Chapter Text
It’s been quite a while since we made the trek up to the capital. The peace treaty was successfully passed, and even though some humans still lead attacks on demons' life was almost completely threat free. I could finally sleep at night without the fear of a troop of soldiers demolishing everything I know.
I’ve finished my apprenticeship under Eden, and now we work as partners, me taking half of the patients in town giving her more time for appointments and proper treatment. This job definitely pays well.
Owen came back with us to live in the village. He stayed with Eden for a long time. He went to learn carpentry from Mrs. Tara, becoming one of her apprentices.
Owen and I eventually made enough money to build our own house out in the woods a bit. It wasn’t anything big, 2 bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen/living room. Each room decorated to the owner's taste, one key difference though. Owen's room had to have a skylight, according to him, of course. He set up a small target in the space behind our house. I tried planting flowers, but they always seemed to get eaten by deer or something.
Town is more bustling than ever. It’s exciting…… for me at least. While he hasn’t had any more public breakdowns there are days Owen shuts himself up in his room. He says it’s to keep us safe, but I feel like there must be some other reason. I still don’t dare enter his room when he’s like that though. Those days have always been very quiet, too quiet.
Life has become easy. I like to think I deserve it, being able to live happily that is. Truthfully, I’m not sure any of us do, well maybe Eden and Will, but that’s it.
We’ve all noticed one new thing. “The Maze”, as they call it. The new tactics the governments schemed up to scare us all into submission. From what I’ve read it’s a very cruel system, I bet what the public has is only the tip of the iceberg too.
It’s a good thing I’ll never have to worry about doing something bad enough to be sent there.
