When Alice breaks up with Quentin over the phone from a magician's conference in Paris (a break up that Julia helpfully reminds him is not even the first for them this year), Quentin knows he has to seize the day and win her back. He won't get distracted, not by the fact that portal magic isn't working and he has to fly, or by the obnoxious and unfairly attractive Magician sitting next to him on the plane. He can take charge of his life, and this strange magician-hedge who seems to be building a life with his friends here is just another detour on the way to where he's supposed to be.
