“You don’t have to do that, you know.”
He pauses, gaze flitting down to her mouth and back up again, tongue ducking out to wet his lips. A pinkish hue fans out over her cheeks at the sight. She swallows.
“Do what?” Mel asks, trying to keep her voice even — casual.
“Whatever I ask you to do.”

Summary
Frank just shakes his head again with a breathless chuckle, toweling off the glass in his hands. "Well... sometimes I look at you and think about what a great teacher you are. Because you are-" he adds with a purposeful glance at her before returning his attention to the dishes. "-and sometimes that gets me thinking about you being a teacher, which sometimes gets me to thinking about me being your student, which always makes me think about the crush I'd have on you as my professor."
"Frank!" Mel exclaims, mouth open in disbelief as a blush dusts his cheeks.
"It's true!" He defends, grin splitting his face. "What, with your glasses and smooth voice... you'd make a teacher's pet out of me quickly, Dr. King."

Summary
Loving Mel is strikingly different from loving Abby, as much as he hates himself for even making the comparison. She had been keeping herself and her sister afloat for years through college and medical school, all while maintaining a bright attitude that drew him to her in the first place. She was grounded enough in reality for him to know that she was not wholly innocent, but there was a brilliant allure to the way she interacted with the world despite knowing how cruel it could be. Her polite exterior was mistaken far too often for fragility, even though she may be the toughest person that he has ever met.
When he takes care of her, he knows that it is only because she has allowed him to, not because she expects him to. There is a difference between those notions.

“Before we … back when we were just texting, I had this fantasy …”
“Don’t you dare stop talking.”
