Chapter Text

Hinata’s face was as red as a balloon.

He was mortified- how could he have put Kenma in that position?! He was such a horrible friend...Kenma might not even text him later today, asking what the ginger had eaten for lunch. Kenma would probably never text him again...Oh boy did Hinata have to use the bathroom.

“What’s with your face? You look like you shit your pants.” Kageyama felt better now that they had left Tokyo, the possibility that the quiet setter would steal his middle blocker was no longer as threatening.

“You idiot! Why’d you have to show up? I was having a great time with Kenma! He was showing me how to p-”

“AHA! He was trying to steal you! Sugawara-san and Sawamura-san would help me stop you from transferring to Nekoma. You’re Karasuno’s favorite decoy, not Nekoma’s.” Kageyama was passionate and refused to listen to Hinata’s retaliation. Hinata decided to stop after 15 minutes of trying to convince Kageyama that it wasn’t what he thought it was.

Hinata was quite irritated, and unfortunately quite impulsive as a result. He didn’t speak to Kageyama for a week.

“Now, now,” Suga coaxed, “ I’m sure things will be alright.” His face said otherwise.
“We’ve been going at it for too long and teachers have started teaching really important stuff for exams. Let’s take a quick break, Daichi, and then we can have our last few reps.” Kiyoko began handing out water, Tanaka and Nishinoya trailing behind her.

Daichi sighed, as Asahi came up to the pair. “They better get it together by the end of this practice because we have a game with XX high school soon. I hope their fight isn’t about what Kageyama’s been worrying about recently- I don’t think Kuroo is really willing to help Kozume steal Hinata from us.”

Asahi took a quick inhale to voice his opinion, but shut his mouth with an audible click. His friends snapped their heads to face him.

“...Well, if you ask me, I think he’s a bit insecure about their relationship. They have their quicks at a decent level- for now I mean. Things are gonna get even more intense soon, I think Kageyama senses that something might change.”

Suga nodded and took the following pause to say, “Maybe, but let’s go. I can tell Tsukishima is getting irritated that Hinata is taking up all of Yamaguchi’s attention.”

After practice had ended, Hinata stopped Kiyoko from taking down the net from the poles out of habit. For a split second he’d forgotten about his fight with Kageyama and took a quick breath to shout his name and ask for some tosses. Discouraged, he put the net away and collected his things to head home.

On the way out the door he sent a text to Kenma.

To :D Kenma: hi! Can I come over tomorrow? 6:30pm

From :D Kenma: hey sho. You can come over tomorrow. 6:30pm
From :D Kenma: another sleepover? Or just for a few hours? 6:31pm

To :D Kenma: no, I think just a few hours. 6:31pm
To :D Kenma: I’ve got to get on my bike so i can get home. I’ll text you later! 6:31pm

From :D Kenma: ok 6:32pm

Hinata had spent his Saturday afternoon ranting to Kenma about how annoying and stupid Kageyama was being- Nekoma had a great volleyball team, but it wasn’t Karasuno. It wasn’t where the Little Giant had trained and became a legend.

Kenma listened intently to Hinata, he had no advice to give the younger and thought that the ginger would appreciate someone who would simply listen and not give an opinion.

The day had passed quickly, and much too soon it was 5 in the early evening. Hinata still had his own household chores to attend to. The two boys cleaned up the elder’s room and Hinata had moved to the corner where the door of Kenma’s room was. He pulled out a yellow hoodie from his bag and turned to face Kenma.

“Uh, Kenma, I accidentally stole this a while back. I hope you didn’t miss it while it was gone. Don’t worry, I washed it.” Hinata held out the yellow garb with a light blush dusting his cheeks, his eyes scanning the carpet under his feet.

“Oh,” Kenma reached for his hoodie. “ I didn’t even notice I was missing it. Thanks.
Say, Shoyo. It’s a bit chilly outside, and I saw on the way back from the station on TV that it’s windy over by your house. Will you be fine in your sweatshirt? It seems a bit thin for the weather outside.” Kenma had the urge to bundle up the ginger in one of his own jackets but quickly cut the idea down. His subconscious was getting a bit too brave.

“Uh, I think I should be fine. I should really go, I promised Natsu I’d teach her how to build stamina. Sorry for being such a downer, I wasn’t trying to make today all about my problems.” Hinata grabbed his bag and threw it over his shoulder. “I’ll wait for ya down stairs, okay?” Hinata flashed Kenma a grin. Kenma nodded and arranged the last few out-of-place items in his room before grabbing his wallet and keys.

At the entrance of the Kozume residence, Hinata stood waiting for his friend. ‘Kenma is such a great friend. It’s nice to know that he didn’t mind my rant earlier, he’d make a great-’

“Alright, Shoyo, let’s get going.” Kenma and Hinata exited the building and headed towards the train station. The air was fresh, eliciting a shiver from both high school boys turning the tips of their noses a bright red. The walk was quiet. No words were needed to create the soothing atmosphere between the boys.

Soon enough the two reached the station. Kenma noticed Hinata was slightly shivering, but shivering nonetheless. Kenma unzipped the jacket he was wearing and draped it over Hinata’s shoulders.

“If you’re already this cold I don’t know how you’re gonna feel when you get home. Take my jacket, if you get sick Kageyama might come for me,” Kenma jokes. Hinata gave his friend a small smile and chuckled. They said their goodbyes and parted. As soon as Shoyo was out of sight, Kenma left the station and headed towards a nearby cafe for a drink that could warm him up. He purchased a small hot chocolate and as he left the quaint shop, his mind began to wander.

‘Shoyo looks really cute in my jacket,’ Kenma thought, rubbing the sides of his arms. ‘I’d like to see him bundled up for a ski trip- he’d probably look similar to a hamster wearing a puffy vest and earmuffs.’ Kenma subconsciously smiled at the thought and headed home.

There were enough people in Hinata’s train car to create warmth, so Hinata took off Kenma’s jacket and fiddled with the video game character charm hanging on the jacket zipper. Hinata couldn't recall the character’s name. Was it Sergeant Hawk? Major Eagle? It was unimportant and Hinata collected his thoughts. He thought about how lucky he was to have such a caring, selfless friend like Kenma. He’d be jealous of whoever would capture his friend’s heart. Hinata’s chest ached at the mere thought of someone capturing Kenma’s attention. ‘Who else would he spend his weekends with?’ His brain supplied, but Hinata had a feeling there was more to it.

Hinata spent the rest of the train ride and his bike ride home thinking of the chores waiting to be completed at home- and more importantly, what was for dinner. That night Hinata had fallen into a deep sleep, surrounded by the comforting scents of apple pie and sandalwood.

Notes:

sorry this took so long and if it seems short. I've been feeling major writer's block but I have a half idea of what to write next. as always, please leave kudos if you enjoyed reading this chapter, and feel free to put in the comment section a prompt you'd like me to write. i like the idea of writing another y/n x character fic.

Notes:

if you want to see a second chapter, i can't guarantee when you'll see it. I'll make an estimation and i think i can finish this by the end of this weekend, maybe tomorrow, maybe later than sunday. pls leave comments below if you'd like, or if you'd like to leave a suggestion for a fic, I don't do any 18+ content (at least for now, maybe if i grow a pair) so wholesome stuff for now :)
