Chapter Text
I had planned to leave on my own adventure as soon as I fixed my Tardis, three months later and I was still hanging around with the Doctor. I’d like to be able to say he was the reason I kept delaying my departure, but honestly I just kept getting distracted. And it was really nice to just hang out with people I could call friends without any stress. The whole thing was like a vacation.
I’d been sitting on the stairs in the console room watching Amy and Rory play darts…or I was before I got distracted and started disassembling one of the doctor’s old “sonic screwdrivers.” Apparently he patented it so it really is his technology, looking at the blue power crystal on the tip of the screwdriver I concede that it’s really interesting what one can do when they’re bored and decide sonic probes and sonic lockpicks just don't cut it.
Quickly reassembling the screwdriver I look up and loudly declare over the music “I’ve decided, i'm going to do it! my Tardis is fully repaired, i'm going to go on an adventure of my own!” Standing up I hold my fist clenched in front of me and use my other arm to flare out my cape dramatically to accentuate my point.
“I know you’ve been talking about it for the past month but are you sure, isn’t it going to be dangerous for you to go out on your own?” Rory asked, looking over from where he was standing by the dart board, his eyebrows scrunching up in concern. Rory tended to mother hen me a lot, it made sense, him being a healer’s apprentice(or nurse?)and all. But it was still strange to be handled so delicately when I knew I was at least one hundred and ten years older than him.
“Rory’s right, it wouldn’t be safe for you to be on your own, and I'd miss you, it's been fun having you around Dreamer.” Amy said sincerely, reminding me that Rory wasn’t the only one that had been mothering me. Amy just had some weirdly lax standards for safety, she was cool like that. Though the worry was still slightly demeaning.
“Amy, Rory I am a 138 year old Time Lady that was the captain of her own Tardis before you were born!” I said waving my new sonic at them scoldingly, they still looked ready to argue their point, so I pulled out the big guns.
“DOCTOR! TELL THEM I’M A 138 YEAR OLD TIME LADY WHO CAN FLY A TARDIS BY THEMSELF!” I said, yelling at him to be heard over the music playing.
“WHAT?” The Doctor yelled back, Looking away from the Tardis Console’s monitor he’d been studying for the past ten minutes, turning off the music as he did.
Walking up the steps towards the Doctor I reiterate what I said “Tell them I’m old enough to fly my Tardis by myself, I've been an adult for 38 years!” I said exasperated at the baby treatment I'd been given whenever I brought up setting off on my own.
“Well you can’t blame them you do look a bit…” At my glare the Doctor quickly changed his statement “Youthful?” he ended lamely. I nodded my head, acknowledging his continued right to live another day without stink bombs in his room.
“But I was around 200 years old when I left Gallifrey on my own…I think” The Doctor pointed out with a thoughtful look on his face.
“Bah! Not all of us are old as dirt like you are, Doctor.” I said waving my hand as if to physically dismiss his statement.
“Hey I’m only 907!” The Doctor said, clutching at his heart like I'd shot him.
“Doctor, I hate to tell you this, but you're about 207 years above middle aged.” I said even more brutally. “And honestly I'm more worried about you, I've got about eleven more regenerations in me, you don’t even have one!” I told him with exasperation that I was using to cover an actual concern of mine.
The Doctor gasped again, clutching his heart even more dramatically while hunching over and I rolled my eyes and walked close to him. Grabbing his face and straightening him back into a standing position, stepping on his toes just to be cheeky as I walked past him.
“The Dreamer is right though Amy, Rory, they are legally allowed to be on their own. And anyway I trust them to stay safe.” The Doctor said, his words would have been more convincing if he wasn’t shooting me skeptical looks the whole time he was saying it.
“Gah all of you are terrible!” I said annoyed, throwing my hands up in the air and looking at the ceiling like I was praying for patience from a higher power.
