But then they reached week three when Genma finally came stumbling through the village gates battered and bruised, carrying an unconscious Raidou.
Kakashi wasn’t with them.

Kakashi lost his father when he was six. He almost allowed the grief to consume him. Let the guilt choke him. He didn't, thanks to his other precious people like Minato, Kushina, and Jiraiya.
He tried to bridge the gap between him and his team.

He just wanted his precious people to stop leaving.
So, Kakashi trained, saw a therapist, and he let people in no matter how much it ended up hurting.

Kakashi frowned at Tenzō. Wide, almond-shaped eyes stared back at him unassumingly. He raised his visible eyebrow in question. Tenzō said nothing but Kakashi could see a blush appearing above the black mask he wore under his happuri but over the bottom half of his face. A mask which was, as far as Kakashi could tell, identical to his own.
“What are you doing?” Kakashi asked when it became clear that his kohai wasn’t going to volunteer any information on his own.
“Reporting for duty,” Tenzō responded, not giving in even as his blush deepened.
Kakashi might have only been seventeen, but in his short life he’d encountered a lot of different reactions to his choice to wear the mask, considering he’d been wearing it for the majority of his life at this point. Some, mostly adults, found the behavior concerning. Others seemed to have decided that it was mysterious and cool. This interpretation had been more and more common with the girls his age as Kakashi got older. Still others had decided he did it for attention and mocked him any chance they got.
No one had ever tried to imitate him.
