When the Sun and Moon Fall

Chapter 12: The Sun and Moon Fall

Notes:

-The Rendezvous, Part II-

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

In Yuuri’s mind, everything slots into place and he gains a better understanding of the world and his role in it. Ever since divulging her plan to bring balance, Minako-sensei has taken every opportunity to remind Yuuri of his destiny and place in the world. She often took it upon herself to make things happen. She even co-founded an organization with Lilia Baranovskaya and together they created Operation Moonfall.

Mrs. Baranovskaya was the puppetmaster behind the scenes who gathered intel and controlled the tides of public opinion— pulling the strings in preparation for the Tsar’s overthrow. Minako-sensei was the mastermind that came up with the ideas and orchestrated most of the meetings and plans. As far as Yuuri knows, he’s the only person fully aware of both women’s involvement.

However, as much as Minako is passionate about her plan, Yuuri is beginning to reconsider it. If it’s destiny for the Sun and Moon to fall, then it will happen no matter what. Perhaps things won’t play out in the same way she first thought. It’s important to always expect the unexpected!

Not to mention, her plan “Operation Moonfall” only takes into account the fall of the Moon, or rather the Moon Realm. The Sun must fall with it, something Minako-sensei failed to take into consideration. Whatever that entails, they’ll just have to wait and find out.

“It is a matter of when,” Yuuri utters. “When the Sun and Moon fall…”

“—there’ll be balance,” Viktor finishes. “Why are you bringing this up? Is it relevant?”

“Completely— it has everything to do with us,” Yuuri says with resolve and purpose. “The prophecy is referring to us! We are the descendants of a long line of Moon- and Suncaster rulers respectively. As the next generation, we will have to be the ones to bring about balance.”

Viktor and Yuuri’s meetings were no coincidence. It was as if fate was pushing them together. Out of every town in the Sun Kingdom, what are the odds that Viktor happened to visit Hasetsu during the festival? What are the odds that Yuuri happened to see Viktor’s performance during that skating competition?

How about the fact that not only did they have a chance encounter in a hallway in a foreign country neither of them are supposed to be in, but they also met again at a party. And still after parting ways once more, fate wasn’t finished meddling with their lives. Yuuri caught Viktor the exact time he was searching his room. All this has to be some sort of sign!

“Neither of us can bring balance alone. We need to do it together,” Yuuri says. “We will make it happen. This is where our destiny lies.”

Viktor contemplates this at first, before finally agreeing.

“By the way, do you know someone by the name of Minako Okukawa?” Viktor asks, momentarily surprising Yuuri with the question.

“Yes, I was her pupil before she retired. Why? Have you met her?”

“Earlier, she talked to me about her plan to bring balance.”

Oh no. What did Minako tell Viktor?

“It was mostly discussing what my element of surprise could bring to the table,” Viktor says.

“That’s good, I think she’s on to something with that, but I’m more concerned about how she is involving you in her scheme. Minako-sensei is a little obsessed with the prophecy and finding solutions for it. However, I don’t think she’s close at all.”

“What do you think of the prophecy then?” Viktor asks.

“I believe that the answer will present itself, in due time. It’s a poem with many possible interpretations. The truth may be surprising...”

Yuuri says this not only referring to the prophecy, but secretly alluding to himself. No one would expect that someone as unassuming as Yuuri would have a completely different side to him. Therefore it would come as a shock that Yuuri is actually a Mooncaster that possesses both lunar and solar abilities.

“I think we all have our own surprises too,” Viktor says as he intently stares at Yuuri. “I love surprises— I’d like to see what you have to offer.”

Nothing Viktor can find out about! All of Yuuri's surprises will unfortunately have to stay buried for the foreseeable future. Yuuri’s coronation is coming up, and Viktor is taking up a large presence in Yuuri’s life at the moment. Now’s not the time for a scandal!

Unable to think of a way to respond, Yuuri answers with a vague, “One day”. He turns away from Viktor to look outside the window. They’re almost at the restaurant.

“I always expect the unexpected— I learned that from you,” Yuuri says, back still turned. “Life has a way of always managing to surprise us.”

“I think you’ve been nothing short of surprises ever since I met you. I was certainly taken off guard when you suddenly hugged me last night. What was that about?”

Yuuri is mortified when Viktor brings it up, and sinks into the seat in dismay.

