Everything I Dreamed About (Starts to Seem So Empty Without You)

Chapter 2

Summary:

A proposal - and a little more.

Notes:

This is a year late and not nearly as much as I wanted but we can't always get what we want. Just some fluff, I hope you enjoy.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Lena is sipping her morning coffee as she stares out the window at the rising sun. She loves that Kara’s apartment is east facing, the sun warming her face and her soul. It’s so easy to get caught up in the stress of everything, forgetting to appreciate how beautiful her life is. But this morning she woke up grateful, a mess of blond hair tickling her face and a warm body pressed against hers. She felt rested and warm and that the world is good. It was hard to get out of bed, leave the safety of a day untold, but it was easy to hum at the taste of coffee and to smile at the flock of geese that flew by, honking much too loud for 7 am.

The sun is fully risen as Lena finishes the last of the coffee in her mug, the sound of Kara in the bathroom evidence that she’s finally awake. She stumbles out of the bedroom in Lena’s oversized sleep shirt and a pair of boxers, smile already bright. It hits Lena right in the chest, everything about her, makes it hard to breathe. Kara’s smile warming up her insides better than the coffee could. The sense of peace that she gets makes everything melt away. There is nothing in this world she needs to worry about when she gets to share her life with the woman in front of her. And, god, if Lena doesn’t know she wants to spend the rest of her life like this.

Like she knew she would, Kara comes and wraps her arms around Lena’s waist, attempting to give her a kiss on the check. Lena doesn’t let her, turning her head to meet Kara’s lips with her own. The hand not holding her coffee cup sliding up Kara’s cheek and into her knotted hair. She kisses her deep and slow and long – chasing Kara’s lips when she tries to pull away, letting her body touch Kara wherever she can.

When she finally lets her go, she sets her coffee cup on the counter to rest her hands on Kara’s broad shoulders. The scrunch in her eyebrows give away Kara’s confusion, but she is still looking at Lena with adoration.

“What was that for?”

Lena knows this is it. The ring, a proposal has been on her mind for weeks – months. Eliza has texted her encouragement more than once. She hasn’t quite figured out how she’s going to do it, but she knows there’s nothing that could stop the words about to spill out of her mouth.

“You make me so happy. The way you love me, Kara, is more than I could have ever hoped for. It’s like I can see us – in the future. Old and gray sitting on a loveseat, surrounded by our family, looking back on today, this moment as a checkpoint on this road-to-forever we’re on. I can see you carrying our child, somehow, looking more beautiful than ever.” Lena moves a hand up to stroke Kara’s cheek, blush rising on it ever so slightly, her dimple showing as she smiles.

“I can see you teaching them to be kind and open the same way you are. What I can’t see, is how I could love you more than I do right now.” Lena pauses, looking around, and presses her hand against Kara’s chest. “Don’t move.” She goes over to her bag, pulling out a small, sinched jewelry bag. She opens it as she walks over to Kara. It isn’t clear if Kara knows what’s happening, but she leans her forehead against Lena’s. She gently pulls the ring out of the bag, pulling her head back so she can see Kara’s face. “What do you think?”

Kara doesn’t answer immediately, tears pooling in the bottom of her eyes, smile watery. She just runs her thumb along Lena’s cheek.

“You know, when I first met you, in your office with Clark, I was so drawn to you. I couldn’t quite figure out why. When you looked at me from that helicopter, I knew I was going to fall in love with you. I thought I was already in love with you, when you told me you knew I was Supergirl. How silly of me, now that I know what it really feels like to be in love with you – to be loved by you. There is nothing more I want than to be your wife.”

Lena lets out a breath she didn’t know she was holding, then a small laugh, tears streaming down her face. She kisses Kara again, ring still in her own hand. Kara meets her intensity, pushing her up against the counter, pinning her there.

She pulls her head back, “Wait, wait. Kara -” Lena’s hand goes to her chest to make Kara pause. Her earnest eyes almost make Lena forget what she wanted to do. “The ring, do you want to put it on?”

Kara laughs and nods, giving her a peck on her cheek as she offers her hand. Lena slips in on, rubs her thumb across Kara’s knuckles. They both take a moment to just look, to take it in.

“Lena, it’s beautiful. Thank you.”

Lena just presses up on her toes to kiss her again.

Lena shuts the front door to their apartment as quietly as she can. She slips her shoes off, tosses her bag to the floor. The living room and master bedroom are empty, so she enters the nursery through the half open door. There, snoring quietly in the rocking chair in the corner, Kara sleeps with their daughter tucked into her arms. Lena pads over to them, giving them each a kiss on the forehead. Kara takes her time opening her eyes, blinking blearily up at Lena. She leans in to press her smile against Kara’s.

When she pulls away, Kara looks down at the sleeping child in her arms, running a gentle hand over her hair.

“Welcome home, baby. Did you get everything done that you needed to?” Kara whispers into the darkness.

“Yeah, I did.” Lena looks onto the scene in front of her, the lights from the city outside lighting up soft curls and a tiny nose; slanted light catching on Kara’s eyes, the curve of her collarbone. She kneels down next to Kara, stroking the tiny arm hanging loosely, placing a soft kiss to the equally tiny fist.

Kara’s voice breaks the silence again, “She was looking for you before she fell asleep.”

Lena rolls her eyes, not bothering to look up. “Honey, I’m fairly certain she doesn’t have object permanence yet.”

Lena can hear the mirth in Kara’s voice when she responds, “She’s your kid, I know she’s ahead of the curve already. Plus, I just know she missed you. I did too.”

“I’m done for at least the next couple of days. I’m all yours. Both of yours.”

Kara leans down, slightly hindered by the child between them, to give Lena a lingering kiss.

“You know,” Lena starts, looking into Kara’s eyes, “I’m not sure how I could ever love you more than I do right now.”

Kara’s joy bursts out in a quiet laugh, as she completes her wife’s thought, “but you’ve said that before.”
