Chapter Text
The bustling of people in the Atrium seemed extra loud and grating this morning as Tonks made her way to the elevators for what would be the last time for a while. It was the right decision and soon she’d be able to give her full attention to the Order, Merlin knows she needed the extra time to keep her wits about her out there.
She’d just reached the elevators when she heard a familiar voice call to her.
“Hold the lift” Danny’s tall figure came into view followed close behind by Mel as the three witches got into the elevator, hitting the buttons for their respective floors.
“Thanks for that” Danny ran a hand through her hair “we’re running a little later than we thought.”
“Yeah because someone was waiting at the wrong entrance” Mel responded looking pointedly at her redheaded companion.
“Look I said I was sorry, I could have sworn we said the east side of the Atrium” she sighed at her partner while Mel just rolled her eyes.
Tonks shook her head at the pair, they’d always been close friends with an extremely competitive nature meaning they were at each other’s throats more often than not. She looked at the pair as they continued to bicker and snipe at each other, they were dressed far more smartly than she’d seen from either of them since the Yule Ball.
“What are you guys doing in the Ministry anyway?” Tonks asked during a lull in their bickering.
“We’re meeting a client” Mel answered her while Danny straightened out the front of her dress robes, “we aren’t allowed to say who or what department but it’s a two-day gig to some international conference in Paris. We won’t get a chance to see much of the city but at least it’s a break from some of the more monotonous jobs we’ve had since starting.”
The Auror nodded impressed with how quickly they were managing to make a name for themselves. The three hadn’t been particularly close in school, in fact she wasn’t sure whether Mel had ever gotten over the Butter Beer incident, still she thought it was commendable they’d started straight out of Hogwarts with little to no help.
“Well this is us” Danny sighed as the elevator stopped at the Department of Mysteries, “don’t tell anyone this is where we got off, everything about this job is supposed to be completely under wraps.”
“My lips are sealed” Tonks winked waving the pair of Gryffindor’s off.
It was only another minute or so before she reached her stop at the Auror office, taking a deep breath before stepping out onto the floor. She could do this, there was nothing that could stop her, all she had to do was go to Scrimgeour’s office, hand him her resignation note, clear her desk and leave. If in the process of clearing her things a couple of files happened to get copied, then it would be entirely by accident.
The office was fairly empty today giving her a clear and uneventful path to Scrimgeour’s office. The voice from inside called for her to enter after two knocks, entering the office Tonks took in the haggard appearance of her boss. The man looked like he hadn’t slept in a good couple of days, there was definitely something going on with him, she just couldn’t figure out what. There was no use in her staying to get to the bottom of it, she’d had enough, given Scrimgeour enough chances, there was nothing left for her here, not right now.
The older wizard looked up at the new presence in his office without so much as a word of acknowledgement. Tonks cleared her throat in an attempt to gain the full attention of her boss, causing him to finally make eye contact with her.
“Sir, I’m here to hand in my resignation.”
“Well I can’t say I’m surprised” he replied holding out his hand to receive the letter “you haven’t exactly been working to the best of your ability lately.”
Tonks bit her lip to stop herself from retaliating. She wanted to yell at him about how he hadn’t been working to the best of his ability, using poor judgement that caused one of their youngest to end up in St. Mungos but no, obviously it was her, she hadn’t been on the top of her game.
“Well if that’s all Miss Tonks then you can leave, there’s no need to work the usual notice period” he dismissed her with a wave of the hand.
With that she turned her back on her ex-boss, she had other things to focus on right now and the sooner she could get started, the better.

A groan bubbled up through her throat as she stretched her limbs out, totally content and pleased with how her plans had gone last night.
She and Carmilla ended up watching Dracula since it was one of her girlfriends’ favourites, Laura would even joke sometimes that she was like the titular character with her pale skin and ability to be incredibly charming and seductive.
Afterwards Laura had every intention of putting on a second film but somehow found herself distracted when Carmilla put all of that seductive behaviour to good use.
The weight of an arm draping over her waist pulled her out of her thoughts as the Ravenclaw next to her began to stir, curling closer into her.
There was nothing on this earth that could make her want to move right now, not even the looming deadline she had for the next issue of the Quibbler. In four days, she’d have to send an owl with her final draft over to Mr Lovegood and sure she wasn’t totally one hundred percent done but it was Carmilla’s day off. All she wanted was one day with her girlfriend with no work, no Order, no drama, just the two of them enjoying each other’s company, was that too much to ask?
The raven-haired beauty started leaving kisses along her jaw line, clearly no longer asleep, she turned to face her, capturing those lips with her own as she let her hands glide down her girlfriends’ sides to rest on her hips, pulling her closer.
This was where they were meant to be, two halves of the same whole, souls intertwined with nothing that could break them apart.
Nothing.
Except Nymphadora Tonks crashing through their bedroom door and flopping herself down on to the foot of their bed.