“Okay then, can you tell me why you chose to bring me here?” Viktor asks instead.

Yuuri’s face lights up and he answers the new question with fervour. “I came here a lot when I was younger. Hasetsu is like my second home, and I know this town like the back of my hand. The restaurant we will visit has been in business for centuries, and is renowned for its traditional food and delicacies. I haven’t been able to come as often anymore, but I’ve managed to convince my family to let me celebrate my birthday here every year, instead of a customary celebratory banquet.”

“So it sounds like it’s a good place to have this evening’s dinner! How about the beach? Besides it being a popular place to go, does it have personal significance to you too?”

“Yes actually. That place is very special to me. I spent a lot of time there.” Most of it was spent honing his lunar elemental abilities, but Yuuri can’t say that! “When I have the time to spare, sometimes I come down by the shore to just have some time to myself. You’re actually the first person I’ve brought with me in a while!”

Viktor thinks it’s sweet that Yuuri is sharing a place so important to him, but at the same time Viktor feels irritated. Not at Yuuri, but at what he said. His experience sounded oddly familiar but Viktor cannot pinpoint why. It’s like he has met Yuuri before. The more Viktor thinks about it, the more confused he is. Maybe if they talk more, he’ll find out something that will make sense of everything.

However, before Viktor can look deeper into the enigma that is Yuuri Katsuki, the carriage abruptly stops. Yuuri opens the door and climbs out, and that’s when Viktor realizes they’ve arrived at their destination.

As Viktor steps into the restaurant, he is hit with the most amazing scents and aromas. Yuuri wasn’t understating how good this place is!

All heavy topics are brushed aside as Viktor and Yuuri dine. They order their dishes, including two bowls of katsudon. As Viktor eats, he contemplates how he managed to live his whole life without ever tasting this food from heaven!

As the two are finishing up their meals, a strange thought suddenly crosses Viktor’s mind. Could this be a date?

It’s true that Yuuri has feelings for Viktor. Even if he never admitted it, it was evident nonetheless. Yuuri speaks as though he has a million things to tell Viktor, but only now does he have the opportunity to voice them. Yuuri also has this juxtaposition within him— he shows a deep desire or want relating to Viktor, but also tries to restrain himself and suppress his feelings.

Technically they are doing date-like things— spending time with one another, engaging in meaningful hobbies, having dinner together— but it’s all under the guise of strengthening international relations by getting to know each other on a more personal level.

What is really going on here?

What is Yuuri even doing right now?! Currently, he’s seated across the table from the source of all his emotional confusion, Viktor Nikiforov. Yuuri didn’t think this far ahead, or think things over at all for that matter.

The very act of having dinner with Viktor is even enough to distract Yuuri from the fact that he is eating his favourite food of all time! His poor bowl of katsudon doesn’t stand a chance.

Okay, so Yuuri completed his plan to meet with Viktor and eat out. What now?

“Umm… Viktor?”

“Yes?”

“Is there anywhere you want to go to after dinner?”

After thinking for a few seconds, Viktor shakes his head. “Not really, I just wanted to go with whatever you had in mind.”

“Okay, so if you don’t oppose… would you like to return to the beach to watch the sunset? It’s always a really beautiful view!”

“Sure.”

“Really?” Yuuri asks in disbelief. He didn’t think Viktor would be interested.

“If you really want to go, I’ll come along,” Viktor says, almost dismissively. Not in a way that suggests he doesn’t care, more that he doesn’t mind and can’t believe Yuuri is doubting the fact that he wants to come along. Is Yuuri reading too much into the tone of Viktor’s words? Probably.

Sunset is one of Yuuri’s favourite times. It’s the turning point when day turns to night. Night follows sunset, which provides Yuuri time alone after a long and busy day.

Today’s sunset is special; he is spending it with Viktor.

The two are seated together on a ledge by the shore. The crash of calm waves and squawking of seagulls can be heard in the background, but the noises are drowned out by the sound of Yuuri’s pounding heart.

To his right, Viktor sits idly and contentedly, watching the view and basking in the Sun’s warm, golden glow. The blue of his eyes remains just as striking, matching the hue of the azure seas.

Yuuri lets out a breath. He is finally where he is meant to be.

None of this was an accident nor a mistake. It was fate. He and Viktor weren’t star-crossed; they were destined by the stars to always cross paths.

