Disappear

Chapter 19: The End

Summary:

A peaceful conclusion

Chapter Text

Miles is incredibly proud of his wife.

The pride doesn’t waver when Milena comes home from work and tells him she quit her job because she can’t do it anymore. It doesn’t waver when soon after, he’s watching her leave the house in riot gear fully prepared to defend the peaceful protesters. It doesn’t even crack as he reasons with the officers at the precinct on why it was unjust to arrest his wife and the other protesters and how there would be serious legal ramifications, it’s one of the few occasions he doesn’t mind throwing his weight around.

He watches her push through university, aiding in activism, and eventually as she pushes her way through law school, he watches as she continues her studies while pregnant. Eventually, she graduates and becomes a defense attorney.

He supports her through all of it, and he can’t help but fall in love with her more and more everyday. Even on days where he had to rush to the grocery after a long day at work, to buy things that satisfied the strange cravings that came from pregnancy.

It’s worth it, he’s absolutely sure. Because his routine has shifted from working and going home. It’s turned into driving to his kids’ soccer practice and chatting with the other parents. His daughter, Diana, makes for a wonderful striker. His son, Theo, prefers to be goalie, and Miles is continually impressed with his quick reflexes. He’s not quite clear about each of their coach’s terminology when they come over to Miles and talk about their strengths, but Miles is just happy to see his children having fun and being praised for it.

They switch who picks the kids up from school or practice depending on who has a trial, and on the rare occasions where neither can, Wright, Gumshoe, Gavin, and his sister are always willing to help them.

It’s as he watches her wash the dishes (technically, it’s his turn to wash them but Milena felt bad since his trial went later than usual and was one of the more wilder ones of his career) one night that he realizes how incredibly happy he is. It’s practically bursting in his chest.

He has a family. He has a daughter with his quick wit, a son with his wife’s bright optimism, and a wife who is everything and more than Edgeworth could want. His bed isn’t large and empty, more often than not his arm goes numb from Milena laying her head on it and one of his legs usually gets trapped between hers. The house isn’t dead silent, usually filled with the kids talking, watching TV(Edgeworth always runs to the living room when he hears his kids watching Steel Samurai), Milena or him helping them with homework. It’s everything he could’ve ever wanted.

And it’s because of the woman in a plain black suit dress, wearing a frilly magenta apron, washing the dishes while humming some song their kids got stuck in their head.

He walks over, wrapping an arm around her waist and burying his face into the crook her neck, pressing a gentle kiss there.

“Miles,” She laughs, “Did you want to help me?” Milena turns and presses a kiss to his chin, and even after years of being married, it still sets his heart racing.

“Yes, it is supposed to be my turn after all.” Miles says, standing next to her and beginning to soap a plate.

They wash dishes together, Milena jabbed her hip into his and they’re both laughing as it becomes a game, even when Miles nearly drops a glass.

Later that night after Miles helps Diana with her history homework, he sits down for the nightly news and Milena nestles herself in his arms on the couch.

“Phoenix is wondering if we’ll be visiting for dinner this weekend.” Milena mentioned, showing him the text on her phone.

“We probably should, since next weekend you’re leaving for Washington to pick up your father.” Miles agreed, watching as a smile graced her face and she texted Phoenix.

“Life is about to get pretty weird, Miles, a lot of people are going to be suspicious about you being my father’s son in law.” Milena sighed, “Did you think about this before you proposed to me?”

Miles held her a little tighter, “I did, and I knew it would be worth it. It’s hard to live in a world where you’re missing from me.”

Milena looked up with a smile on her face before gently kissing his jaw.

He knows he’s in the best place he could possibly be, in his wife’s arms, in a home with two kids sleeping soundly, and in a job where he argues with his best friend for the greater good.

Miles is happy, and it's all because of the woman in his arms.

A/n: Thank you so much for everyone who made it this far! I really appreciate all the lovely comments I got as I wrote this story and while the ending isn't as exciting as the other chapters, I think it's time we give them both a break from suffering. I hope to see you guys in my other stories, and if I don't: thank you so much for taking this journey with me and being so patient!

Notes:

Thank you so much! Please leave a comment and feel free to let me know how I can improve! This is an expansion of the original oneshot/Part 1 of the series!
