Chapter Text

It had been about two weeks since Genji had completely moved in with Jesse. Angela visited sometimes, but she mostly requested that Genji visit her so that he could get his exercise and get out of the dorm.

It had been pretty quiet, minus Jesse being called out for a few small missions. He was just arriving back from his last one, which was the simply difficult task of tracking a high-ranking Talon member’s activity. Jesse had engaged in a chase, in which one thing led to another, and he suddenly found himself in a fistfight with three Talon mooks. He single-handedly beat all three of them into the dirt, but not without getting a few cuts and bruises in the process. It wasn’t anything bad, at least McCree didn’t think so.  He planned on visiting Dr. Ziegler later, once he’d had some time to relax a bit.

He walked down the halls until he finally found his door. The little red light was on, showing that Genji was inside. Once he went in, there would also be a yellow light. If someone that wasn’t in the room log was inside, it would be a flashing blue light.

He placed his finger on the scanner and shuffled into the room. Genji was sitting on his bed, reading a book that was translated in both English and Japanese. He looked up at Jesse, opening his mouth to greet him. His eyes widened at Jesse’s state. He had a black eye and cuts all over his face and neck.

Genji lept off the bed, leaving his book to fall onto the floor.

“Jesse! What has happened to you?” He gasped, reaching up to touch Jesse’s face. Jesse drew away from his hand, backing up a bit.

“Occupational hazard, darlin’. I’m jus’ fine.” He chuckled lightly. Worry still flooded Genji’s eyes.

“And what if you had lost your leg? or your arm? Would it still be an ‘occupational hazard’?” He exclaimed. “We are going to Angela right now.”

“Woah, Woah, slow down darlin’. It’s nothin’ really.” Jesse said nervously. Genji didn’t usually act this way, so it was surprising, to say the least. He had expected concern, not outright panic.

“No! It is! What if they get infected? What if you die?! You cannot die, and you will not . Not on my watch.” Genji shouted, visibly becoming emotional. Jesse took a half-step towards him, holding out his hands as if to calm a spooked horse.

“Darlin’ calm down. I ain’t gonna die. I’m okay, you’re okay; we’re all okay.” He murmured, opening his arms a little. He was lightly offering a hug, but he highly doubted Genji would accept it. Much to his surprise, Genji flung himself into Jesse’s arms, wrapping his arms around his torso tightly. The two stayed like this for a while. They held each other as if they were afraid that if they let go, the other would disappear.

“Please, Jesse.” Genji gasped.

“Please, what?” Jesse replied softly, gently rocking back and forth.

“Please do not leave me.”

“I won’t; I promise you that.”

Genji buried his head in Jesse's chest, breathing in deeply. He closed his eyes, content to stay in the moment forever.

“Uh, darlin’? As much as I lo- er, like bein’ like this, my legs are gettin’ a little tired from standing here.” Jesse said after a moment. He felt Genji laugh a few times, then he felt himself being pushed backward. He then found himself laying on his bed, which had been directly behind him. Genji grinned brightly, then fell on top of Jesse, laughing more.

The two moved around a bit, before finally finding a comfortable way to lay. Genji was laying on top Jesse with his face buried in the crook of Jesse’s neck and his arms wrapping around him. Jesse had one arm dangling off the edge of the bed, with the other around Genji. Normally, he wouldn’t exactly be the cuddly type, but he was exhausted and too tired to care. He knew that no-one else was there, only the two of them.

He was too tired to care about just how close they were, after all, did it matter? Genji’s presence was comforting, to say the least. And before he knew it, he found himself slowly drifting off to sleep.

Genji, however, was wide awake. He watched Jesse’s eyes slowly close, and he felt the slow rising and falling of Jesse’s chest even itself out. It was calming, how relaxed Jesse was in his presence. He wished he could fall asleep as easily as Jesse had, but his head swam with unwelcome thoughts.

Most of the thoughts were of his brother, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t shake them.

He thought of how Hanzo would have punished him for this, as he had always been very cold towards the aspect of anything even slightly... like this.

He growled quietly; memories of his brother seemed like they would continue to haunt him, and he hated that. It wasn’t fair, how he had to live with the thoughts and memories of Hanzo, whereas Hanzo only had to live with mild guilt if any at all.