During dawn and dusk, it’s neither day nor night. During these phases of transition are when the Sun and Moon cross paths. At dawn the Moon falls, and at dusk, the Sun.

What does it mean to fall? There are downfalls, the kind Yuuri has always feared. He’s heard plenty of stories of those who fell from grace, or were considered “fallen stars”. There are also falling outs and the fallout from them. Things can fall into place, or fall into chaos.

Who or what is the “Sun” that is destined to fall? Will the Kingdom of the Sun fall during Yuuri’s reign?

The fiery dance and moonlit skate specified in the poem have already been fulfilled. This leads Yuuri to believe that it really is himself and Viktor who the prophecy is concerning. The only problem is that they are both Mooncasters, so how would it be balanced?

Although, Minako-sensei did mention there was someone out there that harboured both solar and lunar abilities, just like Yuuri. A person who lives in the Moon Realm pretending to be a Mooncaster when they are truly a Suncaster…

Never mind. Although luck has seemed to be on Yuuri’s side recently, this might be too good to be true. However, Yuuri can’t deny Viktor’s tangible similarities with the Sun.

Perhaps the prophecy is instead referring to the fact that they are the Sun and Moon Princes?

However this is all just speculation. The prophecy is too vague for Yuuri to figure it out.

Does everything always have to come back to the prophecy? The damn prophecy that he devoted so much time and thought into. Apparently it is his destiny to bring it to fruition. Minako-sensei even thinks that the prophecy is his destiny.

No, Yuuri won’t let a millenia old poem dictate how he is going to live his life.

His life won’t revolve around the prophecy; the prophecy will be shaped by how Yuuri lives his life. Yuuri will do what he wants, and his fate will be fulfilled regardless.

Viktor taught him that sometimes the best way to live your life is with spontaneity. Viktor is known to do the opposite of what his audience expects. Can’t Yuuri do the same?

All Yuuri needs is a push. Some courage to make a bold move. Perhaps some aspects of Viktor rubbed off on Yuuri, because he’s no longer afraid.

Because of Viktor, Yuuri is free; free from the chains of self-doubt and fear holding him back. Because of Viktor, Yuuri will finally be able to let his light shine.

It all started on the night of the masquerade. It was the birth of Eros. Yuuri used to see it as just him playing a character, but it’s more than that. It’s a persona that is part of Yuuri— a side he has suppressed for his entire life. The side that is bold, fearless, and willing to take risks. Since that night, Yuuri has adopted some of those traits, even getting the courage to ask Viktor out for dinner together.

Yuuri is Eros, and Eros is Yuuri. It was always all Yuuri.

Viktor fell in love with a part of Yuuri. Now, Yuuri must make him fall again.

Yuuri is no longer afraid of a relationship. No more fear of making mistakes. Sometimes risk pays off, and Yuuri is now willing to risk everything for the chance to be with Viktor.

Over the course of the day, Yuuri has warmed up and opened up to Viktor. Yuuri’s feelings are also quite apparent. Yuuri has made his decision and is ready for whatever might come. Now it’s all down to what Viktor chooses.

Whether or not things work out, Yuuri will still be grateful for having had the opportunity to even meet Viktor.

Out of everyone in the world, Viktor took an interest in Yuuri! Even at the masquerade when Viktor knew nothing about who he was, Viktor made the advance and chose to spend the rest of his night with him. Viktor opened up his heart to Yuuri, even skating that routine just for him…

"If only I could see you, eternity will be born from hope. Stay close to me, don’t leave me. I’m afraid of losing you."

Viktor… If you could just see that it is I who has been here all this time. You just need to open your eyes and heart so you can find what you are looking for.

If he had never met Viktor that night, Yuuri would probably be completely focused on work and dedicating himself to his new role. Possibly even ending up down the same path Mari did, losing himself in the process.

Yuuri now has the courage to stray from the path people expect of him. Yuuri can bring balance without having to stick to Minako’s plan. Yuuri doesn’t have to be a conventional Emperor. It’s okay for him to forge his own path.

This new, changed Yuuri is all thanks to Viktor. Yuuri wishes he could give back to him and show Viktor how important he is to him.

“I’m glad to have met you,” Yuuri says. There’s so much more he wants to say. He wants to thank Viktor for the imprint he has left on Yuuri’s life, but now isn’t the time yet.

