Truth Bites

Chapter Text

Sometimes she regretted buying an alarm clock. Even more so when she forgot that she could be lazy and it still woke her up. And naturally once she was awake the last few days started rolling around in her mind, and then it was better to just get up and start doing things then to laze around and dwell.

The good thing about early mornings was the bathroom was almost guaranteed to be free and this morning was no different. It was also nice to spread out in the main room to do her work without anyone else to disturb her and the tv on low volume in the back ground. Part of her wanted to hide in her room until the problems went away, but the part of her that had toughened since coming to Morganville flipped that part off and decided just to live her life.

She spent a few hours on her class work before she knew she had finished what would have and probably had been set if she had attended. Looking at the time she realised she should almost definitely be at Myrnin lab already, especially if she was going to keep her word and make it seem like they were still working on what was causing the truth. She grabbed her bag, leaving most of the books out and headed to the lab. She wasn't sure where everyone else was, when she was in the zone like that unless there was a vampire attack she was likely to miss anything that happened.

The trip to the lab was a quick and familiar one. Morganville seemed to be slowly returning back to its usual amount of weird, she saw a few people talking even though it was stilted. Hopefully that was a sign of both citizens adapting and the truth serum wearing off.

Which was what Myrnin appeared to be working on when she arrived. In fact he was so absorbed in it that he didn't even pay attention to her walking in.

She dropped her bag by the stairs and started to figure out what he was doing. He seemed to be working off a singular page of scribbles, clearly the instructions Oliver had mentioned. Although how he had deciphered them was another question.

It was only when got in Myrnin way that he actually acknowledged her presence "Ah Claire! You can be a proper lab assistant today. Fetching and carrying isn't that exciting?" he mocked

"Very- Not at all" that was new, truth was definitely wearing off.

The day went on like that, both occasionally asking questions and telling stories, seeing if they could lie and mostly failing. In Myrnin's lab it was easy to leave all her problems at the door and focus on the one at hand. The work consumed her, and she consumed any bit of knowledge Myrnin offered. He didn't teach her per se but more nudged her in the right direction and let her figure things out herself. It was best on his patient days where he would let her make mistakes and slowly improve, on his less patient days she had to work harder but she didn't mind really. It was a comfortable, albeit challenging work environment. It was almost like the serum had unlocked something in Myrnin's mind, or maybe like her helped them accept things they might of otherwise avoided. The stories flowed freely and she hoped they wouldn't stop when the effects wore off completely.

By the end of the day a new batch of truth serum was being made, and they could tell entire lies. A second later they would feel compelled to correct themselves but it was a very clear sign that the serum had almost completely wore off. One more night and they would be free. It was good news.

They were just about done for the night and Claire was getting ready to go, she was tired and taking the portal for a change so she didn't have to walk. Myrnin hadn't asked again but she knew she had to tell him now, whilst he would know she was telling the truth. It was only fair. She waited for the portal to open and then turned to him.

"Myrnin I know the answer" she said and waited for him to look up at her "I do want to be a vampire" she smiled and they both waited for the correction, though she knew it would never come. She wondered what outcome he had been hoping for.

"You do?" he asked, a look of shock and wonder on his face.

She nodded "yeah"

"That's wonderful news!" he laughed and kissed her on the cheek "Just say the word. Have a good evening Claire" he was grinning from ear to ear, it was contagious.

"You too" she said and stepped back into the glass house.

Coming out in the secret room wasn't that surprising. They had put a book case in front of the downstairs portal so it was the most convenient entrance to the house. It was also just a nice room, non of them ever went out there way to clean it and yet somehow nothing ever seemed to collect dust. She wondered if Amelie could literally scare dust particles away and couldn't help but let out a small laugh.

She sat on the sofa, content to wait out the last few hours of the truth serum in the comfort of solidarity. In the last few days she had an argument with Shane, without being able to stand up for herself, she had several civil conversations with Oliver, probably an all time record and told her crazy boss/friend that she wanted to be a vampire. Safe to say she had an eventful few days.

Things weren't going back to normal after the truth serum. No things only seemed to get stranger in Morganville and Claire had definitely earned a few hours off. Kicking off her shoes she pulled her feet up next to her and got out a book. Fiction for a change and let herself escape into a world with someone else's problems for a while.

Hers would still be there when she got back.

Notes:

There is a severe lack of Morganville content for me to consume so I felt the need to make some of my own. I'm not the best writer so any constructive criticism is appreciated!