“I am serious though Doctor, maybe you should spend your last regeneration on a safe planet? I know Amy and Rory have a house on Earth, you could live with them” I told him looking at him with concern. The Doctor on the other hand looked as if i’d threatened him with a sonic mine, he instantly ducked behind Amy, taking cover and holding her in front of him as if to ward off any more suggestions of settling down.
“NO NEVER! I’d die, it would be so boring!” The Doctor cried out, still holding Amy out in front of him like a shield “No offense Ponds” The Doctor quickly tacked on when all of them started looking at him like he was crazy.
“Alright break it up, no one is going to force you to live with us Doctor!” Amy said, taking charge with the grace of someone who did it all the time, used to being the most mature (read stubborn) person in the room.
“Thank god” Rory muttered afterwards, seemingly very relieved they wouldn’t need to house the Doctor for the rest of his life.
“It was just a suggestion” I said, crossing my arms and puffing out my cheeks. It was an attempt to look cross, but just ended up looking even more like a child, so I quickly stopped.
“And anyway even after I start going off on my own i’ll still visit you all the time, you’ll never be able to get rid of me!” I said confidently, pointing at myself with a thumb.
“That is reassuring, but how would you even find us again Dreamer?” Amy asked, knowing exactly how random their trips were, it didn’t seem like it’d be possible to track down the Tardis to hang out when you had to look for it throughout all of time and space.
“Bah that’s simple, my Tardis can track down this one easily!” I stated, my Tardis was a beast, it was the newest type 90 model and I had upgraded and modified it a ton by myself. Part of the reason I was so busy in the war was because my Tardis was one of the only type 90s that could still fly. Tracking down the only other Tardis in the universe would be a piece of cake for Pine.
“Your Tardis looks great by the way” The Doctor chimed in cheekily, shooting a look at my Tardis parked in the corner of his console room. For some reason after my Tardis rebuilt itself it changed from just a plain green box into a phone box. Exactly copying the Doctor’s Tardis exterior, except it was a little smaller and it was a blackened dark green.
Blushing like crazy I started spluttering about how I still had no idea why it did that and I definitely didn’t change it on purpose. Amy interrupted my mortified rambling when she pulled me into a side hug.
“Ah don’t be embarrassed I think it’s cute!” Amy said, squeezing me not unlike a giant teddy bear.
“I’m not embarrassed!” I said indignantly, trying in vain to wiggle out of Amy’s arms “I was just saying it’s weird that my Tardis did it, that’s all!” Amy snorted, giving me a look that said she didn’t believe me for a second but would let it go.
Finally shaking off Amy I stumble away to hide behind an indulgent Rory, unconsciously mimicking the Doctor’s previous hiding behind Amy.
“Anyway I was thinking about popping off today on my own to Halcyon 7 for my first trip, they have trees with purple leaves and the bark is made of gold!” I said with a smile still slowly inching towards my Tardis, making Rory walk backwards so I could still use him as a shield against any embarrassment.
The Doctor smiled sadly and nodded “that sounds good, make sure to send me a message if you need anything and stay safe won’t you?” The Doctor said sadly. He knew I wasn't leaving just for an adventure, I was also running away. This Tardis was comfortable but I wanted to find my place in this strange universe without Gallifrey on my own. His words were kind and I knew he understood. Immediately I let go of Rory and ran forward to give him a hug.
“I’m the smartest Time Lady alive, there’s no way I’d run into any trouble I couldn’t get out of Doctor. But I'll send you updates on what I'm doing, if only so you’ll be jealous” I said, squeezing him tightly and then letting go so that I could do the same for Amy and Rory. Unlike the Doctor, Amy and Rory were much more reluctant and I spent another 10 minutes just reassuring them. Finally done dispensing hugs I bolted into my ship, the crystal console already whirring as my Tardis’s engines got ready to fly, sensing my intent.
Setting the coordinates was just as easy as it always was, and I took one more look at the Doctor and his crew through the monitor before finally taking off. “ Golden tree’s here I come!” I think excitedly, listening to the whine of the brake’s i’d left on just to mess with the Doctor.