“Likewise,” Viktor agrees, his signature heart-shaped smile beaming. Of course this is not the first time Yuuri has seen Viktor smile. He has seen his press smile countless times. As Eros, he bore witness to Viktor’s real smile plenty of times too. But when Viktor smiles at Yuuri being himself, nothing else is comparable.

It's a genuine and sincere smile with no hint of strain, as if Viktor is truly happy to be in Yuuri’s presence! If only Yuuri could make him that happy all the time.

“Despite getting off on the wrong foot, meeting you made it all worth it,” Viktor says. He breaks his gaze from Yuuri and looks off into the distance. That’s when Yuuri realizes Viktor had his gaze on him until now.

The whole world is bathed in a brilliant orange.

Viktor has his eyes on the horizon, the lines where the sea and sky touch.

He is lost in thought in the same way someone might be lost at sea.

In his mind is Yuuri Katsuki.

Why? Viktor doesn’t know.

Why was Viktor so inspired by Yuuri’s fire dance at the festival? He has seen several fire dances afterwards, but Yuuri’s performance always stuck with him.

“How could I ever forget you after witnessing one of your performances?”

What Yuuri said earlier… Viktor finds the same statement true for himself. Viktor never forgot about Yuuri either. He may have failed to recognize him, but Yuuri always remained in his subconscious. It’s unfortunate that Viktor never found out Yuuri was the fire dancer until yesterday. Before then, Viktor even thought that he was Eros, until Eros began skating and demonstrated his lunar affinity.

It’s really strange to find out something that retroactively changes everything you thought you knew. It’s like what Minako said about unexpected variables and revelations.

Viktor had often wondered what happened to the boy at the festival. It turns out that the boy at the festival had always been Yuuri. Every time Viktor dwelled on those past memories, he had been thinking of Yuuri!

Yuuri was the kid who nervously stood on stage. Yuuri’s fire dance was the first time Viktor had seen fire used for creation rather than destruction. Yuuri helped Viktor see his abilities in a positive light for the first time.

Although Yuuri’s physical limitations held him back, he made up for it by putting his whole heart and soul into the dance, as if it was an extension of himself.

He created art out of thin air. His displays of fire, however humble, were mesmerizing and beautiful.

Yuuri gave Viktor hope that there would always be good in the world. There are people out there who live to do good. Even fire, often used to burn and destroy, can be beautiful and life-giving. Things as small as a spark of hope can light a large fire.

After returning to the Moon Realm, the Tsar did everything in his power to crush Viktor’s resolve. He did a pretty good job, except Viktor still held on to the spark Yuuri gave him. He carefully tended it and kept it from dying. The spark was a sign of better things to come.

Surprisingly, Yuuri himself is one of those better things. Meeting him over a decade later, a lot has changed, but not Yuuri’s spirit and determination.

Even if all the odds are against Yuuri, he still tries his best. Because of this aspect of him, this makes Viktor believe that there is no one more fit to become the Sun Emperor. Viktor has no doubt that Yuuri can be a great ruler. Yuuri may not be very confident in his own abilities, but his determination and motivation will definitely make up for it.

Viktor is glad that Yuuri accepted his help. Yuuri is very close to fulfilling his goals. He just needs some guidance, which Viktor thinks he can provide for him, especially with their commonalities and near-identical positions in society.

It also gives him a chance to stay with Yuuri. Yuuri is the only person in the world that Viktor feels truly understands him. Yuuri is also one of the most accepting people he has met.

It’s not often you come across someone like Yuuri Katsuki. Viktor can’t let him go just yet.

At the corner of Viktor’s eye, he sees flickering lights and little embers hovering in the air.

He turns around to see Yuuri happily sending little fiery butterflies his way.

The glowing butterflies circle Viktor a couple times before their fire dissipates. After a few seconds, they’re reborn in a burst of flame shaped as a pair of birds.

Viktor can’t take his eyes off the fiery spectacle. Yuuri has greatly improved since the last time, and his creations are brimmed with beauty and life.

Yuuri then creates bright orange tornadoes; spirals of fire that travel through the air. The spirals split into ribbons that loop around and create fiery designs in the sky, not unlike compulsory figures.

After playing around a bit, Yuuri makes all the fire vanish with a snap of his fingers. The beach is dark except for one small, blue flame that wanders aimlessly through the air.

Yuuri seems to be trying to tell a story. One of sadness, solitude, and longing. Viktor has been all too familiar with those feelings in recent years. It was even the inspiration of a skating routine Viktor created.

