Chapter Text
The moonlight shined down from the sky on gentle wings, lighting the beach and the wave caps, dancing along the water.
A girl stood on the sand, facing the sea. Her brown hair was braided and rested on her shoulder, a red ribbon in it. Her eyes were covered by her bangs, but as the wind passed, a glimpse of eerie green could be seen.
She wore an old, tattered yellow coat, white shorts barely clinging to her thin legs. She stared out to the water, a strange serine silence surrounding her and all of those in her presence.
The familiar salty ocean scent filled the air, a comforting smell she had learned to love. It was quiet here, always has been. It was perfect to receive her messages.
She looked up at the stars, spotting the constellations with minimal effort. She had grown up watching them, knowing which was which, every star in their celestial picture.
'Beetleguese is lower tonight it seems like... he must be trying to tell me something,' she thought. All the stars had personalities, that's what held them apart from one another.
Beetlegeuse was mischievous and fun loving, full of energy as he delivered her his messages.
Eerie was soft spoken and shy, not finding any reason to shout as she was much closer.
North was always so distant to her, only rarely did he ever give a message, too lost in his mind as he drifted farther and farther away during summertime.
The girl continued to watch, humming softly to herself as she listened to them. It was her job, she was the Oracle, she was their priestess, their messager of the stars.
But, even she started to wonder if it was all worth it. Staying out all night, watching the stars, putting herself at potential risk of any dangers watching her.
But her Commander looked after her, he knew what to do. He knew what was best.
She took a breath, lowering her head, looking down at the sand. Nights like these are always so lonely... so lonely since he died.
The sound of soft footsteps made the girl look up and over her shoulder, spotting a familiar pair of coats. One of the two wore a dark green coat, hood pulled over her long blond hair, bangs hanging over her eyes. The other wore an orange coat, black hair barely poking out from underneath it.
The girl in green greeted her, dipping her head with respect. "Oracle Rain, the Commander sent us to ask if you have gained any word," she stated.
The girl in yellow, Rain, shook her head, a hand trailing up as she began to play with her braid. "Nothing yet. The clouds are gathering tonight, if the stars want to speak, it's hard to hear them right now," she explained.
She looked back up, spotting the heavy clouds overhead. It didn't look like rainclouds, but the gray coloring didn't seem right.
"I'll report as soon as I receive word," Rain finished. The two nodded, briefly giving her a goodbye before turning to leave.
"Oh, wait, Two, One, could you please bring me back something to eat please? Nosebleed pointed out I should probably start eating more while I wait," Rain requested quickly.
The girl, Two, nodded. "Of course, we'll see what we can find," she said with a small smile.
Without another word between the three, the two scouts left, leaving Rain alone with herself and the stars once more. She watched them leave, waited a few extra minutes, before letting out a sigh.
She looked back up, trying to listen for any word. Nothing, it was like the stars didn't even recognize her tonight. They haven't spoken in a week, which was odd as Beetlegeuse could never seem to shut up when she spoke with them.
"Is something wrong?" She mumbled under her breath.
The wind blew a bit harsher, blowing her bangs to the side with minimal effort. She ran a hand up, brush them back into place.
"Kid, somethin's wrong, we're talkin' hella wrong,"
Rain blinked, recognizing the voice coming from the east of her. She glanced up at the constellation of Orion, seeing the celestial hunter's head, the star of Beetlegeuse.
"So you do have something for me..."
"Yeah, about time I got through those clouds. Look, I don't know how much time you got, but you listen and you need to listen good. Somethin's wrong with the rebellion, there's somethin' brewin' and it ain't good, cheif,"
"Wrong in the rebellion?"
"Did I stutter? Yes, somethin's wrong! See here, you're gonna have to figure this out like the rest of us, we can only see what we can see from here in the sky, and whatever it was, we didn't see. Hell, Venus didn't even see it and she's a lot closer than us. Don't tell anyone, we don't wanna a panic goin' on, the last thing we need is more trouble stirrin'."
Rain was dumbfounded, trying to wrap her head around it.
"What are you--"
"Oracle Rain, we got your food!"
The sky suddenly shut up as Rain was brought back by the voice. She turned, seeing Two and One come back, small pieces of bread and mice in their grasp.
She gave a smile as they came near, happily accepting the food items.
"Thank you,"
"Any word yet?" One asked, holding onto his orange coat as another blast of wind came from the sea in front of them.
After it died back down, Rain shook her head, remembering the voice's words. "No, I think the clouds are blocking us tonight. I might have to cut this meeting short because of it."
The two scouts gave a nod. "Alright, we'll escort you back to camp," Two said. Rain nodded, taking a bite of her bread as they began to make their way back through the forest behind them.
"Stay on your toes, kid. Last thing we need another one of you dead."
