Chapter Text
Christmas Day is here.
Much to Dazai’s delight, Chuuya has agreed to take a day off work and head on a proper date with him. Dazai has already planned to take Chuuya somewhere special to celebrate Christmas, but of course, that’s a surprise for the redhead later on.
For now, the brunette is parking his car at the apartment complex’s parking lot, and taking the elevator up to Chuuya’s floor to pick him up.
Chuuya, on the other hand, is fidgeting nervously in his apartment, pacing around his living room. It’s not at all surprising for him to be nervous, since the last guy he dated was…
Was…
Well, seeing as though even he can’t remember, it’s been a pretty long time. Unless you count that picnic date with Dazai. Or the one that was interrupted at Lupin.
His outfit for today consists of a dark red turtleneck sweater, a pair of jeans, and a beige trench coat over it all. Dazai only told him they’d be outdoors most of the time, so he made sure to wear lots of layers to keep warm.
Plus, Chuuya absolutely loves surprises, so Dazai keeping their date location a secret is rather romantic in his opinion.
Speaking of Dazai, he should be here any minute now.
The doorbell rings just as Chuuya stuffs his phone into his pocket. He opens the door to reveal Dazai with a gift box in hand.
“Merry Christmas, Chibi!”
“Merry Christmas! Wait, let me get your present–”
Chuuya runs back to his bedroom to retrieve the gift, handing it over to Dazai as they exchange gifts. The box feels pretty heavy, and Chuuya turns back and places it down on the coffee table in front of the sofa for now.
While he does that, Dazai takes a small step into the apartment, peeking over at the table where Chuuya has put his present.
His eyes immediately lock onto the glass vase that’s sitting there– filled with red camellias.
“Ready to go?” Dazai asks, still smiling at the thought of the well-kept flowers in Chuuya’s apartment.
The redhead nods, locking his apartment door behind him as they walk back to the elevator and down to the parking lot.
Once they enter the car, Chuuya can’t help but think that Dazai’s car looks very familiar– even though he’s been in here twice.
A black car.
Wait.
“Oh my god.”
Dazai turns to look at Chuuya in confusion.
“You– you were the one outside the office when I caught a cold?”
The blush that’s crept onto Dazai’s face is a bright pink, even if the lighting in the parking lot is dark.
Chuuya gasps and slaps a hand across his mouth in disbelief. “I thought it was a stalker!”
“Is Chuuya calling me a stalker?”
“Well, it’s not exactly a lie, is it?” The redhead says, rolling his eyes.
A moment of silence passes before the brunette takes a deep breath.
“I felt bad for overworking you just because I was an emotionally constipated coward,” Dazai confesses, starting the car, “I’m really sorry I got you sick.”
And seeing Dazai all flustered like this is a sight worth more than some 10 million yen masterpiece.
“It’s okay. You nursed me back to health anyway, right?”
“That’s because a silly, stupid slug like you wouldn’t be able to take care of yourself~”
Chuuya huffs in frustration. “I take back everything I said! Pull over right now!”
“I’m supposed to be celebrating Christmas today with the prettiest redhead I’ve ever seen, so I’m afraid I can’t do that.”
This time, it’s Chuuya’s cheeks going bright pink.
----------
The drive took around 40 minutes, and since Chuuya didn’t really get much sleep last night because of the bride’s last minute change in dress, he fell asleep in the car.
Dazai, obviously, doesn’t mind. After all, what’s cuter than a sleeping Chibi using Dazai’s coat as an extra blanket?
Finding a spot to park in was a little difficult, since this place is pretty crowded on Christmas– but it’s a good thing that they arrived early.
Dazai reaches over his seat to unbuckle Chuuya’s seat belt and gently shake the redhead awake.
Chuuya yawns and rubs his eyes, stretching his arms before passing the coat back to Dazai.
The parking lot is unfamiliar to Chuuya, so he can’t guess where they are just yet. Dazai has made him close his eyes as they walk to the entrance– the brunette’s arm around Chuuya’s waist, acting as a guide.
Once they reach the entrance, Chuuya can hear the fanfare music blasting through the speakers, along with the chatter of families and the rushed footsteps around him.
He can hear lots of children squealing in delight, like this is the happiest place in the world for them to be in.
No way. Did Dazai really–
“Open your eyes, Chuuya!”
–bring him to Disneyland?
“Dazai– I– this–”
The redhead looks around, marveling at the beautiful castles and the streets that are decorated with various Christmas decorations.
“Do you not like it? We could go somewhere else–”
“No, no,” Chuuya turns back to look at Dazai, flashing the brightest smile Dazai has ever seen, “it’s perfect. Thank you.”
Perfect.
“I’m glad it is.”
“I’ve never been to Disneyland during Christmas time before,” Chuuya says, taking a few more steps into the theme park, mouth still wide open in awe at how pretty the place is, “it’s crowded during this time, so tickets are hard to get.”