Along comes a second flame, one bigger and brighter. This orange flame joins the blue and together they dance through the air.

There’s no more pain. Only joy and hope. The desire to create a story worth telling and live a life worth living; a life of love.

Suddenly, both flames are separated.

Hundreds of little sparks come into existence; little yellow stars that light the air. They fill the large distance between the two flames.

Viktor had been so distracted by the performance that he forgot Yuuri was still here until the other walked straight through the lights. Yuuri brings the blue and orange flames together, to circle in an infinite loop; unity and balance.

The story should be done, but it feels like something is missing, and Viktor can tell that Yuuri thinks that too. It was objectively beautiful and performed with a lot of nuance and skill. Despite this, it seems like Yuuri felt held back by this medium. It’s as if there is something he wants to add, but can’t or won’t.

Suddenly, Yuuri closes his fist and all the fire fizzles away, leaving just him and Viktor alone on the dark beach again.

Viktor notices Yuuri looking at the water in longing, and that’s when Viktor pulls some water out of the sea. The water then begins to twirl in the air in an aquatic dance.

Yuuri’s face lights up and he gives life to his fire once more, the two elements working together in harmony.

That must have been what Yuuri’s performance was lacking! He felt that he needed both the water and fire to complete his story!

Viktor’s water and Yuuri’s fire danced together in such unity, coordination and consonance. It would be hard to believe that it was all unplanned.

Yuuri’s story started out as a response to Viktor’s performance during the moonlit skate. His interpretation began hollow and hopeless, as Viktor’s had. Yuuri tried to convey hope and balance after reuniting the two flames, but it was still lacking something. It was emotionally resonant, but a story left unfinished. At least, it was until Viktor and Yuuri worked together, combining their abilities of water and fire.

Yuuri can complete Viktor’s story, and Viktor can complete Yuuri’s. Their individual journeys converge. Now, will they move forward together, or diverge once more?

Yuuri knows in his heart that Viktor is the person he wants to stay with. He wants nothing more than to be with Viktor, to see Viktor happy, to make Viktor smile. Yuuri’s soul feels complete when they are together.

“I didn’t have to meet you to know that I’d like you,” Yuuri confesses. “I fell in love with your skating the very first time I watched you. I fell for you, Viktor, not long after I left you.”

Viktor looks thunderstruck. Well, Viktor did say he wanted Yuuri to surprise him.

“You inspired me so much over the years. I even started skating because of you. But I don’t see you only for your looks and talent, but also your heart. You can endure emotional hardship and loss, yet still continue to love.”

“In turn, all you want is to be loved,” Yuuri says in earnest. “You pursued skating as you sought out your father’s love. You treasured the love your fans had for you. Still, there’s a void within you that can’t be filled. That’s why you gravitated towards Eros, a person you thought could make you complete.”

“What is your point? You think that you could make me complete?” Viktor asks, still stunned by everything Yuuri had just revealed.

“I can’t say that, but at the very least I know that you make me feel complete.”

With that, Viktor is left nonplussed and with time to reflect as Yuuri gets up to once again watch the view. The Sun steadily falls from the sky, its distance from the horizon shrinking every second. Twilight, the time of ambiguity and descent, approaches.

How is Yuuri so calm right now? As he peacefully watches the sunset and acts as if he didn’t just declare his love for Viktor, Viktor is trying to simply process everything that was said.

Yuuri fell for him after leaving him? When? At the skating rink after Viktor humiliated them both in front of everyone, Yuuri fell in love?!

Did Yuuri say that he really skates? And he started skating because of Viktor?!

Viktor was simply shocked by the fact that Yuuri even watches skating competitions, but now to find out that Yuuri himself actually skates is on a whole different scale.

Finding out Eros was a charlatan, only to then be recruited by an enchantress in a magical bar for the sake of bringing balance to the world was much easier to digest than what Yuuri just divulged right now.

On the surface level, Yuuri admitted he loves Viktor, but Viktor already knew that. It’s the subtext that has Viktor’s head reeling. Yuuri might not have intended it, but he left enough clues for Viktor to solve the puzzle.

It all makes sense now— the clarity of verity.

A Sun Kingdom prince first seen on the day of the masquerade; a person with deep ties to Hasetsu; a dancer and skater; acquainted with Christophe Giacometti; has light skin, ebony hair, and dark umber eyes; someone distant and solitary who can demonstrate both great zeal and sincere intimacy; a man who fled from Viktor not long after their first meeting.

