Vesper woke up and immediately knew that it was going to be a bad day.
The light of dawn was dim in their room, but it was still enough to burn their eyes as they forced them open. Embers danced across their bones, a fire that was yet to fully bloom for all that it was momentarily tolerable. And their head ached, a hollow pain that consumed every complex thought or positive emotion.
Their magic was very active today. It roiled under their skin, lit up their nerves and blazed across their mind. How easy it would be to let it take over, to let it cascade from their fingertips, to start peeking behind the curtains of reality and reshape what should not be.
But they couldn’t. It would be too dangerous. They had to remain in control.
They breathed in. They breathed out. Five extra seconds in bed before they rolled over. They couldn’t afford to rest until the pain went away. They were a prince; they had so much work to do.
