Chapter Text

Daichi blinked his eyes open and quickly closed them due to the bright lights above him. He heard the scraping of a chair and the light that was shining on his eyelids had dimmed down. His body visibly relaxed and he slowly opened his eyes and blinked to get rid of the blur in his vision.

“Daichi?”

The voice was warm and soft. It was caring and it also sounded very familiar. He turned his head to the side and saw Suga sitting on the chair, a worried look in his eyes.

“Suga?”

Suga slumped onto the chair in relief. He looked up and Daichi thought that he was staring down the devil. He gulped nervously and looked anywhere else, but Suga.

The Setter grabbed at Daichi’s face with one hand and forced the shorter male to look at him.

“Sawamura Daichi.”

Daichi looked at Suga and tried his best to look like a kicked puppy to spare himself from Suga’s lectures. Too bad, Suga wasn’t falling for it.

(He almost did though.)

“WHAT THE HELL WERE YOU THINKING DAICHI?”

“I—“

Suga crossed his arms over his chest and shook his head.

“No, you listen to me and listen good Sawamura.”

Daichi could only nod dumbly.

“Hah. Daichi what the hell were you thinking? We thought that we had done something wrong. That we did something to upset you. But clearly it wasn’t that. So, we scrambled to figure out what was wrong with you. Your mother texted me las ring the side you had been skipping out on dinners and working on homework to who knows when. Just when Kiyoko, Asahi, and I were trying to figure out why you would do this to yourself. You end up collapsing at practice. You know what the nurse told Takeda-sensei and I? That you were dehydrated, malnourished, and suffered from insomnia. Not to mention a fever in addition to all of that. So, again I ask, what the hell were you thinking?”

Daichi felt his mouth open and close like a fish out of water. Did he really collapse at practice? Was he so weak that he let his guard down at practice in front of them? He was supposed to becoming stronger and yet, his progress was all for naught if he collapsed in front of them.

Suga watched as tears sprung into Daichi’s eyes and he tightened his hold on the blanket that was covering his shivering form. Suga huffed out and inhale deeply to quell his emotions. Daichi was in a state where yelling at him wasn’t going to help the situation. He plopped down into the chair next to the bed and quietly stared out the window.

“You know, when I took the position of Vice Captain, I made a promise to myself that I would always stand by your side and help you with whatever was going on with the team. I also promised myself when we got together that I would help you with whatever you needed help with.”

Daichi listened to his boyfriend’s rant, wondering where the conversation was leading up to. The next words that came from the silver haired male’s mouth made his blood freeze.

“Maybe I don’t deserve to stand by your side. I made myself too comfortable with the fact that you were always in control. I let you take too much of the reigns when it came to discipling them. I’ve failed you as much as I’ve failed the team.”

Daichi froze in his spot on the bed. The blood in his veins hurt when they passed throughout his body. They felt like tiny little pins stabbing at every inch of his body. Daichi was supposed tone saying those words. What kind of Captain was he, if he relied on his juniors to win every game for them. Yeah, he and the other third years preached about always being together and playing as a team, but the difference between them was a great and everyone could see it. If anything, Daichi was the one who wasn’t worthy of his position. Daichi whimpered and gripped onto Suga’s sleeve.

“No, you’re not the failure. I am.”

The frustrations that had plagued Daichi for the longest time finally came spilling out his mouth. Suga listened intently. He had failed to keep an eye on Daichi and help him with his problems. He failed once, he wasn’t going to do that again. The longer Daichi went on, the more Suga felt his heart sank.

‘Oh my god…did he really go through all of that on his own? No wonder, he was so tired and skinny looking. Damn, we need to do better. I need to do better.’

Daichi had finally finished his rant and the two sat in silence. One in silent contemplation and the other in self-judgment. Suga finally sighed and gently held Daichi’s hand.

“First, Daichi, want to thank you for trusting me in telling me what was bothering you. Secondly, I want you to know that if you have any probmens, then don’t be afraid to come to any of the other third years or even Take-chan or Ukai. That’s what we’re here for. As for your little habits, we’ll work on them. For now, what you need to do is eat and get some rest.”

Daichi was about to protest, but as soon as he caught a smell of the broth that Suga had, his stomach growled loudly. The silver haired male stifled a laugh into his hand and handed the broth. Suga leaned over and lifted up a bag.

“I also asked Shimizu to run to the konbi and grab a few bentos for you.”

Daichi was resting back on the bed after finishing the broth and three bentos. Suga leaned over and pecked Daichi on the forehead.

“I’ll always be here for you, my love.”

Daichi smiled and huffed out a laugh. The door flew open and the members of the team barged in. Daichi greeted them and asked them how the rest of practice went. Daichi was proud when. Ennoshita and Asahi stepped up and took over practice.he was proud of the both of them and he knew that Ennoshita will do a wonderful job of leading the team next year. Daichi still had a long path ahead of him to help him get back to normal, but with a team; a family like Karasuno, he knows that he will be just fine.
