Chapter Text
It was late, it was dark, and it was very cold outside. When Fundy left the safety of his country’s walls roughly half an hour earlier, he didn’t have a plan nor a destination, just a single objective - go anywhere else. Now, he was somehow in the middle of the Greater SMP, staring at the door to Dream’s home. If he was any less tired, he’d probably at least try to fake surprise at the realization, but he didn’t feel like acting that night. He raised his hand, aimed it at the wood, prepared himself to knock… but stayed still. His boyfriend told him he could always visit, sure, but Fundy had a feeling that this wasn’t what he had in mind. He was certain there were still many things Dream would put above him, and that list most likely included whatever he was doing now.
He couldn’t bring himself to knock, but couldn’t force himself to leave either. Dream was probably soundly asleep, he shouldn’t wake him up like that, but the road back to L’Manburg seemed impossible at that point… not to mention, his legs must’ve brought him here for a reason. Either that, or he just always subconsciously tried to get there. After considering everything for a couple of minutes, or for what felt like hours, he wasn’t sure, he settled on a plan - he’d knock, lightly, just once, so that if Dream was up he could react. After that, he’d just leave and look for some other person to burden with his problems.
He knocked, and waited. He thought he heard something move on the inside of the house, and that he even caught the noise of footsteps, but could easily write that off as his tired mind playing cruel tricks on him. He’d have much more trouble coming up with an excuse for the door opening in front of him after just a moment of waiting, and for Dream standing on the other side of it. The man seemed half-asleep at first, but apparently seeing the fox hybrid looking exhausted, cold, and overall horrible was concerning enough to snap him out of it.
“Fundy? Are you okay?” he asked immediately. It still took the fox hybrid a moment to comprehend the situation, but he nodded.
“...Yeah, I just… Couldn’t sleep? Decided to visit? Had a… I don’t know,” he cut himself off, he was far too tired for excuses and for sharing his entire life story that led him up to this point. Dream stared at him for a moment longer before stepping off to the side and ushering him inside.
“Alright, come in, you look like you need a break,” he said, putting a hand over Fundy’s shoulder to lead him deeper into the house as soon as he crossed the door. “Did you walk here all the way from L’Manburg?” he asked, lightly kicking the door to close it behind them.
“...Yeah, I think so,” the fox hybrid confirmed. Dream seemed confused by the answer, but stopped himself from inquiring further. Luckily for him, Fundy continued. “You know, I wasn’t really paying attention to where I was going and now I’m here. Must be destiny,” he added with something that would probably resemble a grin if he wasn’t so exhausted.
“Mhm, destiny,” Dream hummed quietly, and the next thing Fundy knew, there was a blanket draped over his shoulders. A very nice, fuzzy, and warm blanket that felt like a blessing after spending so much time in the cold outside. “Is this better?”
“It’s warm,” the fox hybrid muttered with a short nod. Dream smiled at him before leading him further into the house.
“That’s good, because you’re freezing. Do you want me to get you some food? I think I might even have some berries,” he offered, but Fundy shook his head in refusal. There were many things he was feeling, but hunger wasn’t one of them. “Alright, sit down then,” Dream instructed.
“But I’m not…” Fundy tried to answer, but his boyfriend already sat him down. He quickly realized that it wasn’t a chair he was taken to, but a bed. Dream left him for just a moment before returning with an extra blanket.
“Do you want to sleep here tonight?” he asked, already wrapping the new blanket around the fox hybrid’s shoulders. Unceremoniously, he nodded. “Alright. Lay down, then. I just need to finish sorting that chest over there, I’ll join you in a minute.”
Fundy did as he was told to, and then tried to wait for his boyfriend’s return. Fighting sleep off wasn’t easy, and his eyelids seemed to grow heavy almost as soon as his head rested on the pillow, but he persisted. Within a couple of minutes, his eyes could’ve been as well glued together, because there was no way he’d be opening them any time soon… And then, there came the quiet footsteps, soon followed by a new weight by his side and an arm gently wrapping around him.
“Goodnight,” Dream said softly. The noise Fundy made in response wasn’t anywhere near being intelligible, but it was close enough to a ‘goodnight’ in his mind, and that had to be enough.
