A New Year's to Remember

Chapter 4: Epilogue

Chapter Text

Maya wasn’t immediately sure what time it was when they woke up, but it was far too early for her taste. It was also by a rather unpleasant method; Fran got a phone call. Fortunately, the irritating ringtone was soon replaced by two much nicer sounds; that of a bird chirping, and Franziska’s voice.

“What?” The prosecutor spat into her phone. “What time is it?… 8:00 already?” She looked over at her watch which sat on a bedside table. “Well then I’m not coming in; I’m taking the day off. I know, I know; I usually work all 7 days of the week, but this week is going to be the exception. Tell them I’m taking today off, and perhaps tomorrow too.” A pause, and a tinny voice rang through the phone. “It’s none of your business where I am nor what I am doing, Miles Edgeworth!” She shouted into the phone before falling back down into her pillow. A sigh. “Just give INTERPOL a quick phone call, or get Gumshoe to do it if you don’t feel up to it. I don’t care what you have to do, I’m not going to do it; I’m going back to bed.” More silence. “Because I’m wiTH MY BELOVED NOW LEAVE ME ALONE!!”

She hung up, then threw the phone across the room with the might of Zeus. It must have been a Nokia, because it hardly seemed to even dent when it slammed into the opposite wall and fell to the floor.

“Y’know, you basically just told him where you are and what you’re doing, Fran.”

Franziska was silent for a few seconds as her sluggish mind processed the words; Maya could practically hear the sound of a dial-up connection being made in her brain. “Whatever,” was the response it generated as she rolled over. “I’m too tired to care.”

“I feel you,” Maya concurred, cuddling up against her partner.

     “Literally.”

Indeed, Maya had one hand wrapped around Franziska’s torso. Then, on a whim, she lightly grazed Fran’s belly. This induced a contraction of her abdominal muscles and a small little fit of giggles.

“Oh? Is the lady ticklish?” Asked Maya rhetorically. “Well, fortunately for you, I’m too tired for a tickle fight, so count yourself lucky.”

     “Thank goodness.”

     The bird started chirping again.

     Maya had an idea.

“Hey Fran,” she whispered. “How about you call that bird?”

“Huh?” Asked Franziska in reply, sitting up a little to look over at her. “I’ve never heard that bird before, and besides; the window is closed."

Maya quickly disposed of the latter problem; the window was quickly opened and the screen removed. “There you go,” she said upon completion, laying back down to resume the cuddling she was already missing.

     Silence.

With startling accuracy, Franziska mimicked the call of the bird outside with a precise and well-controlled whistle. The bird quickly picked up on it, and the two communicated back and forth for a time.

Then, with a quick humming of wings, the bird flew in.

“Well hello, little one,” Franziska cooed to the little thing now nestled against her hand. “You’re a little bigger than the one from all those years ago.”

“Everything’s bigger in America,” Maya pointed out.

     “Indeed.”

     “Fran?”

     “Yes, my love?”

Maya had to take a moment to soak that in before asking her question.

“So if you have to tell your coworkers that you can’t make it to one of their social events because of a significant other with weird work hours, it won’t be a lie?”

     A brief moment of silence.

“No.” Her free hand caressed the fingers of Maya’s that were around her waist. “It will not be a lie at all. At least, most of the time.”

The spirit medium giggled a little at that; the joke landed well. Just like that little bird. Thus, with no more disturbances and every reason to feel comfortable, peaceful, and happy, Maya fell asleep cuddled up against her very real girlfriend.

Franziska, for the exact same reasons, promptly followed suit.

Alas, this is likely going to be my last Franmaya story, at least for the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, I hope you enjoyed this story! Thank you all for your patronage, and I hope to see you next time!