Dazai reaches into his coat pocket, pulling out two 1-day pass tickets.
Chuuya’s excited laugh is like music to his ears.
But if he’s able to give Chuuya days like this, to see Chuuya smile, to hear Chuuya laugh.
He’s content.
That’s enough.
Chuuya’s happiness is enough.
As soon as they present their tickets and enter, Chuuya spots something.
“Wait, wait, wait, can we get those?” The redhead suggests, pointing to the gift shop, where a display of various, colourful Disney ears– a staple souvenir for anyone going to Disneyland.
Chuuya doesn’t even notice how his hand instinctively grabs Dazai’s, and he drags them both over to the shop to try on the headbands.
“Look at this one!” Chuuya exclaims, taking the pair off the display hook and standing on his toes to put it on for Dazai. The brunette looks at it through the mirror– it’s a black coloured one, with a black bow in the centre of it that looks like it’s been dusted with gold sequins.
“It’s pretty.”
“Me or the headband?”
“The headband.”
“How mean!”
Dazai picks out one too– it’s black and gold as well, with leopard print on the ears and a black bow in the centre as well. He places it on top of Chuuya’s hair, spinning the redhead around for him to look in the mirror.
“Cute.”
Chuuya giggles. “Me or the headband?”
“You.”
“You’re such a sap,” Chuuya teases, but the big smile on his face and the blush on his cheeks seem to say otherwise. They pay for the ears and walk towards the rides– the first one being Space Mountain, because Chuuya says they should do all the popular, scary rides first before the line gets too long.
It isn’t until they’re next in line to get onto the ride that Dazai starts rethinking his life decisions.
Is he afraid?
Yes.
He looks over at Chuuya, who looks way too enthusiastic for this ride. He’s pretty much jumping up and down in excitement at this point.
So he takes a deep breath and gets on.
And they’re plunged into darkness.
----------
Chuuya sighs as Dazai pukes again into the toilet.
Ah, this truly is the worst. It’s basically their first date, and Chuuya already has to witness Dazai puke– which is embarrassing, to say the least.
The brunette is still shocked that Chuuya was willing to come into the stall with him.
He’s even more shocked that Chuuya is patting his back gently as he throws up.
“You should’ve told me you were scared!”
“But you wanted to go so badly!” Dazai explains, feeling less dizzy and a little better now. Chuuya passes him a tissue and he wipes his mouth with it, tossing it in and flushing once he’s done.
“I wouldn’t have gone if you were scared, you know?”
They exit the bathroom. “Today is your day, Chuuya. You deserve to have fun. You’ve been working so hard this month, and I want you to enjoy this trip.”
“If it’s my day, you have to listen to this very carefully, okay?” Chuuya says, “I want to spend it with you. That’s all. I don’t care about the rides or the ears or anything, really. I’d be happy celebrating Christmas anywhere with you.”
“You–”
“So, shitty, coward Dazai, we’ll go on the less intense rides. But first, I want to eat something.”
“After seeing me puke? Really?”
“Seeing you vomit doesn’t make me any less hungry, idiot. Besides, you have to eat something after you just threw up.”
And so Chuuya buys two churros from the nearby stand, passing one to Dazai as he takes a bite out of his. It’s still warm, so it’s great for a snack on this cold day.
“Chuuya?”
“Mhm?”
“Thank you.”
Their hands find each other’s, and it’s just like second nature to them as their fingers lace together.
----------
Chuuya did keep his promise– they didn’t go on any intense rides, and instead, went to visit lots of characters instead. Who says full-grown adults can't talk to Mickey Mouse?
During the afternoon, they got to watch a Christmas parade, and at night, the Christmas lights that were hung around the park looked even more beautiful. It was mesmerising enough to just take a stroll through the park– some families have already left, so the theme park turned less crowded.
They took lots of pictures throughout the day too: selfies of their matching Disney ears, secret candid photos neither of them would ever admit to having taken themselves, and of course, pictures of the gorgeous theme park (because Disneyland’s architecture is absolutely stunning?)
Speaking of the architecture, Chuuya would love to plan a wedding here. Just imagine how amazing it’d be? It could be a Disney princess themed one, and the ceremony could be at Cinderella’s castle…
Oh, the fireworks are going to start soon!
They’ve been here since morning, and Disneyland is truly a place you’ll never get bored of.
(Or maybe, it’s just because he’s with Dazai).
The sparks of colour light up the dark night sky– hues of red, orange, green flashing again and again.
It’s absolutely breathtaking.
The fireworks show reaches its climax, bigger explosions causing the crowd to awe in amazement.
“Can I kiss you?”
Even as the pop of the fireworks are almost deafening, the question rings in Chuuya’s mind loud and clear.
And perhaps the lips that come crashing onto Dazai’s are the perfect answer to the question.
