Not to say that Charles can’t see the grief that still weighs heavy in Arthur’s blue blue eyes. They don’t talk about it because Arthur seems to prefer not to, but the language of mourning is one they both speak fluently. One wouldn’t even need to be fluent to know what was going on in Arthur’s head at any given time. To Charles it’s obvious– from those cheesy, soft smiles to a shaggier-than-usual, neglected seven o’clock shadow and a grim frown to match. The man carries the burdens of the gang like a pack mule and takes every loss like a chip to his shoulder.
He’s glad, now, that Arthur has gotten to patch one of the chips. Jack is back home, at least. He’s safe and happy and Abigail will stop going around threatening the camp with a steak knife. John even smiled earlier. That’s probably why there’s at least a new light in Arthur’s expression, glittering in gentle contrast to the firelight dancing in front of them.
