Chapter Text
“Mr. Edgeworth Sir, this is my new protege! She’ll be assisting me in all of my cases as part of her training!”
~
The day was still clear in Edgeworth’s mind. The excited glint in her eyes and the genuineness in her smile as Gumshoe introduced her. The sunlight had no other perfect match than the detective in training.
(Y/n) (L/n).
He could remember the slightly (s/c) hand extended to him, the excited gleam in (e/c) eyes, and windswept hair ruffled with the summer breeze. He remembered asking himself why such a beautiful young woman wasn’t a model.
It wasn’t until later he realized a mind as bright as hers couldn’t be wasted.
~
“Mr. Edgeworth Sir, isn’t it strange?”
“Detective (L/n)?”
“We assumed the weapon used to assault the victim was the chimney poker because of the blood pool it lay in, but the fireplace was lit when we arrived. The marks on the victim had no hint of burning. When we found the suspect, wasn’t she missing a highheeled shoe?”
“Order the police to find that shoe or the remnants of it at all costs, Detective (L/n), you’re right to believe something is amiss.”
~
Passion. Edgeworth had met many passionate people in his life, lawyers especially. But to find someone so passionate in the happiness of strangers was rare.
~
“Detective (L/n), what were you thinking? Scaling a lamp post and leaping on top of a building to grab a child’s balloon is not only foolish but dangerous!”
“Mr. Edgeworth Sir, as an officer and detective, it’s my duty to ensure the safety and happiness of others. Besides, did you see the little boy’s smile?”
~
Edgeworth remembered how (Y/n) neglected to boast about the part the little boy called her a superhero and when his mother took a picture of the two together. She hadn’t even said “I told you so” when it turned out the family was wealthy and sent multiple gift baskets to the precinct and a formal thank you. Rather, she brought one of the boxes of expensive chocolate to his office and shared it with him.
Somehow there was never a day she forgot about him.
~
“Mr.Edgeworth Sir! I knew you’d be here!”
“It’s Christmas Eve, Detective (L/n), I was under the impression you had the holiday off.”
“I do, but my family doesn’t celebrate until tomorrow! Since you mentioned not having plans, I wanted to make sure we did something together!”
~
That’s how Edgeworth found himself trapped in his office with a variety of food, desserts, hot chocolate, and a small christmas tree surrounded by four beautifully wrapped presents. Even if it was only the two of them...Edgeworth could easily agree it was one of his most fond memories of any holiday.
There were countless stories he had of (Y/n) (L/n)’s shenanigans, ranging from stupid, selfless, to heartwarming. Some were ones he witnessed firsthand, others he heard through the office.
And of all the stories he’d ever heard of Detective (Y/n) (L/n), this was the worst possible one.
“Mr. Edgeworth sir, Detective (L/n) is missing!”
