Chapter Text
So, Bakugou may or may not be freaking out.
It’s not like he didn’t know Eijirou’s answer. No, they’ve talked about doing this more times than he can count. They have a house together, an agency together, two fucking dogs and only one cat (the sacrifices Bakugou makes for this man…), and neither can imagine a life without the other.
So, no, it isn’t the possible rejection that makes him nervous.
What makes him scared out of his mind was the set up. You see, two months ago Eijirou got drunk. Nothing surprising there (if you don’t count the exorbitant amount of alcohol Eijirou had to consume in order to get drunk), except this time Drunk Eijirou rambled. About a marriage proposal. About his marriage proposal, and how he wanted it to go. Bakugou already had the ring at this point, so maybe it was a gift that he didn’t have to come up with what to do for it. But, Eijirou started talking about the song he rewrote all those years ago in high school, and apparently he “always wanted to hear it again” and “would literally die if Katsuki proposed that way”.
Which is fine. Totally fine. Except he also made it very clear that he wanted his proposal to be in front of friends and family. Which, cool, Bakugou could respect that; if it didn’t mean singing for the first time in front of anyone except Eijirou.
Which is terrifying.
But, here he is. On a white adirondack chair surrounded by blood red roses, fairy lights, and the Bakusquad, the Dekusquad, the DynaRiot Agency’s employees, along with both sets of parents with his trusty, old guitar in his lap while someone went to get Eijirou. Damn, the things he did for this man.
The sight of Eijirou made Bakugou forget everything, though. Fuck, even now he’s taking his breath away. Bakugou watched as his eyes crinkled in confusion, Mina light heartedly shoving him closer.
“Kats… What’s all this?”
“What’s it look like, Ei?” Bakugou smirked in the way he knew made his boyfriend weak, and watching the shock melt into joy in his lover’s eyes gave him enough courage to start the song.
“I met you in the dark.
I flipped you off.”
You broke my walls down
And helped me grow up.”
Eijirou gasped, his eyes already filled with tears. Bakugou shook his head fondly.
“We laughed the days away
I cursed too much.
You held me close when the
Nightmares kept me up.”
Bakugou knew, he knew that everyone present had jaws dropped to the floor and steam coming out of their ears. When he had told his idea to the Bakusquad, they had laughed at him, saying that his gravelly voice would ruin the proposal. Now, Bakugou swore he just saw Kaminari drop to the ground in shock out of the corner of his eye. He grinned, turning his full attention back to Eijirou.
“Then you smiled
Into my shoulder
That night at the end of October
My heart was pounding in my chest
Then you asked
me to stay over
That’s when I started to scold ya
But I wished I never would have left”
Eijirou was alternating from suppressing sobs and light chuckles, and it was beautiful. Bakugou couldn’t ask for anything more.
“I knew I loved you then
But you’d never know
Cause I played it cool when I was
Scared of letting go.
I knew I needed you
But I never showed
But I wanna stay with you
‘Til we’re gray and old
Just say you won’t let go.
Say you won’t let go…”
Bakugou took a deep breath. Now came the worst part. Or maybe the best, he couldn’t decide. Eijirou had never heard this newly-written part of the song. Keeping his eyes on Eijirou, Bakugou poured his soul into the song.
“I’ll wake you up with some
Breakfast in bed.
I’ll bring you hot chocolate
With a kiss on your head”
(Why Eijirou didn’t like coffee, Bakugou still couldn’t figure out)
“I’ll feed the dogs and cat
Kiss you goodbye
And I’ll thank the lucky stars
For that night
When you forced me to sing with you
Helped me realize I could have you
I still dream about that night”
Ok, now Eijirou was full out sobbing. Tears flowed unrelenting down his face as a small grin played at his lips. Damn it, he was so frickin cute, even at 25 years old.
“And our life is wonderful as ever
And I swear it couldn’t get better
I wanna always hold you tight
I still love you now
And I hope you know
Whatever happens
Your love’s worth more than gold
I know I need you
And I hope I showed
Cause Red, I wanna stay with you
Til we’re gray and old
Just say you won’t let go
Say you won’t let go”
Bakugou let the last chord fade, before moving to one knee in front of a shell-shocked, awed Eijirou. Bakugou smiled gently, pulling the box out of his back pocket and raising it.
“That song basically said everything, so all that’s left is to ask, I guess. What do you say, Red? Marry me?”
With a fist to his mouth to stifle more sobs, Eijirou nodded. By the time Bakugou stood, Eijriou had found his voice, a litany of “Yes, yes, of course” and “Holy fuck, Kats!’ falling from his mouth. Bakugou ignored the cheers (And the idiots still freaking out that he could sing) and pulled his fiance into a kiss before burying his face into Eijirou’s shoulder.
“Thank you, Ei,” he mumbled.
Eijirou chuckled, “Shouldn’t I be saying that?”
Shaking his head, he pulled back ever so slightly, “No, if it wasn’t for you all those years ago, I would’ve never gotten my head out of my ass and dated you. I would’ve never known how happy I could really be. I fucking love you, Red.”
Oh, fuck, he made him cry again. Eijirou pulled him into another tight embrace, managing to mumble, “you’re welcome” seconds before they were mobbed by the friends and family that surrounded them.