There are two names that come to mind, yet only one face.

Minako told of a pupil of hers who bore both solar and lunar abilities. He is a Mooncaster living in the Sun Kingdom. He tried his best to be ordinary despite being extraordinary. This person has the other half of Viktor’s soul, and Viktor has his. They’re soulmates.

His soulmate is the sea to Viktor’s fierce blaze; a calm calamity— vast and bottomless with much still left unexplored. Viktor embodies the infinite stars that illuminate the night sky; casting an eternal light that overcomes the shadows plunging them all into darkness.

They complete each other, in the same way the Sun and Moon balance one another.

They’ve completely fallen for each other, in the same way the Sun and Moon were foretold to.

Yuuri watches the Sun fall beneath the horizon, and the night descends on the kingdom. Viktor joins his side and together they observe the shimmering stars slowly speckling the darkened sky.

It really is a beautiful sight, but not as beautiful as the man beside him.

It seems Viktor has made up his mind, because he takes Yuuri’s hand in his. Yuuri silently thanks the stars. Viktor is giving him a chance, one that Yuuri won’t take for granted.

Yuuri holds Viktor’s hand tight, never wanting to let go.

Not again, not ever.

As long as they’re together, nothing can go wrong. Whatever happens, they’ll be able to face it.

I found you.

After searching for so long, they’re finally reunited.

Yuuri has been here with him for all these years. What did it take to finally see it?

Yuuri is the fire dancer that once inspired Viktor and showed him life. Yuuri is the stranger that stole Viktor’s heart and showed him love. Yuuri is Viktor’s soulmate, the love of his life.

Viktor releases Yuuri’s hand in order to cup his face. Large, piercing dark eyes look back at him. Viktor looks onto the face of the man he had spent so much time longing and searching for.

I can see you now!

Circumstance forced them apart, but chance brought them back together.

“I treasure the time I spent with you. I don’t want to leave— I wish I could stay by your side.”

You don’t have to leave anymore. You’ll never feel like you have to run away. Yuuri, you can stay by my side now.

Before Viktor can even speak a single word, Yuuri’s single action speaks thousands. With a swift movement, the Mooncaster thrusts his body forwards and catches Viktor’s lips in a kiss.

After jolting in surprise, Viktor accepts it and kisses Yuuri back. Viktor’s arms wrap around Yuuri’s back, and Yuuri’s around Viktor’s neck. They fit together perfectly, like they are two halves of a whole.

Viktor can hear Yuuri’s heartbeat; it beats in unison with his own as if they were one. They hold one another close, not wanting to lose each other again.

Our bodies and heartbeats become one. We can leave on our journey together. I’m ready now.

For a few seconds, Yuuri feels like he has an out-of-body experience. Even after he and Viktor break away, Yuuri takes a few moments to catch his breath and compose himself. His brightly flushing face and racing heart are remnants of a moment of pure bliss.

Yuuri touches his lips; he and Viktor kissed! It wasn’t out of passion and lust, but something deeper and more meaningful. That kiss brought emotions deeper than the seas, and felt like the culmination of a thousand years of waiting.

Yuuri and Viktor stand alone together, outside under the sea of stars. Despite the grand celestial spectacle right above his head, Yuuri only has his eyes set on the man before him, who dawns a smile that could outshine even the brightest stars. The man who has provided Yuuri with inspiration and motivation for many years, who gives Yuuri a reason to keep going. The man who brought light into Yuuri’s life.

“Viktor…”

“Yes Yuuri?”

“Ah, nothing,” Yuuri says as he looks away shyly. It’s just that I like saying your name, Yuuri thinks.

“What is it, Yuuri?”

“Um, I find it interesting that the Moon itself doesn’t glow. The light you see is actually just sunlight reflected off of the Moon’s surface,” Yuuri says instead.

“Maybe the Moon just needs a little help to shine,” Viktor responds. “I’m fond of the Moon; it’s beautiful and unique. The Sun is just a star, and there are billions of those. The Moon is special. Right now, there’s only one Moon I can see.” Surprisingly, Viktor doesn’t say this as he looks up to the sky— his eyes stay fixed to Yuuri.

