Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

“I’m moving.”

A pang went through the young Haru’s chest. He felt his heart drop down to the earth’s core.

“You’re kidding, right?” He laughed, thinking it to obviously not be true. “Dai-kun, you’re my best friend. That’s scary. Don’t joke about stuff like that.”

“I’m sorry for not telling you sooner. I have a month left at the most,” One Kanbe Daisuke responded, voice as stern and collected as always. He was freshly 7 years old, but because of his upbringing he found himself to be a bit more quiet and well put together than others his age.

Haru shook his head in disbelief, “You can’t be leaving me,” he clenched his fists, knuckles on his tiny hands turning white. “You’re my favorite person at this school…” He felt himself begin to tear up.

“Haru-kun…” he grabbed onto his wrist, not quite being the best with comforting others. “I’ll be here for a little while longer. Let’s make it count, right?” he lifted his other hand to wipe off Haru’s moist cheek with his thumb.

Haru nodded, sniffling slightly. “Yeah…” He paused. “Where are you going? What for?”

“Kyoto. My father made an important business partner there, and decided it would be easier if we were closer to them.” Daisuke announced, straightfaced.

Haru laughed through his slowly forming tears. “Wow, Kyoto? That doesn’t seem like you and your family!” He gave his friend a gentle shove.

A shrug came from Daisuke, and he continued, “It shouldn’t be for more than a few years. Mother mentioned keeping our house here, so we’ll be back. I hope.” Daisuke took hold of Haru’s newly unclenched hands. “I’ll come back to you. No matter what, I’ll make sure I see you again.”

And he did.

Though, not in the way he expected it.

Upon moving back during his teen years, he realized Haru must have gone to another school. He felt like his years of waiting had gone to waste, but decided to enjoy his last few years of school regardless. Above all, he was happy to be in his hometown again.

School dragged on; Daisuke always felt like something was missing from his life. That boy, the one he truly considered to be his other half, did not come back to him when and where he expected it. This sort of thing was uncommon for him. Everything in life goes right, as long as you have enough money: this was always his philosophy. But somehow, the one thing Daisuke wanted most was the most hard to attain.

His life wasn’t unhappy by any means, though it quickly became boring without Haru by his side. He had realized this ages ago, but assumed it would pass as soon as he returned. Here it set in that he was alone. His social reservation and reluctance to form relationships had soon become his enemy. Haru truly had been his only real friend at the time.

And so, he turned to the one thing that made life fun, the one thing that gave him a rush, the one thing that made him forget the word “boring” that could only be used to describe his life: frivolous spending. Such a habit would be a bad thing, but it was hardly noticeable when it came to the Kanbe family.

It was something that followed him well into young adulthood. But he soon found other things that followed him into adulthood, as well.

It was a summer day and Daisuke was a recently graduated college student. He got a degree in business, making sure to pacify his parents. He enjoyed spending his days cruising around, surrounded by beautiful women—though it didn't feel quite right, and showing the cars he would buy off. Absolutely carefree, he drove somewhat recklessly. This wasn’t a problem in the slightest to him, until he saw flashing lights behind him.

The giggles of the girls he was entertaining himself with died down as they noticed as well. Daisuke quickly pulled over, hoping to quickly pay his ticket and get it over with.

He rolled down his window as the pair of cops got out of the car, and was amazed at what he saw. What else but amber eyes and sandy hair that had danced in his mind for some 15 years. He found himself thinking of fate, thanking god for this opportunity, nearly forgetting he was being pulled over for reckless driving.

“Sir, do you know why I pulled you over?” The voice of the officer who caught his eye came out sweet like honey. It was much deeper now, Daisuke noted, but it still had similarities to when they were younger. He knew this was his Haru. That voice, the one that would lousily sing next to him as he played the piano, had not left his mind since the day he left Tokyo. Daisuke was pulled from his thoughts when the voice spoke again, “Sir?”

“Oh, yes. My apologies. It was my driving, yes? Save the ticket, I can pay you right here.” Daisuke didn’t even give the senior officer a glance, immediately locking eyes with the taller—oh, how tall he had gotten...—man.

“I don’t think you c—”

Daisuke smiled at him, “You must be new; I have special permission to pay out of pocket.”

“I don’t want your money. That’s against protocol,” Haru quickly wrote up his ticket and handed it to him with a straight face. He watched as the senior officer patted Haru on the back before they got back in their car and allowed Daisuke to drive off.

Daisuke just smiled, for what else could he do? His life had just changed.

If Haru was a rookie cop, he would definitely be seeing him in a few years, yet another thing he was so sure about.

And so, he flew off to England in search of the best criminal justice training program he could find. Everything in life goes right, as long as you have enough money.
