Chapter Text

Sunny remembered that morning.

"Basil's birthday is tomorrow,"

"You can tell him then. I'm sure it'll be a greaaat birthday present."

"You can do this Sunny. Remember to breathe, and get straight to the point. I believe in you!"

He covered his face with a pillow. Yes, Sunny knew what he had to say, but he was still extremely shy and questioning about it.

Sunny looked around. It was a rather simple room, much like the one he would go to in his sleep if he's had a bad day, just not as monochrome. Laptop over there, Mewo sleeping on some clothes, closet, desktop, and (obviously) his bed. Sunny sighed.

Suddenly, the boy remembered something just then. Something that calmed him down a bit, what B-Basil, likes saying.

"Everything will be okay."

Basil always likes looking at the bright side of things. He certainly isn't as good as Sunny at calming down people, well, everyone except for Sunny himself. Whenever Sunny was stressing out over an assignment or practicing for a recital, Basil would give him words of encouragement and that phrase. "Everything will be okay." Maybe, it would even work for a situation like this, and remedy this menace called an "emotion".

So that was that, Sunny thought. Everything would be okay. He just has to go to Basil's house, conceal the symptoms of love for Basil that he had, at least for a little while, do some activities, sing happy birthday, and then tell him. Everything will be okay.

Basil's birthday party was at 4 PM, giving him plenty of time to prepare. He repeated to himself one more time.

"Everything will be okay."

4 PM came a little quicker than Sunny would've liked. He was still fairly worried.

Mari, who was about ready to leave reminded him again.

"Don't forget, Sunny!" Mari told him. "You can do this!"

Basil's house was within walking distance. Mari walked with their physical gifts, while Sunny prepared what Mari called his "mental gift" Sunny still thought that it was a little cringe, but he supposes beggars can't be choosers.

Surprisingly, nobody was there yet. After some knocking, the door opened.

"Mari, Sunny?" Basil said.

Sunny felt his heart start beating faster.

"I'm glad to see you guys, but it's only 2:00..." Basil continued

Wait, how could it be 2 PM? Damn it, the clock must've been set wrong.

"I-It's okay though! You can help set everything up, if you want!" Basil said.

"Gladly!" Mari replied before Sunny had the chance to say anything. "I'll set up decorations. Why don't you go help Basil with the cooking, Sunny?" Mari winked again.

"Sounds good!" Basil said. "Come on Sunny, let's go!"

Basil grabbed Sunny's arm and led him to the kitchen. Sunny felt that tingling sensation waving throughout his body and his face getting all hot again, but he tried his best to look as if nothing was happening at all.

"Okay, you can cut the green beans for the casserole, I'll go get ingredients for the cake." Basil said.

Sunny's heart got to have a bit of a rest after Basil left. Sunny liked knifes, just naturally. He could never explain why. Sunny was good with knifes. Usually.

Chopping the green beans was easy. 12 pieces a green bean. Sunny's mind started to drift off.

What if him and Mari didn't show up, Sunny thought. Would Basil have to do all of this? Basil shouldn't have to prepare his own birthday party. Basil should be relaxing on the couch while cuddling with Sunny, what was that last thought?

Sunny's daydream was interrupted with a sharp pain in his hand. While his mind was elsewhere, his muscle memory hasn't exactly worked out. Oops.

Once Sunny noticed the massive gash on his hand, the pain immediately amplified. Sunny was trying his best to ignore it, the wound hadn't gone deep enough to where he'll need stitches. More importantly, Sunny was trying not to cry. Not with Basil in the same house. HE was supposed to be the cool kid who sheltered Basil from harm's way, not vice versa. It wasn't fair. The pain was unbearable. Sunny felt a bit drowsy, closed his eyes, and passed out.

Sunny woke up, in a bed that seemed to be even more comfortable than his. Was he really on- Basil's bed?? He felt something being applied to his arm, it was sore but didn't feel nearly as painful as the events before. As his vision adjusted to the room, he noticed who was treating him. B-B-Basil? Sunny felt his heart race again, fast enough for Basil to notice.

"Oh! Sunny!" Basil said. "I'm glad you woke up. I thought you'd miss the party! I already prepared everything."

Sunny looked at the clock. 3:45 PM. Ugh.

Sunny felt his face getting hotter and hotter, redder and redder. What had he done? Now Basil had to make what he was supposed to make, because he went off-task and got himself hurt. He figured an apology would be the least he could give him.

"S-Sorry.." Sunny muttered.

"It's fine!" Basil said. "Really! It wasn't-"

"Please be mad at me." Sunny said in a serious, but still fatigued tone. Basil also noticed Sunny's face and cheeks. Was he having a fever?

"Sunny..." Basil sighed. Sunny had always been the submissive type. He gets shaken up when he messes up or thinks he's become a burden to others, maybe in bias of his perfect older sister.

"Sunny," Basil continued "Please don't be angry at yourself. You were just caught off-guard. Do it for me Sunny, alright?"

Wow, Sunny thought. Basil forgave him for such a stupid mistake. Did he even deserve Basil as a partner? Sunny suppressed these thoughts. He didn't have time to keep thinking anyways. Time doesn't get any slower, there was someone at the door already.

"Sunny, you can go sit down somewhere," Basil said. "I'll get the door."

Sunny got up and sat down in the living room. Mari was in the kitchen next to them. Basil invited everyone inside. In came, Hero, Kel and Aubrey bickering over something, and Polly who left to get some groceries.

Standard activities followed, as per usual. Talking, a bit more talking, some games, more talking, and lighting the birthday cake candles while everyone sang happy birthday. Sunny never liked talking, he avoids talking as much as possible. He's never sang in his life either.

Things quieted down after that. Sunny saw that as his chance to strike. He gulped and walked to Basil's table, it was empty. Sunny's heart pounded.

"B-Basil?" Sunny said quietly. Basil turned his head around.

"Oh, hey Sunny!" Basil said. "Is there something you need?"

"You." Sunny blurted out. He wasn't trying to flirt.

"Huh?" Basil asked. "I'm right here, Sunny. Do you need more bandages, tell me!" Sunny's cheeks faded to a tint of pink.

"Basil..." Sunny said gently. "I-I like you. Like, love you."

Basil made a surprised peep sound. Sunny was waiting for an answer before he started to get nervous again. It had felt as if the entire house had gone silent.

"Sunny.." Basil replied. "I think I like you too. I think I've liked you for a while, but I was too afraid to tell you. You're really brave, Sunny. I love you." Basil blushed.

"I love you too, Basil." Sunny said. "So, dating now, what do we do?"

"I think we uh, k-kiss," Basil said. "Like real couples do."

Both of their faces went red, but they were thinking the same thing.

They leaned forward, and kissed each other.

Sunny felt a wave of serotonin. It felt nice. He wished they could've stayed like this forever.

...

"Maybe you should get a room," Mari said, out of the blue.

They both jumped.

"MARI!" Sunny yelled.

"Ha, sorry guys." Mari chuckled.

Sunny listened in, but still didn't hear anything. He looked at the table that everyone else was eating cake at, to find that instead of random conversation starters, they were whispering with shocked looks on their faces. Did they hear them? Probably, but Sunny didn't care.

The strange new feeling also seemed to be gone. The only symptoms of being around Basil now, is just a pink tint appearing on Sunny's cheeks.

The party eventually ended. Polly said goodbye to everyone at the door, only leaving Sunny and Basil. Sunny found Basil lying on the couch, and didn't hesitate to make space for himself. Sunny rested his head on Basil's shoulder. It was warm. Just pleasantly warm. They both blushed. Sunny started to fall asleep.

"I love you." Sunny said.
