Washington D.C.

If she were anyone else in the world, Victoria Hand would have complained about being asked to come into work a day early. However, her family had disowned her and she had broken up with her girlfriend just before Christmas. After fourteen days of nothing to do and no one to pass the time with, she was chomping at the bit to get back to work. So, when Linda Avery called her up asking for a favor, there was no way that Victoria could refuse.

She had only worked with Avery one other time, and that was on a case where a witness needed an entire life history cobbled together in less than a day. Luckily, Victoria had been up to the challenge and produced a birth certificate, IDs, school, medical, and work history in record time. Each document was completely fool-proof. Avery had been impressed, so much so that she had asked for Victoria's contact information just in case she found herself in another pinch.

Apparently, she had, as she called Victoria at six-thirty in the morning on the second day of the year to ask for a favor. It wasn't an easy favor, either. At least, that's how it seemed from the outside looking in. Avery had found herself left with an 0-8-4 situation and a case where a witness to the supernatural needed their entire identity wiped and given a fresh start. Those were never easy. Nonetheless, Victoria was ready and willing to put the work in. It's not like she had anything better to do.

When she arrived at her desk, she found fax already waiting for her. Avery had sent over the witness' details. Victoria was going to need them if she was going to make believable documents. Once she sat down and began to review them for herself, though, Victoria found herself taken aback.

It turned out that the witness was in fact the 0-8-4, and not only that, but they were a child. Well, not even a child – a baby, really. She was too young to even move, talk, or even defend herself. Victoria had to wonder how on Earth an infant could be an 0-8-4. She scanned the page for further details on the case but found nothing other than the child's birth details and vaccination history. The single-page was all she had, too. Nothing about any parents going into hiding with her. In fact, this case was marked as needing to meet certain parameters for the foster care service. That didn't paint a good picture of what might have happened to her.

It wasn't her job to speculate, though. After reviewing the information, Victoria set about creating a whole new identity for the young girl, a whole new name, and a whole new set of records. For the birth certificate, she listed the child as being abandoned at a safe haven at an undetermined time and approximated her age at about six months. She changed the names of the doctors on the vaccination records and had everything localized to the State of New York, where the girl would be entered into the system.

Finally, she had to give the child a name. Figuring that the child's life was in danger – because why else would an infant need to go into hiding alone – she decided to give the girl the most ridiculous name she could think of: Mary Sue Poots. After all, no one would think to look for someone under such an odd and unfortunate name. The girl might hate it later in life, but if it kept her safe, it was worth it.

Once she finished forging the documents, Victoria faxed them back to Avery. She didn't know what the circumstances were behind this case, but she hoped this girl would go on to have a good life, despite the rough start. She didn't dwell on it long, though. After sending the fax off, she began to wander around the office, hoping to stumble upon more work to do. It was better than having to go home to an empty apartment.

Notes:

Of course, the series is still continuing. The next episode is going to be titled "Panic Room" and is going to be published on 9/25/22. If you're wondering why the long wait, it's because I'm going to be posting another story for my other series - Infinity Redefined (which you should totally check out, especially if you're a Steve/Tony fan.) - in June. Also, I tend to get heat sickness/stroke very easily so I can already tell you I'm probably going to be too sick to post in July and August.

Anyway, thank you all so much for reading this story and continuing to support this series! It really means a lot!

Remember kids, don't fear the unknown. Try to learn from it.
