Chapter 3: let’s dance along to the beat of our hearts

Chapter Text

Eula considered changing plans when she and Amber were confronted with the cold wind gusts of the stream’s shore. Luckily, she had stopped by her quarters on the way to talk to Kaeya to grab blankets, and Amber’s features still showed an almost childish excitement. They placed the blanket on the grass a few meters behind the rocks that surrounded the water. Eula opted to stay a few meters away from Vanessa’s tree, knowing that Jean was often there to seek guidance and the reconnaissance captain wasn’t in the mood to have her conversation interrupted by anyone.

Both women sat comfortably by each other’s side as Amber began to unpack the foods she had purchased at the good hunter. Moon pies, mushroom pizza and an apple pie for dessert, all carefully placed on the blanket. It didn’t take long for the outrider to start talking excitedly about whatever crossed her mind, making random comments and remembering funny moments she had gone through lately. That was one of Amber’s characteristics Eula appreciated the most. The girl never let anyone fall into an uncomfortable silence.

After finishing a very pleasant meal, Amber cleaning her mouth with a huge dorky happy smile on her face, they put their plates and drinks aside, suddenly feeling chills on their arms as the wind got cooler.

“Cold?” Eula asked, noticing how Amber went quiet and started rubbing her arms all of a sudden.

“A bit” Amber chuckled, her lips trembling slightly.

“You’re always like this” a discreet smile formed on Eula’s lips as she shook her head and turned to the bag she had brought from her quarters “Here”

The taller woman picked another blanket, softer and a bit smaller, probably taken from her bed at the last second. She immediately wrapped it around the outrider’s shoulders, making her stop and stare at her. Eula knew she would be cold. Unlike Jean and Eula, who always tried to use uniforms to protect their bodies during fights, Amber always preferred mobility. And that usually meant thinner fabrics.

Amber was pleasantly surprised with Eula’s gesture. Even though the woman in front of her had a family name weighing on her back, the outrider hoped that the people in Mondstadt would see this side of her someday. How gentle and caring she was. Amber had felt guilty for falling in love with Eula, but now she wondered, how could she not?

As Amber drifted away immersed in thoughts once more, Eula felt uneasy again. She knew her friend was probably dealing with personal matters in which she shouldn’t get involved, but she had never seen the girl act like this. Something was certainly consuming her.

“Something is up with you” the captain finally asked, worry taking over her. She watched quietly as the outrider tried to fake a smile, her voice cracking in the middle of her denial phrase and tears starting to slowly stream down her cheeks.

Eula listened carefully as Amber vented about her breakup with Razor and told her what had happened at Jean’s house the night before. She told her everything she had gone through and, more importantly, why.  Of course. Amber would fall in love with every citizen in Mondstadt before seeing Eula as anything more than a friend. When hard days crashed on her, she also thought she preferred anyone else to herself.

“And it’s so hard” Amber sniffled, rubbing her eyes in a failed attempt to stop crying “having to stay around that person and pretend you are not holding any feelings for her”

“I know”

That short sentence was enough to interrupt Amber’s lament. Something in Eula's voice hid a message the outrider couldn’t figure out. It felt like those words were holding something and threatening to break down at the same time. Eula’s voice along with the look on her eyes made Amber wonder if there was a reason why she always seemed a bit off when Amber mentioned someone she was interested in. Why she always seemed a little less interested in talking about matters that included Razor than any other subject when Amber started going out with him. Why she seemed slightly embarrassed when they went to the tavern and Amber admitted that maybe she wasn’t interested exclusively in men. And maybe there was a reason why Eula hadn’t shown romantic interest in anyone since they met.

All those sudden memories seemed enough for her to give it a try. She cupped Eula’s cheek and moved the captain’s head gently so she could face her. Now looking straight at each other’s eyes, Amber gave her friend a shaky smile before quickly pressing their lips together. She didn’t have time to regret or wonder if she had fucked everything up, because Eula immediately kissed her back, using a strong arm on Amber’s back to pull the girl to her lap and deepen it.

The abrupt mix of pleasing sensations took over Amber. On her mouth, Eula’s tongue pressing against her own, soft lips pressing against hers. On her face and hips, Eula’s hands, holding her body firmly, fingers calloused due to her claymore handling. And finally, between her legs, muscular thighs, not only because of the training, but also because of dancing, a pastime they did together whenever possible.

Only the archons knew how many times they danced together, Amber tripping on her feet while Eula gracefully held her close, trying to guide her. In secret, Amber wondered when they would do it again, this time in a more intimate way.