Genji’s heart raced as he thought about it. If either of the Shimada brothers deserved what had happened, it was Hanzo. Yeah, Hanzo deserved it.

Genji wanted revenge, and that scared him. He frowned, looking around the room, then at Jesse.

Jesse looked peaceful, despite the small cuts and the black eye. Genji gave him a soft smile, then settled a bit. He snuggled into Jesse’s neck again and finally found himself becoming tired. His eyelids slowly became heavy, and eventually, he drifted into the best sleep that he’d had since arriving at the headquarters.

Genji was in the flower field again. He looked around, expecting to see the dragons again. However, it was nothing. It was empty. Despite the lack of giant terrifying dragons, there was something about the landscape that didn’t feel right. It was… hollow? Genji sensed that he was the only living thing for quite a while. The grass felt dead but looked alive if that made any sense.

The warm breeze didn’t feel as comforting, and the bright sun seemed too hot. For the first time, Genji didn’t want to be here; at least, he didn’t want to be alone.

It shouldn’t have been much of a surprise, but right as he thought of not wanting to be alone, who showed up behind him but Jesse McCree. His eyes glowed warmly, and there was a small smile on his face. He looked utterly perfect. He walked over to where Genji was standing and turned to him with a small smirk.

“Howdy, darlin’.” He said, wrapping his arm around Genji, who blushed profusely. Jesse gently grabbed Genji’s chin, running his thumb across his jaw.

Genji’s heart hammered as he noticed Jesse gradually leaning forward, stopping with only an inch or two in between the two of them. Genji was caught between staring into Jesse’s hypnotizing eyes and occasionally glancing at his lips. After pondering it for barely more than a moment, Genji closed the space between them, lightly pressing his lips to Jesse’s. He felt Jesse chuckle against him, causing small vibrations to run through the two of them.

Genji wrapped his arms around Jesse, putting one around his torso and the other around his neck, running his fingers through Jesse’s short chocolate locks.

Everything about this moment was, as it usually was when he was with Jesse, absolutely perfect. Genji felt McCree run his hand down his side, causing Genji to shudder. All Genji wanted was to stay like this, and to feel what he was feeling forever, however, all of that was crushed, as Genji was pulled out of his sleep in the most annoying way possible, at that time.

The sun was shining brightly through the window that was on the back wall between Genji and Jesse’s beds, which were on either side of the room. The sun also happened to be shining directly into Genji’s eyes.

He groaned and wiggled around, which accidentally caused Jesse to wake up with a start. He almost shoved Genji completely out of the bed, before he realized where he was and what was happening. Jesse stared at Genji for a moment with wide eyes, making no sound.

“W-what is it?” Genji asked shakily, blinking in worry.

“Oh, nothin’. I just never thought I’d wake up to see someone like you.” Jesse said, his voice husky with sleep. His accent was so much thicker than usual, Genji could barely understand him.

“I sincerely hope you mean that in a good way,” Genji whispered, smiling a little. Jesse smiled back, reaching up to cup Genji’s face.

“In the best way.” He chuckled, moving his face closer to Genji’s until their noses touched.

Genji gasped lightly, a blush slightly visible on his scarred face. Jesse grinned brightly, then wrapped an arm around Genji’s waist. The young Shimada yelped a little as he was pulled down. He tried to roll away, which only ended with Jesse switching on top of him, pinning him down by his arms. They both were silent for a moment before Jesse slowly chuckled deeply, followed by Genji giggling.

“Darlin’, this has been fun ‘n all, but I’m tired and it’s not mornin’ yet, so do me a favor, and go back ‘t sleep.” He smirked, flopping beside Genji.

“Jesse,” Genji started with a small laugh. “The sun is shining through our window right this moment. It is most definitely morning.”

This was met with a muffled groan as Jesse shoved his face into the bed. Genji poked him gently, smirking. He was suddenly caught off guard as Jesse’s elbowshoved into his side, pushing him completely off the bed.

Falling.

Ground.

Ow?

Genji looked up to Jesse with a look of betrayal. Jesse, who was leaning over the edge of the bed, gave him a sheepish look. Genji rubbed his eyes and stretched before standing up. He awkwardly retreated to the bathroom where he sat on the counter, wondering to himself what the hell was going on in his brain.
