Stories can't simply be an alternate interpretation. They must contradict either the established premise or Word of God about how things work in that canon.

In other words, making main characters gay in a canon with no established gay characters doesn't count, even if they're strongly portrayed as straight - the canon or author must have made it clear that gay people do not exist at all in their fiction for the presence of gay characters to qualify for this. A story treating an author's pet utopia/distopia as a distopia/utopia would qualify, as would one disagreeing with the idea the hero was good or villain evil. Significantly rewriting series events could also qualify, provided it was not simply about showing an alternate version of events but explicitly correcting something the writer disagreed with.

It's not required to hate the author to write foefic, but it helps.
