Summary
If all he had were these moments, slow and steady touches and looks in crowded rooms where nothing could be mistaken as anything else, he thinks he could live off them. He might be emaciated at the end of the day, starving for what’s not being said—but as long as Syd throws him a bone, he’ll return to her.
or, Sydney and Carmy attend four weddings.

Summary
Sydney thinks that if she found out she was pregnant a little earlier she probably wouldn’t have gone through with it. Like, if she found out before her landlord changed the locks on her apartment, or before the bank sent her all those red letters, or before the pasta dried up, she’d probably have just taken herself to Planned Parenthood, popped the pills and charged it to the game. But as it is, the two blue lines appear on the stick during the worst months of her life, the first months of the pandemic when she’s unemployed and shit scared that her dad is going to get coronavirus and die. And when she sees them, she just thinks: well, this might as well happen. She was a disappointment before. What’s one more thing?
Before she meets Carmy, Sydney has a baby.

Summary
Her first thought is, grow up. After the blow-up, she thought every white boy with shaggy black hair was him; she was paranoid, she saw his face in cracks on the sidewalk, when she looked at trees the wrong way. She went back to New York for her summer of eating, and even though he was upstate and it was five years later, she just thought, he’s going to know I’m here, he’s going to feel it, God’s going to come to him in a dream and send him to me so he can call me a selfish bitch.

Summary
Carm blows smoke up at the sky and meets her gaze. “No, I couldn’t. You…we’re partners now. We need to be in this together.”
Syd doesn’t seem satisfied with this.
He pauses. Thinks. Starts again. “I’m at my best when I’m in the kitchen with you. Everything turns out better when I make it for you. And I mean everything, not just food. Choices too.”

Summary
"The Tuesday after she gave him the shirt back and he ruined her life with a scarf, things are suspiciously fine. Good, even. Service is smooth, dishes go out on time, there’s barely a raised voice in the kitchen. At one point Carmy puts his hand on her back to get past her and she doesn’t even react. Her self-control needs to be studied in history books. "
(Or as Virginia Woolf said, "Yes yes yes I do like you. I am afraid to write the stronger word.")