“When the world is at its darkest time, the Moon shines strongest,” Viktor continues. “The Moon may have moments when it is taken over by shadows, but it still remains the brightest object in the night sky.”

“But the Sun is thousands of times brighter and larger, and it’s arguably more important than the Moon because of its role in the world,” Yuuri contests.

“However, the Sun sits alone in the sky, high up and isolated… Who would want that?” Viktor asks.

“Perhaps the Moon could rise up to meet it…” Yuuri ponders.

“After dawn the Sun shall peak and burn bright—”

“Then the Moon will rise, turning day to night.” That’s when Yuuri realizes what Viktor was hinting at.

“It’s me! Us! Together, we will rise.”

When the Sun and Moon fall, there’ll be balance. However, even if it defies the stars, Yuuri and Viktor will rise again. Together, they can overcome anything. Reuniting is not the end; their story is only beginning.

“Will you stay close to me, my Yuuri?”

“Forever. I won’t ever leave your side. If we ever get lost, we’ll find each other again. That’s the only thing I know for certain.”

Ink to paper, a new story is written. One that will be fulfilled, not because of fate, but through sheer hard work and will. This story is their own; a life they willingly choose to lead.

Some say fate is written in the stars. One’s destination in life may be destined, but their journey there is up to them.

Soon, a prince will rise up to lead and unify a nation.

Soon, a prince will rise up against his father and rebuild what is left behind.

Their missions won’t be easy, but they will never have to bear the weight alone.

They will fall together. They will rise together.

They live for each other. They love one another.

Their duty is to bring balance. Their destiny is to do it together.

There once was balance between day and night;

We’ll set the world alight and make things right.

The nations will unite under one name;

Suncasters, Mooncasters— we’re all the same.

We’ll win with love, evil will face defeat;

Together we’re stronger; we are complete.

We’ll rise with the tides and fall with the snow;

We balance each other in ebb and flow.

We’ll rise from the ash or go down in flames;

We’ll reclaim what was lost and win the games.

We’ll find purpose, passion and victory;

We’ll rewrite the stars and make history.

Our destiny is our’s to define;

Together we’ll bring balance for all time.

Thank you so much for making it to the end of my story <3 As I've said before, this is the first fanfic I've ever written. This was way more work than I expected and longer than I anticipated, but I think it was worth it in the end. I enjoyed writing it, and I hoped you enjoyed reading it!

I tried my best to tie in things from the previous chapters and finish Yuuri and Viktor's arcs, so that thing's feel complete. Kind of how they complete each other. I really like the idea that this story is about them finding themselves and each other, more of an internal conflict. The next installment will be more heavily involved in external conflicts and other characters, particularly about Operation Moonfall and governing now that Yuuri is getting his new position and Viktor will now have to once again face his father and all the problems he had been avoiding. Their goals won't be as straight-forward as they thought, which makes everything more interesting.

Some notes about writing this chapter; I wrote this pretending it was a show. For example, each chapter is an episode and they are pretty dialogue-heavy/driven. I also picked 12 chapters because YOI has 12 episodes, and 12 happens to be my favourite number :)
Making the poem was fun. It was something I came up with on a whim, but I think it works really well and ties the whole story together.
I didn't plan for chapter 11 and 12 to even turn out the way that they did. I planned to gloss over this whole event and time jump to when they were already dating. Basically to have everything implied without explicitly detailing the specific events and how it went down. Also, I planned to have them either married or Yuuri coronated by the end of ch. 12.

This whole story actually never went the way I planned. Ironic, because I'm writing about how Yuuri and Viktor's lives are full of surprises. This was supposed to be a 20 000 word story about a mistaken-identity story involving the masquerade. However this evolved into so much more!

This is definitely not the end of the story, but I'm still deciding what I should make next. Before "When the Sun and Moon Rise" I want to write a shorter story about the other character's POVs. I've planted the seeds for interesting arcs throughout my work, and plan to flesh them out later. For example, Yuri and JJ's interactions during the masquerade were mentioned for a reason... Also, what is up with Seung-gil? There's more to him that meets the eye. How about Phichit's own misadventures and his struggle to prove his innocence? How about Chris's backstory; how did he get involved in Operation Moonfall? Not to mention, Minako and Lilia have their own plan's going on in the background.

All the characters have their own journeys, which happen to intertwine with everyone else's and plays into the large overarcing narrative. I hope to one day bring it all to fruition :)
