Dream, I want…” he began, faltering. His gaze flickered down for a moment before returning to Dream’s face. “I want us to… to consummate our marriage.”
Dream let out a slow breath, the words stirring a heat in him he had no business indulging.
“Nightmare,” he said quietly. “We’ve… talked about this.” His thumbs brushed lightly against the fabric at the boy's waist. He was barely bigger than when they were wed, still small beneath his hands and terribly young. “You don’t have to offer yourself to me because you think it’s your duty.”

Summary
His eyelights were glassy, unfocused pinpricks of light floating within cavernous sockets. Fever radiated from him in waves, his bones glinting with the faint sheen of rising heat. For most monsters, this would have been ordinary—expected, even. An inconvenience of biology that, while inconvenient, was hardly unusual.
But this was Cross.
And therein lay the anomaly that hung in the air, thick and accusatory, like a question that demanded an answer.
"How curious," Nightmare murmured, his voice slipping into the room like a serpent through grass, low and smooth, almost inviting. His gaze never wavered, sharp and calculating as it swept over the trembling figure before him. "And here I thought you didn’t suffer Heats."
