room was warm, but Midoriya didn’t think it was the heat.

When Aizawa arrived at homeroom the next morning, he was greeted with the steeled faces of his students. Literally in Kirishima’s case. Rubbing his eyes, he pulled out his phone, dialing. “Looks like all of them want to go, just like you said. They’re decisive like that. Comes from being in danger too much. Yes, yes, okay. I’ll send them later.”

Switching off his phone, Aizawa addressed the class. “I can see it in your faces. You’re all ready for this. While we don’t know much about wizards, or their magic, what we do know, I’ll teach you; about The Boy who Lived and another man who the record calls Voldemort, but mentions of him go under several aliases.”

The lessons proceeded with basic facts. The supposed start date of the wizarding war, the end date. About The Boy who Lived, his true name lost in history. He’d been only a student at the time, yet played a key role in the battle, although it was never explained exactly what he did. The Boy who Lived’s friends, a brilliant witch and a thoughtful man, who journeyed and persevered. There were mentions of Death Eaters, but once again, not much was known about them or their agenda. Likewise, a figured, presumed to be a powerful wizard, Dumbledore, was mentioned in passing in a few surviving texts.

“That’s all we know,” Aizawa picked his ear and then went for his sleeping bag. “Class over. We leave to the past in two days. Oh, and-” he glanced at Bakugou and Midoriya, “they want to see you two in the office.”

Midoriya gulped and looked at Bakugou, who stood up to leave the room. Following behind, they walked to the office in crackling silence, but not necessary volatile. Midoriya kept his eyes on the floor, making sure not to mutter the information on the wizarding community that he was still trying to consolidate in his head.

“Young Midoriya, young Bakugou.” All Might held a hand up in salute outside the office. “There are things that we must speak about.”

“About One for All and All for One, or something?” Bakugou spat.

“Yes,” All Might replied with a thumbs up. “You are a quick study. Anyhow, as you probably guessed, All for One is related to the downfall of the wizarding community. What I am going to tell you right now is the truth within the truth.”

“The truth within the truth,” Midoriya spoke in awe. Bakugou rolled his eyes.

All Might scratched his neck and then began his explanation. “All for One was the one responsible for the genocide of the wizards. He had the power to take away quirks, but not magic. Thus, the wizards posed a threat to him. So, he got rid of them, but not without, we think, taking away their secrets. Particularly, about immortality. Part of this mission is to recover lost knowledge about magic, but for you two, it is more than that. We want you to learn about dark magic, which may lead you close to danger and Voldemort. We are sending you to the year 1995, since that is when we have the most Death Eater journals.”

“He could have taught Shigaraki magic!” Midoriya’s eyes went wide. “That’s dangerous.”

“Indeed,” All Might hummed, “Which is why it is integral for you two boys to take this mission.”

Midoriya pulled his hand into a fist over his heart. “I understand, we won’t let you down!”

“I was going to look into black magic either way. That shit sounds powerful.” Bakugou shrugged and walked off.

All Might stared apprehensively at Bakugou’s back. “That boy…”

Midoriya laughed.

On the day they were leaving for the past, Replicate was brought in. He was a toothy man, built like a boulder, with deep eyes that commanded attention. “Just your local criminal charged with life in prison.” He had guffawed at the stares he received. “Only half my life if I do this job though!”

“With surveillance,” Aizawa clarified.

Replicate waved his hand dismissively, which seemed to irritate Aizawa. “Potato Tomato, whatever; not rotting in jail.”

Ignoring the prisoner, Aizawa clapped his hands together. “We have another student coming in from another class. Why? His quirk is useful. He’s been briefed and agreed.”

Midoriya felt a smile break out on his face when he saw the man in question walk into the class. It was Shinsou. He kept his eyes downcast as he walked into the class, looking anywhere but at the students of the hero course, and chose a desk. Midoriya waved to him, but he looked away.

“No, no, no!” Mineta shook his head. “We can’t have two purple people! He’s taking away my look!”

“Alright you maggots!” Replicate slammed his large hand on the desk. “I’m gonna explain my quirk to you time travelers. I can create bodies. Replicate anybody I touch. Can also modify them a bit. No tails, pink alien skin, or whatever.”

Yaoyorozu put her hand up. “Mamoru said that we can use our quirks when in soul form, however, quirks like mine that use my body, well, I am unable to use it until you provide me a body. Do you not require organic substances to create a body?” Momo put her hand down, her actions curt and clean.

“Smart missy!” Replicate whistled. “I don’t use organic matter. I use years of my life. I get younger when I use my quirk. You don’t know how LONG the heroes took to get that one! It’s why I was a free serial killer for so long!”

Midoriya bit his tongue at the words serial killer. They really were using extreme people and extreme quirks for this.

“You are going to alter our bodies?” Tokoyami fluffed his feathers and touched his beak. “Will you be taking liberties with me?”

Replicate laughed. “Wait and see, bird boy, wait and see!”

Tokoyami stayed quiet, but Midoriya could see that he was offended by the intimidating spreading of his feathers. Midoriya wondered what kind of face they would give him.

Mamoru limped into the classroom, seemingly apprehensive about working with Replicate. “A-are you all ready?”

Midoriya crossed his arms. He was ready.

“You ready?” Midoriya nudged Todoroki as Mamoru activated his quirk by sitting in a meditative position.

Todoroki crossed his arms. “There is nothing to worry about. We aren’t doing this alone, as you said. We’ve been through a lot together.”

“Agreed. I feel bad for Mamoru though. Both Replicate and he have such dangerous quirks!”

“Your quirk almost left you paralyzed.” Todoroki responded, looking somewhat guilty.

Midoriya nudged Todoroki once more. “Are you talking about that ‘Hand Crusher’ thing?”

Todoroki averted his eyes. Before they had grown closer, Midoriya used to think it was Todoroki’s way of trying to show his disinterest in the conversation, but now he had learned to read it as he way of expressing flustered. Midoriya briefly wondered if he could blush. Would one side of his face flush more than the other? “Why do you and Iida keep bringing that up. I meant it-“

“Ready!” Mamoru sucked in a deep breath. “Hold hands, everyone.”

Midoriya held his hand out to Todoroki and Uraraka, who were on either side of them and closed his eyes. Uraraki squeezed his hand and Todoroki’s hand was cold. A bright light flashed to the room and Midoriya felt the wind being sucked out of his lungs. He wanted to squeeze his hands, both of them, but then realized-

He couldn’t feel them anymore.

“Location! London England! Latitude and Longitude Unknown! Date! September 6th, 1995! Duration! Unlimited!”
