Chapter Text

All she can see are lights.

They’ve wandered into the park after a date and the trees are full of fairy lights. Keeley is giddy and starry eyed, like a child on Christmas morning, and Roy thinks it’s one of the most adorable things he’s ever seen.

“I love fairy lights in trees.” She says, twirling underneath the trees while the lights float golden on her skin and her hair curls into glitter. She feels like a fairy, like a butterfly, can’t help but spread her arms wide and close her eyes, letting the gold wash over her and down to her soul. Roy can’t hide the smile that’s playing on his lips, and the laugh that’s bubbling in his throat. He reaches out his hand for her, and she grabs on straight away, their hands fitting together like a familiar melody, sung so often that they know every line and every note.

He twirls her and pulls her into him, tucking a curl behind her ear and kissing her nose.

“Is that so?” he breathes. She melts into him, blue eyes reflecting the diamonds in the trees.

“Yeah. There’s something so magical and pretty and twinkly about them.”

Roy smirks “Twinkly? Really? There are so many better words than twinkly”

Keely laughs and playfully smacks him on the arm. “Shut up. Yes twinkly. Haven’t you ever laid down under a Christmas tree or a tree with fairy lights? It’s like being in a fairy cave. It’s one of my favourite things. Besides you of course” At this she kisses him, long and slow and tinged with light.

And Roy thinks he’d put fairy lights everywhere for her whenever she wanted. This human sunbeam who lights up his life like a thousand fairy lights, who makes him forget his own name whenever she smiles.

All of a sudden she lies down under the trees, tugging Roy down with her.

“The fuck are we doing down here?” He’s not sure what is happening, but at least his knee doesn’t hurt when he is lying down. She puts a hand to his lips, points to the sky. And Roy has to admit, it’s pretty fucking magical. The lights are dancing through the leaves and Keeley is pressed against him, her eyelashes eskimo kissing his shoulder and her breath warm against his skin, giving him goosebumps and making his head sing with images of the two of them together.

“Wow” It escapes his lips before he knows it, and when Keeley looks up and smiles at him he’s almost blinded by her brightness. Fairy lights have nothing on Keeley, he thinks.

She curls around him, her head on his chest so she can hear his heartbeat. Roy’s fingers lazily curl her hair as they lie under the trees together, and he can feel Keeley practically humming with light.

"Just lie with me” she purrs into his skin, and suddenly Roy is flushed and hot and silently cursing the fact they are out in the open (that hasn’t stopped them before, he thinks, but then remembers the lights above him and thinks that illuminated public sex might be pushing the boundaries just a little).

So they lie under the trees, stars in their eyes and diamonds in the sky. And she’s his and he’s hers and they’re doing life and they are doing it together. And Roy thinks fairy lights in trees could now be one of his favourite things.

Besides Keeley, of course.

                                                                                                                    ***

All she sees are lights.

There are fairy lights curled around the railings as far as she can see, candles twirling from where Keeley is standing to the goal net. There are so many fairy lights dancing and twisting around the net and the posts that Keeley thinks this must be what the fairy caves look like in Phoebe’s bedtime stories. There’s a picnic blanket and white orchids and standing in the middle, wearing a navy suit that perfectly matches the colour of her skirt and surrounded by so much light Keeley swears he is glittering…is Roy.

And she can’t help it, can’t stand one more minute of being apart from him.

She runs to him. Straight into his arms, almost knocking him over and making her flower crown almost fall off her head. Her hands are on his face and she’s kissing his eyelashes, his cheeks, his neck. She kisses him full on the mouth, tasting the sun and stars and everything in between. She can feel his hands in her hair and on her skin and oh she loves this man right down to her bones.

They break apart and she is breathless and giddy and he’s looking at her with a smile that’s reserved only for her, and goodness she can’t remember her name.

“Hi gorgeous” he says softly, his eyes a rich cocoa. “Holy shit, you look fucking incredible.” She smiles at him, a deep rose colouring her cheeks.

“Well, I had some help in that department didn’t I? This outfit is fucking amazing Roy. I feel like a princess”

“You’re welcome babe. I had some help from Phoebe though.” He gestures to the flower crown, now adorably crooked in Keeley’s curls. Keeley giggles and kisses Roy’s forehead.

“Well I think you both did great, I love it.”

Suddenly Roy kneels down on the rug, pressing a kiss to her middle and she couldn’t love him more if she tried.

“Keeley…” he begins. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a box and suddenly his hands are shaking and he can’t believe he’s finally doing this and can’t imagine doing this with anyone else but her. He holds out the box, a heart shaped Post it taped to the top.

Open me

And she does and there’s a ring and it’s so her and it’s beautiful and she can’t believe this is happening and she only ever wanted this with him. She looks into those chocolate eyes of his, sees tears in his eyelashes that sparkle under the light. He smiles, big and wide and almost splitting his face in two.

“You’re fucking incredible. Not only do I think you’re amazing, but Phoebe thinks the sun shines out of your actual eyeballs. I want to watch you be a fucking fantastic mum and I want to spend the rest of our lives cooking for you and making you the happiest fucking person on the planet. Marry me?” Roy lets out the breath he’s been holding and looks at Keeley, whose hands are covering her mouth and whose eyes are adorably wide and glittering and wow isn’t he the luckiest.

Keeley can’t find the words; he’s surrounded by lights and he wants to marry her and oh she’s so excited she’s practically vibrating.

“So is that a yes?”

At that she squeals. “Yes yes fucking yes a million times yes!”

They collide and tumble to the ground, tangled in lights and forever and rings and smiles. And their hearts are humming the same tune and her diamond is throwing fireworks onto their skin and they’ve promised forever to each other. They find each other’s hands and they knot them together on top of their unborn baby as Keeley whispers in his ear.

“Lie with me.”
